I have to thank you, I forgot what the series was called, what it looked like and everything, I played this game while my brother and dad played Yu-gi-oh! and got me into it, and I forgot all about this game, I did have one of the GM games but forgot what it was called and misplaced it. BUT when I saw the main character I remembered everything. It bothered me so much that I could not remember, thanks.

Negative Legend hey can you touch on a confusing topic for me it's in the yu-gi-oh fanbase and the fanbase in general is completely confused: what happened to yu-gi-oh 5d's particularly their dub season which was dubbed buy the infamous 4kids media though to say that they ran into some problems along the way is a massive understatement not only was this during the point in time that they were being sued by konami and tv tokyo for lying about the amount of money that they made and gave konami and tv tokyo only 10% of the shares which mind you wasn't part of the partnership in the first place but they were also deal with problems on set to one of the lead female characters in the japanese version being part of a bdsm cult being forced to remove the arcadia movement one of the enemy factions of the show which was a ligit cult not to mention they had to sensor a couple of things too one dark signer boss misty became a dark signer because she drove her car off of a cliff because she was destraut about the loss of her brother who was killed by sayer the leader of the arcadia movement who thought that toby could be pschic so they put him through some test and electric shocks to see if it is true it just ends up with toby dead and never being heard from again but that isn't the reason for the post I'm genuinely curious can you find out about the yu-gi-oh 5d's seasons that went undubbed maybe this will help you abit.

I spent nearly 12 years working to get the game back. I imported cards from Japan, I tried to create gatherings, meade over a 100 videoes on the game, thought myself japanese, went to Japan and got collebration partners there, as welll as the rest of the world and such, just waiting for it to return. I feel like I failed, though I have a hope deep inside it will return, though I don't find it realistic, not after they created Kaijudo. yet I tried to mix the cards from the two games, the rules were basically the same, so with sleves, this was no problem. Just seems like everything I loved to do and was really good at just dissapear.

This was actually insanely popular in Norway, it was incredibly common for children to play Dual Masters in schools. I personally had a collection of a few thousand cards, and I wasn't even the top collector in my school. I also learned later that it was also really popular in other schools in Norway. Unless my timeline memory is fucking up, what killed it here was Beyblade! It just took over. Simple as that. If my timeline is incorrect, I think it was the power creep by introduction of triple breakers and the uncommon rarity power attacker triple breaker from what I believe was D-3? edit: the triple breaker I refer to that kinda ruined our playground matches at least, was Bolgash Dragon.

It was also insanely popular in Singapore, at least around 2006 or so! Wait? The game got less interesting because every deck tried to win in 3-5 turns? Have you seen modern Yu-Gi-Oh? Metadecks over here slaughter you in 1-2 turns if the hand is good. Any deck that can't kill in 2 turns with a possibility of 90%, is Tier 2. But hey, Tier 2 and 3 are still very funny. ^^

Well I personally like the game how it is now. When you have a couple of friends that don't play the Meta, you can have a lot of good decks. Old Yu-Gi-Oh sucked too. Chaos snd Goat were the only good decks back in the day, but now you can literally play anything. After Links got announced I left the game (but I'm back already) and tried Force of Will as a substitude. Lets just say, that this game is fundimentally broken. It is in fact so broken, that they often have to change the RULES so that you can't abuse some cards. ^^'

i STILL have my duelmasters cards in good condition, sure it was a watered down version of magic but i loved that any card in from nearly anywhere could be a mana source instead of using god awful land cards. got a card in hand that's totally useless right now? BOOM its mana instead. the english dub anime was scripted like a parody, it had american references abound and was more of a comedy compared to the Japanese original which was much more dramatic. I actually liked the english dub of the duelmasters, it was "ghost stories" dub levels of hilarity but in kid form. the video games were garbage, the PS2 one only allowed up to five monsters where the actual card game was unlimited amount. the GBA games resolved skills in a incorrect order which allowed bullshit combo plays that wouldn't exist. I still liked them as a guilty pleasure heh. kajudo card game was even more unbalanced then TCG duelmasters. when it first came out, rush style decks were utterly broken. then they made anti-rush meta but that allowed you to summon stronger monsters way too early in a game which made weaker creatures nearly useless. its cartoon series counterpart was surprisingly good tho.

