Absolute History

4 жыл бұрын

On 9th September 2015, Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-serving British monarch. One of the most enduring images of her coronation in 1953 is that of Her Majesty surrounded by her dukes. Their influence once extended beyond the merely ceremonial, they were a crucial part of the architecture that supported the monarchy. Only 24 noble dukes now remain and this documentary - with unique access to the dukes of Norfolk, Argyll, Montrose and Marlborough - explores both the fascinating history and function of their great dukedoms in modern day Britain.

My wife’s grandfather is heir apparent to an Earldom (also a viscount?) when his older, childless brother dies. Both men are in their early 80’s. Next in line is my wife’s uncle, who has no sons. Next after that is my wife’s younger uncle who is currently living on the streets of Vancouver, Canada. There is a possible scenario where a Canadian homeless drug addict becomes an Earl/Viscount.

Honestly if a woman can inherit the throne, I think they should make special arrangements to have these titles inheritable by women as well... It would require ALOT of paperwork from the Queen herself to do it but it could be done. Actually, it could probably be done by Parliament but that would really be chipping away at HM's last remaining prerogatives...

Kealani Smith I’m sorry but Princess Beatrice is not going to inherit her fathers titles as they can only pass to males. In the case of Louis Mountbatten a special remainder was put on his title so that it could pass to his daughters if there were no sons Queen Victoria or Edward VII did this for the Duke of Fife (Edwards son in law) but the present monarch has not done it for any of her sons and grandsons who have been given titles

@@conserztasfia0078 When Mountbatten was given his titles he only had daughters and was unlikely to have any more children due to age and the circumstances of his marriage so an exception or special remainder was made to his title where it could pass to his daughters but after them the titles are restricted to male heirs only. Many pre union Scottish titles are open to female succession as are some ancient English Baronies but most peerage titles can only be inherited by men. When an hereditary peerage is or was created the rules of succession to that title are laid down in a document called a letter patent most are straightforward saying inheritance is by the male heirs of the first holder only but some can be quite complicated eg: the Earldom of Selkirk the rules of which are designed so that the title can never be held by the same person who is also the Duke of Hamilton

@@catsandcrafts171 The 10th Duke the day before he died in Feb '96 transferred all of the estate into a trust which is controlled to this day by the 10th Duke's direct family (mainly the his cousin I believe as briefly shown in the video). The 10th Duke's relevates I suspect aren't massively keen on their distant relative "being over at the estate" more than absolutely necessary for the various ceremonial functions he carries out. I might add the estate makes a lot of money from tourism nowadays and in fact the 'Atholl Highlanders' hadn't existed since the end of WW1 till 1966 when the 10th Duke recreated it, though not a regular thing to 1973. All the stuff you see on the screen here called the 'Atholl Gathering' they only done since 1984. To see them you have to pay for a ticket. As to the claim of being the "largest (or alternatively, last) private army in Europe, this pretty much is all from the Atholl estate publicity claims. In all their publicity they are at pains to use the phrase "no military role" as to avoid possible legal issues as the UK does have rather strict laws about mercenaries. Claiming that an army has "no military role" is rather like a baker saying they don't make cakes or bread. A bunch a guys with outdated 303s engaging in Scottish Highland military cosplay does not an army make.

And given how prestigious the title is (both as a Duke and as the head of clan Murray) it is nearly certain, that some relatives, or even random people doing their own research, made them aware. Out of my own experience; you'd be surprised how many people do research on this subject and then randomly call the people they find with the research (mainly to further the research). Charlemagne may have been my ancestor but it did not do much for us as a family. 400 years ago my ancestors were still in the class of landed gentry, then came a few vicars and schoolteachers followed by a few ancestors who worked as millers or shopkeepers and around the time of Napoleon they already had become poor, landless peasants. Because several Generations ago before my family migrated William Keith was a Duke but as the family's power slowly was chipped away they were forced into more mundane positions to acquire assets and eventually came to America resulting in me somewhere along the line. Always fascinating seeing where something start understanding how it progressed to what it is now and guessing out what could possibly come to be

@Artere Laksamana Frankly speaking, after watching the show, I'd think that this current system is indeed saving taxpayers' money already. Imagine the government having to maintain all these oversized museums and hotels. Just maintaining a little section of that roof already costs 100k POUNDS, imagine maintaining and even revamping the rest of it (eg the wiring, bringing 4G and 5G service to them)! Not to mention it's just common sense that the civil servants will never be as efficient at running them as private companies, so if these guys can barely keep up, how will having the government take back these lands save them money?

There's an underlying theme of loss of direction and possibly depression with these modern aristocrats. I suppose it's pretty easy to forget what you have and obsess over things you can't have because the upper aristocracy is locked like living fossils, or what you could have had if mistakes weren't made by ancestors. And for those that don't obsess over having more, the realization that when you have what others wish they could have, and you're still unhappy, the problem might be you. Then they also lack the motivation to be a productive member of society, and they're reminded that the duties and obligations they may have had centuries ago are stripped from them, it all seems farcical and pointless. The people who got into regular jobs or are managing the estate as a business enterprise seem much more motivated.

I was born in St Albans and virtually everyone in the city knows the story of the 1st Duke of St Albans and how Nell Gwyn hung him out of the window of Salisbury Hall threatening to drop her son to the yard below unless the King enobled him. Of course he did and it's true that St Albans was the nearest city that he could see. Salisbury Hall is also famous for being owned by the De Hallivand family and where the Mosquito fighter bomber was designed and now an aircraft museum. The citizens of St Albans are quite proud that there's not only Lord Verulam (the descendants of Sir Francis Bacon) but also a Duke and Duchess with the city's name too.

Like most things in life, there is often a simple explanation for all the talk and predications regarding modern royal dukedoms and it is this: It is the longevity of the current Sovereign's life that has caused all of this discussion. At no time in British history has a reigning monarch lived to such an advanced age, thus causing royal titles to languish with the queen's increasingly older descendants. Looking at the death record of all the monarchs who ruled England/UK during the past 1,000 years, the average age of death is 49 (N= 58, range = 12 - 95 years). So if the current sovereign's reign followed the historic average, the current Prince of Wales would have ascended the throne decades ago, therefore Prince William would already be the current POW and Prince Henry the Duke of York. So the current situation occurred when a princess with longevity in her genes became queen at the tender age of 25 and then produced 4 equally healthy children. It's quite possible that the royal family are the only folks not worrying about this topic! [The previous text concerns royal dukes - not noble dukes - which is an entirely different kettle of fish.]

The Duchess at 43:56 states that her younger son Hugo questioned when his older brother dies will he become Duke. The Duchess mistakenly stated that he would never become Duke but she is gave an inappropriate answer. According to the rule of primogeniture if Hugos elder brother dies without a son by a lawful wife then the ducal title passes to Hugo even if the elder brother has daughters and once Hugo died the ducal title would pass to his closest male relative. So it is possible that Hugo could become the next Duke after his brothers death or inherit it from their father should the elder brother predecease their father.
