Mitsubishi was once known as a powerhouse in the tuner car scene; but now that only thing we know them for is scandals and SUVs. So what happened? Today we talk about some things that may have led to their downfall and why there's more odds of a R36 coming from Nissan; than an Evo from Mitsubishi..If you enjoyed, don't forget to sub here - bit.ly/3kXgWr0

@@bluspectre2042😅 Sports car market share is 3.1% world-wide 👈🏿 The R35 Skyline is the modern interpretation of the 3000GT. In 9yrs, the 3000GT VR4 sold over 25k units. In 15yrs the R35 has sold 13,417 units. Perspective, total 3000GT/Stealth sold was well over 150k units in 9yrs in a RECESSION. The crossover, and pick-up truck is what sells. Small cars, SUVs, and midsized cars sell between 8-10% of the market each. Crossover's 45% and pickups 19%. The 3000GT was a luxury car, right now 5.3% are buying luxury (sedans) cars. The fact it was a luxury sports GT, it would fall into a very niche market of 0.7%. Now imagine telling your boss to make a car that cost billions in R&D to maybe make 0.7% 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 There's several car's that are the 3000GT today. That's the R35 Skyline, Ferrari 812, Ferrari F12, and Ferrari 599GTO. Those are the modern interpretations of the 3000GT. A Skyline can be had for $50k. The closest the 812 is $400k minimum. The 3000GT/Stealth sold over 150k units which was more than all its Japanese rivals combined. The VR4 sold 25k +877 for the VR4 Spyder which was still more than the others turbo models, and during a 10yr US recession. The R35 has been out since 2008 and its sold as of 2023, 13,417 units and the 3000GT cost $50k back then. For a sport GT, I'd say it sold damn well. America has the market locked with Mustang, Corvette and now the Charger, Challenger and Camaro meh. The problem isn't Mitsubishi, its the CONSUMERS. Most people stopped buying sports cars. Why? They can't afford them, or the fuel. Mitsubishi is racing again. They race there entire lineup in rally or Dakar. The entire line up are super reliable. Just buy a R35 Skyline, and put a Mitsubishi logo on it 😂

later foreign markets also got the vr4 galant which was planned to replace the lancer but they cancelled it and then came out with a much lamer newer galant. so the plan at one point was to abandon developing the lancer and make a better awd galant(than they did) even just awd v6 one would have been pretty cool. but i hear you, 3000gt turbo manual were pretty sweet.

It is not just the Lancer Evo that has a legacy. The Pajero is legendary in Dakar. 12 victories for Mitsubishi. The most of any manufacturer. Mitsubishi also recently won The 2022 Asia Cross Country Rally in a Triton Ralliart. They also had a driver take 5th place. They also have a Outlander Ralliart coming soon. I hope we one day see them back to the way they were but at least winning the Asia Cross Country showed us they still have a love for motorsport and even beter they have what it takes to come back in motorsport. Would love to see them back in Dakar

By the way, I'm still driving Mirage. It's a beast of an eco car. Mainly used in the city but on a couple of occasions, I took them on road trips as far as from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and back (roughly 1,400 km or 870 miles). This year is the eleventh anniversary with a millage approaching 250,000 km. Never has a major breakdown once. A couple of minor road accidents now and then but overall, an absolute unit of a so-called small car.

It's still very much in competing in the market in Asia and Europe. I lived in the UK for almost a decade and Mitsubishi cars are as commonly seen as any European or other Japanese brands. Likewise in Asia where I live now, Mitsubishi is still dominating the pickup truck market and to a lesser extent, the Mid-size SUV with its Pajero Sport still being a household name in Southeast Asia, China, and Japan.

A typical American point of view. The Eclipse was only a known quantity it North America, the reason for Mitsubishi not making another coupe is the fact they don't sell in large enough numbers. Look at the Toyota/Subaru/BMW tie-ups. For companies as large these they have to do a joint venture to make these cars remotely viable. Look at the original Eclipse, how many companies made a version? As for the Evo, it's basis is a Lancer which is in a dying segment, are Mitsubishi going to plow tonnes of resources into a 3 box saloon or into the much more lucrative crossover market? Mitsubishi have a very large presence in the South East Asia markets, this is why Nissan have a stake in the company.

The EVO isn't the best thing that came out of Mitsubishi. The Pajero is. Legendary, iconic SUV. Nothing symbolizes Mitsubishi Motor's more than the Pajero. They focus on SUVs because they make great SUVs. Not to mention the Triton is one hell of an off-road pickup too. The Delica van is a legend in Japan. Mitsubishi Motor's sales have been trending upwards globally because they are now focusing on the global south, although at the detriment of their American markets. They are on the trajectory of another car maker that is deemphasizing the US market for growing Asian, African, Middle East and Latin American markets where vehicles are focused on toughness and reliability. By the way, screw the JDM mindset, that's not really what the reality of the Japanese car industry and market is all about.

One thing people commonly say is that most of Mitsubishi's revenue does not come from cars, but the fact that they don't get most of their revenue from cars is EXACTLY what makes it so perplexing. They don't need to cater to the family car market at all, they can literally just make Evos and it wouldn't hurt them financially at all in the wider scope of things.

Cars o believe only accounted for 30% of the profits of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The thing is I’m all about a car company having a complete line up I.e sedan family vehicles ,SUV , Van , light load truck and of course a flagship or sports car or cars. Looks at Toyota and Chevy they definitely got it right but emphasis on Toyota. They have a big range of vehicles. But hey this their SUV’s can actually tow!!! I have a EVO X and 3000gt. The wife and we’re looking at an SUV but one that can tow from Mitsubishi and currently there are none!!! Reason? Because we already have passenger vehicles another SUV wouldn’t make sense without using it other than hauling people. Cars are tools for practicality and tools for emotions and tools to learn. So yes Mitsubishi has the layout but choose not to do well. Even a sporty hybrid is welcomed.

They're the dad with the minivan that used to be really cool. They now work a low-end 9-5 with barely any savings at the end of the pay cycle, sometimes even going negative where they have to use some of their savings to pay the bills. They used to kick royal butt on the track, on the regular too, now they stress themselves over the morning and evening commutes. It is a very slow death as mediocrity completely envelopes them, but you can't help but root for them. You remember the good times and wish for more, but you doubt they'll ever have a good year again.

They declined because the dealership wouldn’t budge unless they signed a ten year lease, the dealership wouldn’t let them buy the car outright. Plus, the whole dealership experience was “miserable” as they tell me (it was many years ago and the manger was apparently given the boot shortly thereafter Ironically, they went and bought a Pathfinder after that. Ive been there since day 1. Mitsubishi will only be successfu at selling cars by sticking to their old old ways. Not going to get in to it but long story short, Making cars only accounts for like 5 % Of their income. Mirsubishi is focused on the energy industry. Heavy oil and electrical. Thats their bread and butter.