I heard that the whole conception behind DM was that a Japanese company came to WotC with interest in creating an MtG anime/manga. WotC turned down the offer, stating that they already had a dedicated approach to how they wanted to market MtG but made the counteroffer of creating a game based off of the anime/manga of a new IP.

I think the biggest thing that killed Duel Masters potential in the US was that the anime was... Well, crap, to put it simply. It was pretty heavy on the comedy and the dubbing felt like they went for the 'actors just make whatever jokes they want' method seen in Samurai Pizza Cats and Ghost Stories, but lacked the bite that those dubs had. They mostly just made pop-culture references where the reference just is the joke, such as one episode where one character repeatedly quoted the 'no soup for you' line from Seinfeld. Really. It was also slow to get the plot going with the first few story arcs having no stakes to them. By the time it actually got to having a plot with stakes that could rival Yu-Gi-Oh's fantastical narrative, most people had already given up on it and the show was moved to an early morning time-slot where it had no chance of building an audience. Honestly, catching a few of the later episodes where this dumb comedy had suddenly gained apocalyptic scenarios just felt surreal. The last major problem with the show was that it seemed to have no interest in actually showing off the game it was supposed to promote. Anytime there was a game going on, the show would constantly cut to the side characters cracking unfunny jokes and it was impossible to follow what was going on in the actual game. While the Yu-Gi-Oh anime had plenty of moments of getting the source material wrong, it still knew to keep the game front-and-center and did everything it could to get viewers invested in the product. The Duel Masters anime just seemed bored of it's own game, so, of course, the audience wasn't going to get invested either. Even after watching a few episodes, I still had no idea how the game was supposed to be played because they never showed a proper structure of match. I gave both the show and the game a shot back in the day just to see if there was anything there, but I quickly dropped them both because it was clear from the start that Yu-Gi-Oh was built on a stronger foundation and was going to outlive it on both fronts.

The problem with a straight dub is that western audiences tend to dismiss things as clones/ripoffs of things, rather than judge them on their own merits. Every tokusatsu show is a ripoff of Power Rangers. It doesn't matter if it's a property older than Super Sentai, it's still a ripoff of Power Rangers. Every monster catching franchise is a Pokemon clone. It doesn't matter if the gameplay is entirely different, or the stories are nowhere similar. You collect creatures/robots, it's a Pokemon clone. A straight dub of Duel Masters would've easily resulted in "Yu-Gi-Oh! clone" branding. Granted, that might've still been better than producing a show that seemed to mock the game it was promoting. The promotional aspect of the show only got worse with Kaijudo. The show is a beast tamer storyline. The cards aren't even featured. I'm not sure a single one of those kinds of shows have taken off (Huntik, Magi-Nation, Redakai, etc.).

This is my story with Duel Master(its a long story) I liked card games as a kid and the card games I played were Yugioh, Vanguard and Pokemon. I even had communities and friends who at least played one of them(most all grew out of it and played League of Legend), and at 2012, my family had to move to Japan. I was determined to find a card game community to continue my passion for card games. I thought my first thing I was gonna do was by the Japanese versions of the decks I played in America, but things when different then I expected. I overheard by new friends I made in my Japanese school talking about a game. I couldn't tell what game but I knew it was a card game. So I just joined the conversation. Maybe you can tell by now, it was Duel Master. Tbh, I've never heard about Duel Master until that point. I was disappointed it wasn't Yugioh and etc, but i was desperate for playing card games with real people, so I asked my friends to tell me the rules and how to get started. I had trouble getting used to the game since my senses were still Yugioh based. Now, I go to local tournaments, buy merch, and have discussion. The BEST part is that apparently my friends were also having trouble getting back into DM for having a long hiatus from the game and I was the opportunity for them to continue made me have a personal connection build through a CARD GAME. I thought that only happens in anime and I was touched.

as an norwegian, i remember this being really popular in my t elementary school . my school had a ton of people collecting and playing duel masters, and i remember there was a period where during breaks people would gather together to either play or trade cards between them, and it was basically the highlight of the day for me . if i recall, i had an massive collection of over 2000 cards or something like that. for me, duel masters have such a special place in my heart and it was kinda sad that it died so quickly here in the west .

