In my opinion, Humble Pie ended in 1975. None of the later bands ever came close to the greatness of 1969-75. RIP Steve Marriott and Greg Ridley.

Went to a Humble Pie concert in the early 70s. Foghat opened for them. Wildest concert I ever went to, lol.

How ironic but my friend and I went to a Foghat concert in 1973? 74? with Brownsville Station opening (you know smokin in the Boy's room) and Brownsville blew Foghat totally out of the water. This is Chicago and we wanted the blues, not some version of Humble Pie, although, when I hear Frampton play, at this point, I just think he is one of the best rock guitarists ever, more jazz than rock actually.

My two college roommates and I combined the best stereo components we each had to set up a super stereo system in our rent house. One roommate would play 30 Days in the Hole at full blast. Actually he would play the entire album Smokin' but that song in particular blew the place up and is still indelibly marked in my music memory, haha. That will be 50 years ago this autumn and that particular roommate, my friend and a Vietnam combat vet, is long dead from a strange cancer probably caused by Agent Orange. RIP Gerald ❤

I always thought it odd that the Small Faces aggressively resisted Frampton joining but, once Marriott left, they hired two to replace him (Rod Stewart and Ron Wood) thus expanding the lineup as Marriott wanted.

I know what you mean. There's a British blues band called Dr Feelgood that was hugely influential. There were line-up changes but two of the original members are now dead and none of the current line-up are original members. Play Feelgood or Humble Pie songs, but don't take the band name.

Thanks for your documentary. Very interesting though you didn’t cover Steve’s death. Had no idea the name was still being used. I remember at the end of the 90s when they reformed for the tribute gig with the Ridley/Shirley/Frampton/Clempson lineup and played the Astoria gig but also the Walthamstow Royal Standard which I was very surprised about because that venue was not only tribute band central but also by that point the graveyard for some of the less-successful early 80s NWOBHM bands and the Pie were way better than that. Didn’t go to either gig. Always thought they were best with Clempson rather than Frampton on lead. I also remember a CD with a blue cover credited to Humble Pie from about that time which had Jerry Shirley and Tim Hinckley (who played piano on 3 or 4 tracks on their cardboard gravestone “Street Rats” LP) on it along with two or three names I didn’t recognise and thought that was already taking the piss. Never bought it but I know it exists. I’m appalled that the name is still in use with no original members but unfortunately this kind of situation isn’t unique to Humble Pie. No Marriott no Pie as far as I’m concerned. RIP Steve & Greg.

@colinmartin2921

Marriott always struggled with mental, drug and alcohol problems which steadily destroyed him; according to Ian MacLagen he was never the same after he had a bad acid trip in 1968, and Jerry Shirley said: "Drugs did for Steve." He was unlucky because after Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stones, his good friend Keith Richards wanted Steve to replace him, but Jagger refused to allow Marriott in the Stones. It is interesting to speculate what would have happened to Marriott if he had been taken under the wing of the Stones.

I saw a band calling themselves “Humble Pie” in 1982 or 3, summer of in Racine Wi. No original members. No Steve Marriott =no Humble Pie. They played in fro t of maybe 50 people. Haning said THAT i have just lately been discovering some GREAT Humble Pie live tunes from 70’ 71’ thanks to you tube. “I walk on Guilded Splinters” oh my GOD what a performance! I transferred that over to my UFO PHENOMENON tunes, fits perfect after ROCK BOTTOM. Juuust perfect.

I heard them in two concerts at the Marquee Club in Soho in July / August 1970. There were some very important bands around at that time, but the Pie delivered two concerts on the highest standard. I heard their albums before, but the real thing left me almost breathless. There's also a logical reason to this: Does anybody remember how hot it was in the Marquee back then? No air conditioning, of course ...

I'm from Detroit (blow the reveille)! _"What Happened To Humble Pie !?!"_ *Da Mob!* Most fans have no idea that organized crime has had an influence on what songs we hear. Ironically, (if the stories are to be believed) they used to push toward _'bumblegum'/'PG'/'innocent-love'_ type songs. They didn't like the 'rough-stuff'. When it came to *Hard Cash Promotion;* Steve Marriott got relegated to the 'B' list! It all went to _'The Face'._ (& his solo career) Same thing happened: NY Dolls vs. Aerosmith. (with less _'Mafioso'_ ) Same thing happened to *a lot* of really GREAT Hard R&R bands w/rough edges. If the HP/PF 'minders' cared about ROCK 'N ROLL; They would've strong-armed Frampton into staying in The Pie! (instead of strong-arming Marriott into shutting up & walking away) *ROX ON!* - Dave B.

Pretty great. I'm a fan since '72 with Smokin' but bought Performance there after. Great 2 record set. couple of 'niggles' fans here already know, but... The PF Phenix LP C was not bought. It was a gift from SF fan Mark Mariana. Peter offered to buy and the guy gave it to him !! Peter still speaks highly of their friendship. No, Peter's not well. When he gigs, he plays sitting down. Been battling a degenerative disease for a couple of years now. I believe he's calling it quits after this year. What can i say? I'm a fan, seeing him as a middle act once at Winterland then Headliner twice, yes FCA for DYFLWD. I was there.. Skymyrd Day On The Green, in '77. yep, i was there. More HP releases here but never got to see them. Should have mentioned the passing of Steve. Poor guy lost in his own home during a house fire. It killed him. To me, one of the greatest Rock singers ever. The fact he wrote and played guitar was icing on the 'pie :) Rest In Peace, Steve Marriott. Nice trip back. Rock On.

Marriott was a serious alcoholic. Which is typical of the English. It did not help make the band successful or the heroin use in their band or others. Stick with weed and a little alcohol. Always a wise decision.
