I agree, not a particularly well crafted documentary. One aspect of Paulus' personality is completely missed: he was a committed Christian. His faith prevented him from committing suicide. His subsequent transformation may have been based on his faith, or built on it.

Interesting documentary. Appears to be accurate. An important note in the annals of WWII.

If Hitler hadn't been such a hard head he could have let Paula's try to breakout before it was too late

Paulus had to know he'd be wiser to choose West Germany but his captors probably had a part in his decision. I do think he would have been able to achieve the same goals in the Federal Republic. If Speer could come out to remain in West Germany so could have Paulus. Both Germanys had disgruntled Nazis to deal with so I believe it was the decision of Stalin to keep his prize within quick access.

He was Field Marshal for something like 1 day before surrendering. I'm sure he was bitter at Hitler, Jodl and Keitel for throwing him and the entire 6th Army under the bus. He should have been ordered to retreat immediately rather than let the 6th Army get surrounded and cut off.

Not excusing what Nazi Germany did, but let's not forget that Nazi Germany was begat by the the harsh conditions imposed on Germany by the Allies after WW1. And WW1 was fought by colonial powers seeking to protect and expand their colonies, so the UK and France are partly to blame for that.

Paulus was a yes man. He was first a Nazi boot licker to advance his fortunes. When that did not pan out he very easily became a Soviet boot licker. People like Paulus don't care about causes, they care about themselves. Out of the roughly 95,000 German 6th Army POW's taken at Stalingrad, roughly 6,000 survived. Paulus made a conscious decision to live in relative comfort while his men died. A yes man till the end.