Thanks for this great video. I am one of the founders of DM Reborn along with ELTP and we try our best to repopulate the game in Europe and the US. We have several stable communities running in Europe already doing small offline tournaments from time to time and also established online tournaments very recently. If you have questions regarding the game or want to catch up on it, feel free to join our community and we can help you out or check the Duel Masters Wikia which we are also closely working together with. :) Again, thank you so much for making a video about our beloved card game. It is beautiful game with an absolute rollercoaster history which deserves way more attention.

I actually used to remember Duel Masters when i was a child. Despite the fact that it was a ripoff of Yugioh it was a fun card game on its own right. The old ones i used to remember but the new ones look so alienating to me in the point of being way too different to what i used to remember. I loved the Card Artworks since it was pretty cool and the 5 card types which includes Grass, Fire, Water, Light and Dark (Actually when i said about it why doesnt it remind me that the types are also ripoff of Pokemon Card games). Nowadays i did see Yugioh cards in Gamestop as oposed to small shops and I would want to see Duel Masters back but changing back how it used to be since they all look the same and hybrid ones can have two colors but they could have the new artwork kinda thing like those new Pokemon Card games. I used to remember Duel Masters as the Popular Cards as ones like Yugioh and Pokemon cards since they were the most popular card games in th 2005 and 2006 but for now Duel Masters is still in Japan only, Yugioh being in workshop for either the fans of the card game or for board gamers and Pokemon well i think its for collectors, Fans of the Genre or for those who are fans of the card game. #GOODOLDDAYS

I played the Duel Masters game on PS2. I had absolutely no idea how to play it. I didn't enjoy playing it because it was so confusing. Some games are fun even if you don't know what to do. You can go around doing random stuff, but that game was not fun because it was way to complex. On the other hand, the Yugioh games I have played and seen played are a lot less difficult to understand. In Duel Masters on PS2, it was something like (Note it has been years since I played it) "You need points to play cards. You get points by either waiting turns or playing certain cards. You get 1 point at the start of the duel." which is not to hard, but compare it to Yugioh where it is more like (From the perspective of someone who doesn't play card games much) "You can play monsters up to a certain strength, indicated by the number of stars. Monsters above this level either require cards to summon them or a certain number of sacrifices from weaker monsters. If you don't need a specific monster or monsters to summon it then you just need to get 1-3 monsters on the field, put it down and take the sacrificed monsters to the graveyard." So instead of "You need to wait 5 turns to play the Ultimate Death Monster" and hope the foe doesn't steal the points from you, it is "You need 3 monsters on the field to play the God of All" If i am honest, one sounds much more broken than the other. if you have 5-10 points saved to play the "I win" card, and you don't need to do much other than wait out the turns, that is broken.If the foe has no way to counter it, or take the points from you or get rid of your points than you can win so quick by by playing cards that raise points. Heck, if you don't have the Death Monster, having 3 powerful cards on the field that only need 3 instead of 5-10 would be kind of broken. Compare it to "If you have 3 monsters on the field, you can summon (insert monster) but you need to get 3 monsters out first, and you can't summon until your next turn." which can be countered by defeating the monsters before the next turn which can be countered by a few other cards. It doesn't seem easy, but it gets much easier the more you play and it is more fair for a less skilled foe or a foe with less useful cards because they couldn't afford the best cards. Duel masters may be more complex but it doesn't get people hooked on it if it is too hard to understand. MtG is also a bit of an example. The general public viewing it as nerdy aside, more people would likely play if they knew how simple it was. i don't know if it is simple or not, but from what I have seen it is somewhere between simple and complicated. Yugioh is there as well, but Yugioh is more causal friendly. If you compare MtG to Yugioh, MtG is a little more competitive even in casual play. You have to follow certain rules to play casually. In Yugioh if you want to play casually, like you are playing with a friend who doesn't play in tournaments, you simply get 2 decks and start playing, follow what the cards say in their description, keep track of health and that is basically it. In MtG you have a little more to do than that. In Duel Masters, you have even more than that. I don't play many card games or any really, but I do know what is easy to learn, and what is easy to play from the start. Yugioh is easy to play from the start, if you have the right amount of cards or a deck. MtG or Duel Masters may be simple to understand, but to play casually it is not. If you need a specific scoreboard to play the game or a little time to make the scoreboard just to play, it is not worth it. In Yugioh you need a pencil and any sheet of paper to play casually.

