Oh no, Lady's leg is very swollen!! Petra stopped by to figure out what happened to lady's leg and got her all fixed up! Then, we hitch up Baron & Ken to feed the cows and do some more training with our Suffolk Punch stallion.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

We have had horses refuse to drink when the heater is in the water as well. Many fellow horseman in Manitoba Canada where we are from have said the same thing. Mu guess is that Lady is very sensitive as Brenda said and feels that current more than the geldings do. Love your channel Jim !

Do you have electric fencing? I've seen that behavior mostly on bad heater and otherwise on horses used to electric fences. I think they sense the electricity and equate it to a shocking fence.

Yes, leakage current,, also 60 hz humm in the water , they could pick up on that 60 hz hum, like a fluorescent light buzz from alternating current, it's a mechanical hammer like ultrasound, soundwave, differant than leakage current, I suspect both are present. Electro-mechanical interference.

Could it also be an odor that the heater creates? I would describe it as an ozone smell, which I find personally unpleasant.

At the end of your video where the horses started to walk away on their own, it reminded me of a story my Dad told me when he was a kid, and that was simply that he would be out cultivating with a horse or doing other chores as well, and at lunch time for example, he said he would simply stop the horse where they were in the field, and he would go in for lunch, and come back afterwards and the horse would be standing right where they had stopped earlier. I thought that was so cool for some reason, and have never forgotten it. This would have been back in the 1930’s.

Oh my…lots of things going on at the homestead this vlog. I feel a little sick at heart for Lady because extra weight and an injury during pregnancy can be tough but she certainly seems to be handling the injury far better than the water tank heater. She cracks me up with her hormonal episodes! I love watching her though. Ken, on the other hand, seems to be getting a mind of his own as well. You know our animals are every bit as much like kids as it gets. Give them an inch and they’ll try for the mile but hey Jim…you still have a bounce in your step when it’s necessary! Glad you didn’t have to run too far to catch your ride😉🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂. As you say, even the most experienced of horse handlers have things happen. Brenda, dear KZfaq friend, thanks so much for making all these vlogs available to us. I for one do not watch tv, all my information comes from the local paper or KZfaq vlogs. These visits mean so much and I get a bit giddy when I see a new Working Horses with Jim episodes pop up. I do have to admit I get a bit glassy eyed every time you show Bucks name tag on the stall. I miss him not being here so you can show off your matched set of percherons but I also miss not seeing Lady and Bill as they too are a sight to see teamed up together. I fully understand all the changes but for me change takes time to adapt to. One day you will have a set of Suffolk Punch horses teamed up and that too will be a sight to see. I think it matters not if it’s Percherons, Belgiums or Suffolk Punch…horses are such a beautiful animal. You show a great deal of each horses personality when you vlog and that is what’s so enjoyable!!!:):):)

There is only one reason for Lady's reaction, there is residual current from the wire or heating element contacting the water. The current is low voltage and Lady is the only horse sensitive to the voltage. Do a "VERY GOOD" visual inspection of the wire and unit for any type of damage or wear to the wire insulation or the connection or the metal ring. Leaking energy will usually leave visual signs. I noticed that you pick up the unit using the chord and that would be my first guess for damage. Hope this helps.😃
@jjwoodworth
@jjwoodworth Жыл бұрын
Jim, I agree with this as a high probability for the problem. You may not even be able to see any defect in the heater and it could have high leakage current. If she does it for every heater, then I would vote on a learned fear from another heater. The 60 hz hum is also very real and she may be sensitive to that too.

