On the South Bluffs of Memphis standing tall next to the Mississippi River, sits a rare feat: a professional sports arena that survived demolition and was succesfully repurposed. The Memphis Pyramid, which as of now boasts destination retail, once was a one of a kind arena, housing the NCAA tournament, legendary concerts and NBA playoff games. However neither one of those ideas was what the venue was originally intended for, and conspiracies surround its entire story. In this video, we'll explore the origins behind why someone wanted to build a stainless steel pyramid in Memphis Tennessee, why their original idea didn't work out, and how the venue survived demolition to become one of the most unique hospitality experiences in America.

I worked for a scaffolding company and we got a contract to build some scaffolding hanging from the ceiling in the Memphis pyramid. 300+ feet high it was a permanent install one of the coolest installs I ever did with that company.

I was at The Big Dig (the groundbreaking for when they first built the pyramid). Me, my mom and the guy she was dating and his kids all sat on top of a parking garage and watched as they had a helicopter fly in and drop a giant "shovel" made of lights into the spot with fireworks going off.

The company I work for is in Tennessee. I spend a LOT of time all over Tennessee. I’m not poking to tell the fine people of Tennessee how to rum their state but I would suggest they at least explore the possibilities of giving West Tenn to Arkansas or something. Memphis doesn’t exactly fit with the rest of the state

@@darylb5564culturally Memphis has way more in common with Mississippi & Arkansas than Tennessee...it's the heart of that particular region called the Delta which goes from far-south Illinois all the way down through the delta's of Arkansas & Mississippi...I know we're talking bad about Memphis here but me personally I've always had a good time there

I live in middle tennessee also and I agree with you a hundred percent. Rite on the other side of I 40 is Memphis's tallest skyscraper. It's completely abandoned & a couple of windows broken out at the top. The memphis bell used to sit right down on the waterfront. The citizens of memphis cared nothing for it and let it deteriorate horribly. It was removed and restored.Thank goodness. I think it's in Ohio now. Memphis is a lot like a third world country.

@@alphax4785 It’s been a very impressive Bass Pro Shop for around ten years. I was living in Memphis when it opened. I’m pretty sure it opened in 2014, but it could have been early 2015. I’m not really a fan of Bass Pro Shop (or sporting goods stores in general), but this is one of the most impressive retail businesses I have ever seen.

First of all, you can screw right off woth that false title there. You were completely better off without adding in the word "Abandoned" there in all caps. And screw the DraftKings ad too. Second, while it's nice to see that there are more channels here doing videos on the Pyramid, speaking as a native here, there's not really much helping this city even if there was another attempt at making something as ambitious as that again. Especially with how crime ridden its been becoming more and more. There's a reason why it's known as the most dangerous city in the country numerous times.

There is nothing about Memphis or any city in the US that makes me think, "yea, a giant steel and glass pyramid would be awesome here." Now with that being said.... Even worse of an idea a pyramid is in Memphis is having it enclose a Bass Pro store... Lmfao. There is no wildlife, hunting, fishing, or any other outdoor sport/activity has any relation with a pyramid. In my opinion anyway.. a concert venues/event center would make for a better fit.
@keijijohnson9754
@keijijohnson9754 Ай бұрын
Considering the fact that the city is named after an actual city feom Ancient Egypt, it made more sense having a monument that hardens back to that. It's just a shame it degraded into a Bass Pro Shop.
