Someone said its a miracle no one drove into the gap. Lets give credit where credit is due. A private ambulance was stopped in the middle of this mess, lights on, and EMTs flagging down traffic. Lets find those guys and honor them.

Watched the news and still didn't understand what happened. Thank-you ❤ Was planning to travel same day and time this occured but opted to go the day before. Didn't get any bad feelings but wanted to have the day to myself so pushed to change things around. I'm grateful I didn't get stuck in this. But so sorry others did and hopefully nobody was hurt including truck driver. He made a terrible decision but still feel for the guy and what the outcomenof this could be for him, his family and those he work for. Heart also goes out to those neededing that way for travel and will have their routines changed greatly behind this. Sad all the way around ❤

Capn, that is an exit ramp, and I took the ramp tour on the street view maps. That is one dangerous turn, coming off 95 going into a dark tunnel. We have one I know of like that near Tampa airport, the barrier wall is covered with signs of crashes.

We who lived in the SF Bay Area went thru this when the Bay Bridge lost a section and the Cypress freeway collapsed, and its twin (in design) which allowed traffic to go from I-80 into San Francisco had to be immediately shut down. Traffic patterns were changed far away. I commuted from an earthquake shaken home in Napa to Pleasant Hill, east of the Bay, and traffic increased exponentially as commuters going to south San Francisco from the North Bay either had to choose the Golden Gate Bridge, jamming it with traffic, or go via my commute route to the bridge immediately south of the Bay Bridge, connecting to Highway 101, going to the industrial parks near SFO airport. The 89 earthquake showed weakness in bridge design. A fire like the one on I-95, which I used in '07 after flying into Philly to visit a friend in Stroudsburg PA, is just as bad. The good news is though lives may be affected, it is not as bad as what we experienced and the bridge will be repaired probably way quicker than their worst estimates. Our Bay Bridge was back in service in one month. The Cypress freeway had an alternative since it took years to build a new one, at grade, so traffic was able to recover in not many months, but just a month. I really appreciate your video--though I live now in Phoenix (had to get away from those darn quakes), I have family and friends who live in the DC to Boston corridor and I know the freeway system, unlike Phoenix, is bound to the waters and rivers that are in that corridor. We count our blessings that we have no toll roads in Phoenix, our loop system has grown from the two million that live in our urban area when my wife and I moved here from California in 95, to accommodate the expected six million when Phoenix and Tuscon are eventually joined by those moving to our area in the next ten years or so. Another new Megalopolis, and we are thinking ahead now to add rail service connecting us to the southern eastern seaboard and allowing an alternative to freeway commutes into our airport business parks since our airport is just minutes from our city center.

There are no other good ways to go. If we could get to the bridges we would have a shot and going down the NJ side and coming back over the Ben or the Walt but this is above the bridges. I like the idea of filling in and paving instead of a new bridge. Maybe they could later excavate and create a new underpass. Thanks for the info.

Before the pandemic, I relied on that section of 95 to do my pickup and delivery job every day. Having all of that extra drive time would have totally screwed up my schedule. Glad I don't have to worry about it anymore.

At the 50-second timestamp, you said the cops were knocking on doors asking people to move their cars. That looks to be a couple of blocks away. Why would the neighbors need to move their cars? They aren't knocking down the houses, are they?

Can't the Army Corp of Engineers get a new bridge up quickly?

something similar happened in Ct years ago and filling it in with locally available dirt / gravel was the only way to get a jump start on opening the road for a few months while all the necessary supplies were gathered for a proper repair. Yes, it impacted traffic in town, but that's peanuts compared to a few hundred thousand vehicles trying to squeeze through the same local roads while the highway is closed.

when 495 was shut down back in '14, it was a traffic nightmare, & that was just a bypass around the i-95 section through Wilmington.

The same “accident” occurred in Connecticut in April of this year on the Gold Star Bridge.

It’s been reported today that the tanker truck was carrying 8,500 gallons of 87-octane fuel. They know everything about the truck and driver. The driver was experienced and his remains are unaccounted for. If the driver was in the truck during the fire, I’m not sure what kind of remains they would even find. That fire looked like a blast furnace! They haven’t released his name yet.

Detroit area Hazel Park had a tanker explode and burn Under 9-mile bridge and I 75. The bridge was destroyed on July 15 2009 and was replaced and reopened on Dec 14 2009..Just months. There is hope!!

It's the Exit Ramp. There have been multiple accidents on that curve.

I've been through that exit before for Cottman Avenue. Avenue. That's the way my dad used to take to get to his parents house up there in North East Philadelphia. They live pretty close to Roosevelt boulevard.

The fastest possible fix would be to forego the entrance/exit at this point and make it a through-point and rebuild I-95 on a solid bed there.

I drove tankers for years and had the odd bump and scrape but nothing serious. Feel sorry for the driver as I get where he's at right now. If nobody died its not really a big deal. Bad traffic for a week or two is something we live with, part of living in a big city.

The news interviewed the drivers' cousin. He said his cousin Nathaniel didn't drink, smoke no drugs. I've gotten off that exit many times. It's a bit curvy I always felt and need to slow it down getting off of there.

I remember years ago something similar happened on Route 80 in North Jersey in Denville. Gasoline tanker truck blew up and Route 80 was closed for about a month. All I can say was the traffic was horrible.

A collapse similar to this occurred in Midtown Atlanta on I-85 six years ago. The fire was caused reportedly by arson, not a vehicle fire. They were able to replace two ninety foot sections of bridge (5 lanes each) and re-open in 43 days. Hopefully it will not take months to complete as the PA Governor stated yesterday.

Wow, the exact same thing happened to the on ramp to A38m at Spaghetti junction in Birmingham UK. We heard the explosion about 6am and it was scary. The driver sadly died and I hazard a guess that this driver didn't survive either. Sad.🇬🇧😣 sorry i should have said it didnt collapse but it was severely weakened and everything and needed a lot of reinforcement and was closed for months.

Those passages are too low, cheap to build, but exposed to issues like this. If it was higher, like in many other places, the fire would not affect structurally the overpass.

Think of all the big trucks that use that stretch daily. Then think how all of those behemoths will divert into the much smaller streets where you have lights, stop signs, and intersections? An absolute nightmare starts now.