Good day Jim & Brenda. We very much enjoy your videos especially the logging ones. I have done a lot of horse logging over the years here in Nova Scotia. Our Clyde mare has the exact same phobia with the heated water tank, had the element tested with no issues but still she will not drink until it is removed. My wife even put her face in it and drank didn't feel anything other than a little silly. Best Regards Peter & Heather

I like your video today. I use to work in the ER of our local hospital and when Jim was explaining Lady's problem, the explanation took me back to working in the ER. People would come in with sprains or swelling and out would come the roll of cotton and the ace bandage. I never got over the size of the wrap. Lady's wrap was sure sizeable. I think your trailer is a working office. The only thing is the noise of the crackling steel. That noise would make me hard of hearing in no time. It does not seem to bother the horse too much. Down here in the Hudson Valley, the snow is 80% gone. Today was so warm we were outside in shirt sleeves. January thaw I guess. Love it until it's too hot!

So glad you showed Ken and Baron walking off. NEVER hesitate to show those things Jim/Brenda. It's important for both new and experienced teamsters to be reminded of that reality...they have minds of their own! We aren't always diligent with tying ours either and have never had a problem (even when a black garbage bag came rolling in the wind and one of our mares decided to stomp it with her back legs...the team still didn't move!). We didn't use a water heater until this year and our mares seem to be a bit hesitant but they are drinking. Many good comments here on sensitivity, humming noises etc.

Few years ago my young QH had cut her back leg very badly(never figured out how) we did minced garlic in food twice a day as natural antibiotics. We hosed it 3 or 4 times a day (pasture we was at had nice friends who did it when they was there) other than some butte paste first day no meds other than some creams on it and swat to help keep flies off, no wrap so it drain and pasture about 2 months later would not know she had bad cut/scrape there.

Your power issue is called 'Trickle Charge' it can be in any water bowl or any metal pipes. We have dairy cattle and we manage trickle charge by testing for it. Even an extremely low trickle that you cant feel can reduce milk production, breeding cream production. I have had horses that sniff the electric fence and if it was on, they walked away, if it was not on they ducked under into the other field. You could have an electrician test for trickle charge

Jim and Brenda, thank you for you videos. They are both educational and enjoyable to watch. As for Lady and the water, I have had several heaters that had low voltage leaks. One was low enough to kill the new gold fish I had just put into my Shetland sheep water tank but it had no effect on the 4 year old larger fish. I use fish to help in the algae growth. Once I corrected the issue the fish were great and I noticed the sheep drank more. Wishing you both the best and we are all excited for Lady’s foal.

Just stumbled across your channel and love it, had to sub! About the water heater being plugged in, growing up we had a small farm and one cow that wouldnt drink out of the water trough with the heater in it. Like yall, unplug and take it out and she was fine. Several years ago, everytime our blower heater would kick on, we had a dog that would run outside. Every 30 minutes. We had a door for the dogs but when she started that we shut it up. When i was in high school i worked in a vet and i do believe animals can hear higher pitched sounds than humans so that may be why. Great channel, loving it

I will pray the Lord heals sweet Lady's infection and the swelling goes down. I've had several bouts of cellulitis myself, even being admitted to the hospital for it once, and it is a serious infection. I wonder if Baron clipped her leg with his hind hoof one time when they were out in pasture? Glad the vet is taking extra good care of Lady. Her baby bump is getting bigger and bigger! I noticed when she came in from pasture this video that she's almost as wide as the doorway!😘 That girl is going to have a big foal, and she's still got 3 months to go!! Bless her heart! I remember when Kenny's leg was swollen last year. There I was about to brag on Baron today when he flubbed up! That booger let me down today!😖 Thankfully the car stopped for them. Had the same problem with a submersible heater. Actually saw the horse jerk back when trying to get herself a drink. Wouldn't touch the water for the rest of the day. I took it out and put in a new one and that solved the problem. We have to have them because it gets and stays so cold here. I took the old heater and put it in a plastic tub plugged it in and touched my finger to the water. Definitely leaking voltage. I now replace them every year.

