Even 10 years ago, people who were informed were of the opinion that 3d printing has pros and cons... just like every other manufacturing process ever. You could 3d print everything if you wanted to but the quality will ALWAYS be inferior to another process more suited to the application, no matter how good 3d printers get. They've filled their role in prototyping quite well and that's the one thing they're really good for.

The hype was uninformed and unrealistic, pushed by people that either didn't know better or maybe even some that knew better but were selling a product. Consumer 3D printing is an idea that still doesn't have a good use case. All the hobbyist color printing I've seen is used for knick-knacks. It costs money, adds complexity and there's not a consumer use case, at least yet. Resin has much worse chemical safety issues and powder-based is a bad idea for consumer machines and a complicated problem to mitigate. Resin jetting combines the problems of inkjet with 3D.

Um what? No, we have full color printing now. We have for about 3 years now. And yeah, 3d printing 3d printers is absolutely a thing people do. What rock have you been living under?
