In 2006, Arsenal left their home of Highbury to move just around the corner to The Emirates. But what became of Highbury? The Athletic's Adam Leventhal is joined by Amy Lawrence in this short feature to explore the old ground, now residential flats and a beautiful garden, to discuss old times, and the reasons behind the move. Thanks to Arsenal Football Club and FirstPort Ltd for giving us permission to film inside the old ground, and Katherine Gumeniuk for showing us inside her flat.

I'm a west ham fan, but god I miss trips to the old highbury. I live near Peterborough now, but everytime I pass the Emirates on the train it brings a wee tear to the eye. Seeing the old highbury facade just on the horizon behind the big towering Emirates. I miss the boleyn ground, but it was never the same class of old school beauty as highbury, Highbury was an amazing work of art

I’m a Manchester United fan and I first went to Highbury when we played Arsenal in the league in the 87/88 season. I always felt that it was a proper old school football ground. Coming out of the station and walking around the tight streets surrounded by houses was what grounds were like and should be like still. It had a unique atmosphere, especially for night games.

Breaks my heart tbh looking at modern stadiums. Old school proper football grounds are surrounded by the community and locals. That’s just the way it should be. The character these stadiums had. Can’t get that with these billion dollar stadium.

I used to wonder why Arsenal didn’t redevelop Highbury instead of leaving...until I visited Highbury myself earlier this year. There just wasn’t any space to expand that stadium. I am glad however, that they transformed the old stadium into modern housing units as opposed to razing down the four stands. As iconic as Highbury was, Arsenal had to move into a bigger ground.

My old granddad used to take me to Drayton Park station in order to miss the crowds in the Arsenal station tunnels! That was back in the early 60's . Got my first introduction to the 'Northbank' soon after that! 4 Shillings for me to get in opposite the Underground ! Great days! I was caught up in the bottle riot on the Northbank when Arsenal played Glasgow Rangers in the 60's. Never forget that madness! Pulled my jacket over my head and got out of the way! Bottles flying everywhere! Such memories !

I remember people bitching about the executive boxes built on top of the clock end looking like ''posh flats''. Haha, who would have thought a few years into the future the whole of Highbury would be turned into posh flats? At least they've preserved the memory of the original structure instead of bulldozing it down and turning it into a shopping centre or a parking lot.

As a Coventry City fan, I watched this thinking what might have been. Highfield Road was redeveloped as housing too, but almost nothing from the stadium was retained, which I feel is such a shame.

Definitely a catch 22 having to move out of there. A unique traditional stadium...only stadiums that resemble it today are Craven Cottage and Goodison Park. Tight stadium with fans right on top of the pitch giving a brilliant atmosphere. On the other hand the move was a necessity for the time where money in the premier league ballooned and it was a case of get revenue in or get left behind. Biggest surprise is Arsenal for such a massive club had only 38,000 capacity for so long.

I grew up in Gillespie Rd, then lived in Avenell Rd for 33 years! The place was special, every other week was a carnival and a great vibrant atmosphere! It was working class then and we could be a part of the club! Pat Rice would serve us at his parents veg shop in Gillespie Rd and his brother Alfie was our barber! Then came the "Gentrification" and Yuppies, they have no soul but we do, I have many memories and mementos from the"Old Lady", including a horse shoe from the North Bank!❤

Personally I think the people attending games at the emirates are the problem. I’m not talking about genuine Arsenal fans, I’m talking about the tourists who go and watch a game and the people who go just to take a selfie. I understand that it’s part of the modern game but it kills the atmosphere. I always see people arriving 5-10 minutes after kick off and leaving 5 minutes before half time to get a beer. The stadium is often a quarter empty in the 85th minute because they’re more interested in getting an earlier train.

I can still smell the fresh ink hot of the press of the Arsenal official programs, from 1963, and the Police band with a proper singer singing Opera, before the game and marching on the pitch at half time, but giving the North bank a wide birth as they were very hostile ta say the least.

Wonder how much of that 107% was down to ticket prices increasing. Honestly to god if I paid the prices Arsenal fans are paying for that shite from their owners and management within the club, I’m not sure I’d bother paying it.