Interesting to hear they're still using DMSO. We used it way back in the 1980's on our horses. Seeing that bus at the end reminded me of riding my horse down the road when motor homes were fairly new in the early 1970's. One went past me and sped up and the rodeo was on. Thankfully my horse had been trained to stop when you came off his back. He went up in the air and I went down on the ground. Next thing I knew he was looking at me as if to say "what are you doing down there"

We have struggled with "stray voltage" in our water for years . Some animals are more sensitive to others and my shod horses seem to be affected more . We have been able to measure as much as .2volts sometimes . I can't explain where it comes from. We do have heated water bowls , but the power seems to be in all of them , even with the breakers off . Our solution was to put a ground wire in each bowl . Directly to a good ground . No problems since . It did take my old Belgian a while to trust the waterers again . For months I watered him with a bucket to be sure he was getting enough

Hi Chris. I thought the same, Baron instigated the walking away, and Ken went along to get off the road and knowing Jim is coming, kind of makng everyone happy(safe), it was like the horses understood they where standing in a car dangerous place, I kind of seen it as smart horses doing whats best for the Team, but certainly, Jim will have that under control. Regarding water , Chris, I was thinking gfci, other gfi ckt, Jim should have a certified electrician wire an outlet with a gfi. But...I like Brenda's idea, take it out until everyone is done drinking. . "When in doubt.., get it out.." (We never used tank heaters on the farm, but my Dad would wrap the well casing with heat tape.. (freezing water was an issue as it approaching 100 below with windchill I remember!)

@@johnkomosa4089 Hi John, totally true what you say. Ken is an experienced horse, and people won't believe how good they unterstand the context they are in. In Austria there is a logger who let the horses pull the logs to the landing by themselves. He shows them the path once or twice then they go alone with the log and stand still at the landing. Unbelievable, isn't it? Me, being far from that level, but have still found out that my horse stops automatically at certain crossings, when driving him, without giving him a command anymore. He somehow knows the situation and that it's important to stop in that situation, of course after many repeats. My very best greetings to Alaska! -Chris

Wonderful video! I thought “oh oh…” when Jim got off to close the gate! I can feel stray voltage! I used to feed bottle calves at a dairy. We would run milk from the lines into a smaller elevated barrel, and I would dilute with hot water before filling the calf bottles. At first when I’d turn on the water it was just a very very faint tingle, but it finally got that I could really feel it, and it was an actual shock. My boss couldn’t feel it; and he thought I was nuts! Then milk production dropped and the cows were starting to act up in the milk parlor. So he brought in the electrician-yep stray voltage! So, every time I felt the slightest tingle; I’d tell the boss, he’d call the electrician and yep it would get taken care of!! My boss was so happy that I would detect it, and therefore it didn’t effect the cows or the production. The electrician was amazed too-he would test me by asking “can you feel anything?” My boss would be watching the meter-when I finally said “nope” the meter wouldn’t register any stray voltage! Perhaps a new tank heater would be a good idea. The boys could all be getting a slight electrical charge-I don’t know if that can hurt them; but I would imagine that wouldn’t be good on their hearts… God Bless

Had an old timer tell me if you keep your horses in a barn that every time you're out working with them, always keep the barn door shut. That way if they do get away from you and head back to the barn they can't run into the barn with what ever they're hitched to. You get a pretty bad feeling in the pit of your stomach watching your horse/horses head down the road or across the pasture and you ain't in what there hitched to. Glad you got a hold of them and thank you for sharing it, a lot of people wouldn't.

Yep, I have issues with a few of my cows not wanting to drink, when the Richie hot water cup element is on, yet the other cows have no problem with it. I believe by watching my cows there is a subtle electric current in the water they can sense! They will drink because that is their only source of water in winter! I am in Canada on the prairies and it gets mighty cold here! I will turn off the element as early in spring as possible to give them comfort. I’ll turn off the breaker at the panel when I notice those cows standing by the cup! I absolutely adore 🥰 watching both of you working your horses! I’m a female farmer own my own beef farm all by myself! But I’ve always done all my farm work with tractor and quad! I admire all the precious hard work you do to keep your farm operating well! 😊

Yes we have had lots of problems with heaters in our tanks. Mostly its just horses sensing the slightest voltage. Even had bottomless tire tank which is basically grounded, shock them, changed out the heater on that one. But most are just rubber or plastic tanks that need to have the water grounded, just put a copper wire that is connected to a ground rod into the tank.

