This wisdom is applicable to ordinary people like us. It is not required to be a hero like Ding to embody that. Once there was a bird that has been left from its home, waiting for death. He was saved by humans and returns to nature. He didn’t expect to be alive again. He now flies with joy spreading that breath of lifeness around, without other purpose that is as an unbelievable strenght. That bird is a metaphor. Of mind. What it can achieve and reach high state of greatness and power of liberty and joy for self and others.

When I saw how Ian pushed the pieces away after his loss, it was heartbreaking. I'm glad In persisted, playing in several big tournaments after that. @@cringeginge7663 But.. he was not the best? He didn't qualify the candidates like it was required and he didn't win the candidates like it was required. He qualifies thanks to one person being excluded in the candidates and due to Magnus not defending his title. He didn't even win in the classical portion of chess during the world championship? I agree that the best deserves to be the winner but you picked the worst situation to use that on. The champion should be Magnus, but he choose not to defend- so it should be the winner of the candidates, but he lost in the rapid section to someone who qualifies thanks to some incredibly rare circumstances against someone who was not even supposed to be in the candidates to begin with. Hikaru said he didn't even take the last game seriously since he thought the second place meant nothing and lost his second place on the last game. I really like Ding so don't get me wrong, the video points out it was a very hard time for him and its impressive he manage to pull through it all but still, the situation was so unique and influenced by external factors in so many ways- he was not the best before the candidates, during the candidates and during the classical portion of the game, so it doesn't make any sense for you to say that the person who is the best deserves the title because this is not the situation. Edit: For the record, even if Ian won you could've used the same argument, cause Magnus decided to step out of the way so in no way we know if he would've defended his title or not.

Ding isn't the first nor would he be the last top 10 player to get "tired" of chess. If anything, its an indicator of how demanding chess is at that level where you need to keep finding new ideas while making sure you remember everything from before. Just like "tired" chess players before him, Ding will soon realize that he cant really stay away from what he has dedicated his entire life to and will keep coming back. Prime example are Kasparov and Kramnik and Wang Hao.

I think Magnus found a good approach to it. He still loves the game but doesn't want to spend dozens of hours to memorize lines anymore just for the opponent to play for a draw as much as possible. So his solution is to play Blitz and Rapid but no classical. I think Ding could be happy with this too, or maybe 960 classical because he definitely likes spending lots of time lol

@@greense65 Fischer started to 'hate' chess, as it was over burdened with memorising all the increasing opening lines. The big problem with the game, as I find, is to survive the opening, then one can get down to business with the pleasure of the game itself. Hence Chess960 as indeed created by Fischer himself.

Life is too short to live it based on others' expectations. So good for Ding to follow his heart. The only thing is that chess offers a way (at his level) to make income based on pure skill that no one can take away. In other areas of life people can deprive you of income and opportunity out of poor judgement or personal hostility, or bias, or bigotry, and any manner of unfairness. I have seen Ding at no 2 for many weeks in the elo ranking (probably more so than others) so he's really one of the very bests in chess.

I believe he should do what he wants and leave if he feels like it and return in the future if he so wishes! And hey at least he can say, "I'm was a Champion of the world and a part of history!" To his children and grandchildren!

Ding didn't win the tournament. He came in 2nd at the Candidates' Tournament. It was only because Magnus decided not to defend his title that Ding got to play Nepo (who came in 1st) for the title.

@@elimlinrr6898 You're the stupid one that's not what he's saying LOL. If Magnus decided to defend his title, ding wouldn't have gotten through the candidates as he only came second place and therefore wouldn't have played in the WCC match. It would be Magnus vs Nepo again.

I think to simple rules can brigada back the joy.. first the drawn of the king is 3/4 to the attacker... second the vidit-nakamura illegal king mate is a draw providing both kings are not in check... the first one adds more incentive and variations to the game and its an old rule that can be easily accepeted. The second one give you the chance of saving the game even in the worst conditions and adds tons of variations that you cant memorize because never existed before

Great editing and delivery of the narrative, but this is a weird overall message tbh and a bit misleading. Maybe I'm mistaken, I am no authority on this topic. Is there any evidence to suggest that Ding won't defend the title as he stated? Being inactive doesn't imply that he has quit playing/studying/practicing. Given the information presented here, it seems most likely that he is working on improving mental health. Again, great video production. The message seems off the mark.
@MayhemChess
@MayhemChess 7 ай бұрын
I’m not insinuating that he won’t defend his title but I’m saying that there is a chance based on his interviews and his long absence. Being inactive for this long in chess is rarely a good thing (looking from a history standpoint)

The pressure of expectation is just killer, a person loses his/her ability to react naturally to any situation. And it is the parents and family who puts this pressure on their kids. Ding is no doubt a phenomenal chess player but he definately suffers alot because of lack of friends and inability to express himself in public. Too much restriction from the childhood make you unable to make any decision.

"Chess never has been and never can be aught but a recreation. It should not be indulged in to the detriment of other and more serious avocations - should not absorb or engross the thoughts of those who worship at its shrine, but should be kept in the background, and restrained within its proper province. As a mere game, a relaxation from the severe pursuits of life, it is deserving of high commendation." Paul Morphy
