What happened to Outdoor Voices?! - The Brand That Took on Nike & Lululemon falls again.

If you want to grow in Sports Marketing, it's important to understand the world of athleisure quickly closing in. With brands like SKIMS, Lululemon and Alo Yoga entering sports, and traditional brands like Nike and adidas trying to sell more athleisure...we're headed for a collision course.
Studying the rise & fall of the atleisure darlings can help us learn about the power of Branding, Differentiation, Serving a Specific Consumer Market...and the painful lessons of growth.
Outdoor Voices got acquired AGAIN last week. It's been an ugly road for them. They were once the darling of the athleisure world and had the big brands like Nike and Lululemon trying to chase their style.
Now? Their charasmatic founder ,Ty Haney, has moved on after she was pushed out of the company in 2020 and there's been fallout ever since.
There have been multiple rounds of layoffs, stores closing, and now Consortium Partners is acquiring them.
It's a bizarre place.
Marketing Insights from the world of Athleisure and Sports.

This is a great breakdown Jordan! Thanks for sharing. I am a sports business professional venturing into the sponsorship & marketing in a very immature sports market - India. Over the last few years, we've had a burst of homegrown athleisure brands serving the consumers and I can clearly demarcate them according to your graph to better understand their positioning. Found your channel through Oren. Really enjoyed this video and derived value. My only ☝️ piece of feedback, is I would love to hear more of your personal opinion at the end to conclude the video. It felt like it ended abruptly. Otherwise, great content.

This is such good content - Thank you. I know your specialty is sports marketing, but are you able to do any basic videos on intro to marketing for someone who wants to learn more about marketing in general? Keep up the good work. Thanks!

I have a bunch of product from OV (including the exercise dress, ofc). They also used to lean into local community - hiring city-specific managers to put on events like yoga nights and group jogs. Pushing Ty out was a terrible look/signal to a female-heavy customer base, well before they downgraded material quality and closed stores. The board never truly understood the power of the brand & following she built. That was the beginning of the end 😢 Seems like Vuori stepped in to fill part of the loungewear & casual movement niche…? Great video, thanks Jordan!

they did great community work, for sure! Oddly enough, I don't see anyone filling their FUN/Sporty space, but there's so many athleisure brands for general casual movement stuff! Thanks for tuning in!

Love this! I have their iconic tote bag and blue “doing things” hat. I’m always looking on Poshmark for the original collection pieces. I remember in college listening to Ty on podcasts. I wanted to join the company so badly, but then I read crazy stories on Glassdoor about their company culture.

Loving the new content recently! Very interested in learning about how you built your marketing portfolio in the past to obtain former roles. I’m actually a young ex-Nike brand marketer as of recently and would love to hear what you have to say regarding this as I’m back on the job search. Let me know if you’d be open to briefly reviewing mine too!🙌🏾🙌🏾

Do you have any advice for a soon-to-be business owner entering this market? I want my brand to be fun and affordable. My brand will be sensory-friendly for all ages and sizes, solving issues for people with sensitive skin, hives, and sensitivity to seams. We plan to use fabrics like bamboo, lyocell, and modal to ensure comfort and quality. Any tips or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