Hi Jim, water is conductive as you know even in a plastic tank. What happens is the heater sends out electricity into the tank when it's on heating the water, not enough to harm the animals but enough that they feel like a really soft tingle to their lips. You need to put a brick in the bottom of the tank with a copper wire attached to it and ground the other end of the wire outside of the tank. This will stop the tingling. I know...sounds weird to ground the water in the tank, but that's what needs to happen. Also, think about replacing your heater every couple of years, for how much they are it will be money well spent on safety.

I'm with Lady...I don't like shots either. You can't blame them though because antibiotic shots are rarely happily received by horses. And the more you have to give, the more they dislike the whole process. But, very glad Lady seems to be doing much better and hope it continues. Plus, Ken is still adjusting to life without Buck. Good job one and all!

About Ladies fear of the water heater...With my stallion I had, he got shocked 1 time from a faulty heater that warmed the water. He always carried that fear each time he drank. Heaters and wires can give off an odder as they age. Animals can sometimes smell it if they are real sensitive.

Maybe a new water heater? I’ll bet Lady’s sharp eye and nose would pick up that it’s new.

We had the same problem with one of our horses and the water heater. it turns out that the polarity of the power outlet was reversed and was causing the horses with no shoes to be shocked. It was only with the horses that were barefoot. not sure why but it took us a while to figure it out.

It's cool to watch 60 milking cows come into the barn and go right to their stantion.. It was funny because sometimes they would grab a mouthful of hay from their neighbor as they made their way to their own stall, ah ha.😄.

Maybe Lady had a shock at some time or perhaps something of the same shape worries her? I do know this, electricity and water are not friends, I suggest being very careful and not touching the water when the heater is in, you just never know !

YES! Even with everything grounded properly there can be an infinitesimal stray current that only the horses can feel. It's maddening to you but they really do feel it, Jim.

There was a true story movie, about a guy who had a dairy. Cows weren't feeding well, and milk production was decreased. He finally had the electric line cut to the barn, and eventually things got back to normal. Now, I was working in a farrowing barn in a large commercial production facility. Similar circumstances, animals going off feed, wouldn't drink much. Initial checks showed no stray voltage. Tried again, with a different meter, and there was stray current coming off the motor on the feed bin transferring back to the metal crates inside. We, as humans didn't feel the shock, but apparently the animals did. OR, maybe she has her "pregnancy hormones", causing her to act spooky, since none of the other horses are acting different...🙂. Another case of how well you know your animals, and try to help them the best you can! Btw, ask Lady to drop that foal on May 13th; my birthday! Blessings to all of you!

Having been a chairman for years I suspect your water heater has a minute voltage leak Animal noses are very sensitive to what is commonly refered too as Stray Voltage

Animals are far more sensitive to certain things than us humans. I have a cat who runs out of the kitchen when I turn on the microwave,but the other cat takes no notice. He also was terrified of the smoke alarm chirping when it needed a new battery,and would not go in the kitchen. Strange huh? Enjoy your channel and watch every horsey channel on KZfaq. With regard to the swollen rear left leg,I find it interesting that so many draft horses have the same problem,and always the left rear leg. The different Vet's who treat these horses,all seem to be a bit confused and offer various therapies,so I wonder if this is just a coincidence,or should more research be done on this problem. Fletcher Farms, Amarillo have quite a few rescue Belgian drafts,and a mate who arrived from the auction with a massive swollen rear,left leg. Also Horse Plus Humane Society have had quite a few rescue drafts going through,with exactly the same issue. So strange!