I friggin love Duel Masters and is easily my 3rd favorite card game. I tried so hard to get my friends to play Kaijudo when it came out but they all said "its fun and all but I'll only play it if it takes off", yeah unfortunately no one wanted to get into it till it proved itself. I think the biggest issue other than poor management in regards to the game, the sheer stupidity of the meta decks and lack of a banlist or set rotation was ridiculous, was the sheer lack of marketing. I didn't see a single ad or poster for Kaijudo anywhere and honestly it felt like WOTC just shat it out with a TV show and hoped the TV show would sell it, which obviously didn't work. It also didn't help that in my local area the card stores in town all had Kaijudo tournaments at the same time as the Yugioh ones, dunno if this was true else where. Side note I still have the first few episodes of the Duel Masters TV show on VHS and yeah while its debateable that the game was a Yugioh ripoff the show ripped off Yugioh and Pokemon. Gotta give them props for naming the first volume "The Good, The Bad and the Bolshock", that naming could of gone very badly. Side side note, I've played and owned the Ps2 game and Sempai Legends and I find the two games to be pretty good overall. They're both pretty much 1 to 1 transitions of the card game with a bit of story. Also if I had to request you to make a "Whatever happened to?" video I think it'd be interesting to see your take on Weiss Schwarz. It got pretty big in my area for like a year then disappeared.

The game was popular with Singaporean primary school students in around 2006 or so! I never had interests in any TCGs, and so forgot about its existence until I came across this video in my KZfaq recommendations! Other games popular with Singaporean primary school students around 2006-2008 included Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokémon TCG, as well as Pokémon Kraks. I'm imagining that a sizable amount of those students wouldn't have had pay TV back then, and instead just watched Kids Central (maybe also other Mediacorp channels like Channel 5 and CNA), which tended to focus more on original content and anime, if I recall correctly, as opposed to importing programmes from smaller national and regional TV channels in other English-speaking countries, like Teletoon in Canada and PBS in the US, which they did, but anime made up most of their programming, or at least I remember not watching Kids Central most of the time and instead choosing to watch pay TV channels like Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, and Cartoon Network.

Yooo I still play that game. They have these cool new cards with really strong abilities. And they have this new "tribe" called "Jokers" who are insanely strong. Also Isn't Duel Masters originally based off of MAGIC: The Gathering? If you read the original manga I think it was called Duel Masters: Magic the Gathering. Magic failed in Japan then they made Duel Masters to change it up and it stuck in Japan. And this is just all my knowledge from playing Duel Masters in Japan.

I use a deck with the (i'm sorry if my english translation sucks) "The Revolution Dragon of Time Miradante" and it's a quad-color deck without fire. It contains 25 shield triggers and you try to stay alive for at least 6 turns and if you do the right combo you can perform a time stop. It's a deck called Dragon's Blade, and you can check it out on tradingcardsonline. The author is jeffoguys (me) and it's my favorite deck. It's not that strong but I put a lot of hours coming up with it and when you can perform the time stop it's really cool.

I've heard of Duel Masters, and tried out the Kaijudo Showdown video game. Then I tried Senpai Legends and Shadow of the Code. It's a pity the DM TCG cancelled in North America, but the memories of those times won't be forgotten.

Damn, I loved Duel Masters. When I got my first packs when I was 5-7 years old, they were the coolest things ever. I didn't learn to play the actual game until years after they'd stopped printing them, but I still have my old cards and I also ordered some new ones a few years ago. Still have the GBA games too.

Anyone else not a fan of full-card artwork?
@westhescrub
@westhescrub 6 жыл бұрын
i'm not. I can tolerate it on Pokemon cards, but not a full card game with full arts on each card. just limits the ability to read. Plus, if the card isn't interesting enough for me to want to see the full art, why should i have to?
@Bezaliel13

Exactly, it just makes the text, that as you mentioned gets limited, mess up the art and less legible.

