Saudi Arabian Airlines (SAUDIA) has always been kind of a mysterious airline to the west and that’s exactly why I found it interesting. It is a major airline in the Middle East, with 150 airplanes, but historically their focus is to serve their customer inside Saudi Arabia.
I recently flew on a Saudia B787 Dreamliner from Dubai to Jeddah. The largest country in the Middle East has opened their doors to visitors again. Let’s find out from my journey what’s changed in SAUDIA during the pandemic.
During my visit, I was driven for the first time by a Saudi lady. I visited the SAUDIA crew training centre and saw a new batch of Saudi National female cabin crew being trained. A couple of years ago it would’ve been impossible to see a Saudi female driving or serving as a flight attendant.
I interviewed Saudia's CEO, Captain Ibrahim Koshy. He mentioned a lot of things are changing inside the 75-year-old airline, with goals to transport 100 million tourists to Saudi Arabia with vision 2030. The airline is at a turning point. In the next 5-10 years it will be interesting to see how Saudia develops itself on the global aviation footprint.

I had wonderful experience with these people during my last journey to Jeddah. Pilots and cabin crews were amazing. The way they took off the flight and the way they landed it was so smooth. Cabin crews were really friendly. I worked in Saudi Arabia during the Haj season as a medical officer for pilgrims from India. It was really amazing. The way they handled the crowd was beyond explanation. The way they are protecting both haram mosques was even more beyond explanation. Great. Love them.

Saudi Arabian Airlines has always been a premier airline. They were one of the largest and most advanced fleets in the 80s and 90s and still are today. Even short haul flights offered great service, unlike many airlines now. I flew Saudia extensively in the 90s and most recently in 2005, still going strong and still one of my favourite airlines.

Saudia has been a rock solid airline since the 1980s at least, when I first began flying it on 747SPs and Tri-Stars. Modern fleets, very high level of maintenance, great food, etc. What it hasn’t done is chase international connection passengers like Emirates (through Dubai) and Qatar (through Doha). Rather, Saudia has flown passengers to and from the Kingdom (an impossible model for the other ME carriers whose bases lack population). Very good airline without unnecessary glitz - and non-stops from LA to Jeddah, my second home and favorite Saudi city.

@pacmanc8103
@pacmanc8103 2 жыл бұрын
@@gla5470 They didn’t attract Western tourists because historically tourist visas were not available, not because they don’t serve alcohol. Most travelers on the other ME carriers aren’t flying to those places (Doha and even Dubai), but rather, transferring at their hubs for onward destinations. That is a very shaky business model for national airlines of countries without real destinations internally.

One of the crew said "the prayer place cannot be used for praying now because of CORONA" I don't know how does that make sense that COVID is effecting people from praying at the place and not effecting the use of toilets. There are more risks in contracting the virus in toilets or waiting outside to use the toilets than offer your prayer in the place designated for prayer. Nothing against people using toilets its just that I could not get a reasonable answer for stopping people from using the prayer place to pray which normally takes no more than 3 minutes. COVID-19 seems to be very pious as it mostly effects where people are worshiping.

I am currently based in Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 right now and I must say the Kingdom has really flown a long way in terms of the progressive changes as they open the country for the world in the fruitful name of tourism. Saudis by nature are polite and respectful. You treat them right and most definitely they will all treat you well a thousand fold. Saudis have also a deeper sense of humor. Indeed Saudia is a promising country that has full of potentials in terms of history, culture, it's tourist attractions and of course, its people... Mabrook!

I’ve read things about mistreatment of women in not only Saudi Arabia, but in quite a few Middle East countries and unnecessary abuse towards people when they make a mistake that upsets the justice system. Has it been a very big problem for a long time? When did things start to the round? Are all those nasty things still being done today?
@pacmanc8103
@pacmanc8103 2 жыл бұрын
@@magnustan841 I would question your premise - in fact, the question reads like ‘has he stopped beating his wife yet?’. Just look what you wrote - ‘has it been a very big problem for a long time?’. What do you expect as an answer? Yes? No? The roles of both men and women are changing in the Middle East as they are throughout the world. So your question should really be ‘are the changes in Saudi becoming more like what I AM familiar/comfortable with?’ Interesting and predictable, but from a very uninformed lens - you are aware that their traditional culture has existed for thousands of years, right?

When I work in Saudi Arabia we call Sadia apple juice Airways. One of the major issues with no booze on board therefore we would apply other flights in and out we could relax and have a drink on the way In-N-Out

Alcohol should be banned on every airline. We dont need unruly drunk passengers or crew acting out mid air.

My father Bob Kay was the 5th pilot hired by Saudia in 1947 just as they were starting the airline. DC-3's / 6's and the Bristol Freighter. Joe Grant, the Kings personal pilot hired dad. Dad stayed and flew for the King for 10 years, then left and went to Iran Air. My dad loved Saudia!!!

Honestly, I really don't know how to feel about this as woman. Despite all stellar compliments , when I watch this video I see mostly man. I see only men in the airport. There are a lot of promises about how women will be integrated in to airline but I still see mostly men everywhere. Are they flying men only as well? I'm thinking how would I feel if I'd decide to fly with them as female?

excellent video, thank you! i would love to return to ksa, was in dhahran 1996-98. one thing we will sadly never see again at a u.s. air carrier: a senior pilot who is ceo. my only suggestion to saudia: please introduce a premium economy class. cheers!

thanks for replying. we used to have aviation folks run airlines and car folks run motor vehicle makers, sadly no more. i hope that you do more followup videos on ksa in the coming days. may i kindly suggest that your videos include more details on all classes’ menu and ife choices. im itching to travel again soon. regards!

@@jtns2845 Could you elaborate why it is that car people no longer run motor companies and pilots no longer run airlines in the US? What sort of people are these establishments looking for as leaders nowadays?

I like the history of the airline going back to the pioneering days of airstrips in the desert and piston engined planes. And that was a good idea to showcase the old DC3 propeller at the head office. Now, coming back to the airline today, I would say that they should be very strategic on how they spend their capitol in navigating the airline to a better future, especially when it comes to major hardware purchases. Avoid mistakes like how Emirates and Singapore Airlines did into buying large numbers of A380's only shortly thereafter for Airbus to discontinue the type. What the skys will be like post Covid we can only guess, maybe a gradual return to normalcy, and airlines like Saudi, Emirates and Qatar are well poised due to their central location in the glabal east,west and north, south connectivity points. Wish Saudi Airlines the best.