Loved this as a kid and still think the design and style is top tier. The world just wasn't ready for a game other than yugioh and magic, but now would be a good time to revive it with the big boom in games like hearthstone, runtera, gwent.

I have the first book around somewhere, if it wasn't thrown away last time I moved, that details how to play, some basics about the civilizations, and has pictures of every card in the first set, as well as some deck lists. I think it's in WAY to bad condition if I still have it, damaged and missing pages etc. But man, did I love this game when I was a kid. I remember being the king of the playground at this game when I was in 1st grade :P Probably one of the major reasons I play Magic the Gathering today

Wizards didn't buy the license to Duel Masters from anyone. They developed the game. In fact, they continue to develop the game for Japan (which is they're listed in the copyright description on the bottom of new cards and the anime continues to credit American Wizards employees). Duel Masters started out as a way for Takara (now Takara Tomy, a long-term partner of Hasbro's) to promote Magic: The Gathering (which they distributed in Japan) to younger audiences there (this is why the manga debuted years before the OCG did and why the first Duel Masters manga volume's cover has Shobu wielding MTG cards with MTG text next to him), but eventually morphed into its own distinct game specifically designed for that audience. That's why it shares a number of similarities with MTG. Any confusion related to Reality Simulations came from them releasing an entirely unrelated game called "Duelmasters" in 1980s. They let the trademark (ownership of the name) to that expire, Wizards snatched up "Duel Masters" for its western release, causing Reality Sims to rename their game as Duel2. The anime and manga's storylines have long moved beyond Shobu. Starting in 2011, Shobu's younger brother, Katta, became the lead with Duel Masters Victory. He remained the main character until last year's Duel Masters relaunch, which stars his son (and therefore Shobu's nephew), Joe. The west remains an enigma for this franchise and likely will continue to do so. At this point, the Japanese game is impenetrable. We're just too far behind and there's realistically no way to catch up. Takara Tomy continues to claim Duel Masters is the most popular card game in Japan, so there's not going to be much interest on their part for a total brand reboot. Kaijudo was a valiant effort, but the animated series, which was meant to draw in kids, was tied to a TV channel no one watches (so much so that months after Kaijudo ended, Hasbro divested 10% of their ownership in the channel, forcing a rename from The Hub to Discovery Family). Older TCG fans were miffed that it wasn't compatible with vanilla Duel Masters, were turned off by the childish western aesthetic, or knew better than to invest in a splinter of a decade+ running foreign TCG. Ironically, despite that uphill battle, it was older fans who took best to Kaijudo. The first few sets were given wide retail releases (Wal-Mart, Toys "R"Us, Target, etc.) and didn't do very well, but the game did a lot better in hobby stores. Also, you mistakenly said Kaijudo ended in 2004 ... There was also a third English Gameboy Advance game. Interesting to note is that none of these video games were translations of Japanese releases. They were all-new western developed games.

Such a shame. The anime was eh compared to Yu-Gi-Oh, but i find DM trading card game to be much better than YGO's and MTG. Such a shame...

I love DDM! I actually had a handful of friends to play it with who bought them out of boredom, but I had to twist their arm. Idk why I just thought it had potential, was an interesting idea, and a fresh departure from the usual TCG. Too bad the sets are rare and ridiculously priced now.

I loved Duel Masters, I found the rules easy to approach and I liked he anime a on. Kaijudo was pretty good too, bu no as good as he OG anime which never stopped airing in Japan. Its a real shame it got buried as aside from Yugioh and the Pokemon TCG and Magic no other cards are really that popular anymore.

I was really into the game for several years so I was devastated when I learned that TCG would end with the 12th set, but the OCG would continue and have all kinds of cool shit. Even to this day, I consider this to have superior aesthetics to most other card games, except maybe MTG. The overcomplicated and crowded arts just have their certain appeal. And the world building wasn't half-bad, despite a atrocious animated TV-series. Haven't looked at Kaijudo however, it seemed to die almost as quickly as it had spawned.
