I’m around the same age as Tabitha, I was in 7th grade in 2003 as well, and I don’t know if this was specific the the county I live in or because I went to private school, but every year we had a day that was all about safety/not talking to strangers/ what to do if someone tries to take you. A local police officer would come and we would watch videos as well. I still remember that stuff so vividly...like how you can access a tail light if you are put into a trunk, break the tail light and stick your hand through to try to get attention...

So true. Along with putting an already-suffering family through even more hell, these “pranks” (which honestly seems like too innocent of a word here) can also seriously hamper the investigation. False info sends police on wild goose chases, which ends up costing precious time/resources that should go toward investigating REAL leads.

I hate to break it to you but your kid's school is f*cking up big time because those calls are supposed to occur by like 5pm at the absolute latest. When I would skip class I would simply catch the call because my mom didn't get home until a few hours after I got home. Often the call was already on my answering machine when I got home and I don't think it ever once came in later than 4: 30. The only times it was even that late is when I attended most of the day but skipped one of my classes after lunch. If I didn't show up at all or missed a class any time in the first half of the day that call was in by 1:00 without fail and my middle school and high school each had over 2,500 students to keep track of. Your kid's school is LAZY.

A detailed memory is not indicative of an accurate memory. There are very many things that can influence or taint a person's memory and even create false memories - even very quickly/when asking for a recent memory. It's why eye witness testimony doesn't hold as much weight as some would expect. There's a lot of really cool (but inconvenient for crime) research about it in the recent years.

I went to middle school - high school through the early 2000s in Arlington, Tx. I lived on the same block & went to the same school, same grade as Amber Haggerman. Stranger danger was our existence as students and a community. But it’s so important to remember that every school has a varying policy, attendance system, budget for said systems, and teachers have bad days / lives too. I had teachers show up to my house to make sure I was okay and fed because they knew my parents were addicts. Those same people had families, stresses, needs, and professional obligations & still showed back up to work the next day.

@@tgs5725 That's not how that works bud... Whenever a child goes missing they always look at places the child could have went to voluntarily, regardless of circumstance. That's usually the first thing that's done unless there's hard evidence to suggest an abduction occurred. Actual runaways aren't going to be harmed by police departments doing their jobs and investigating all angles from the beginning of a missing person case. Assuming that someone is a runaway (especially when there's no evidence to suggest that someone has even run away!) is just the police being lazy and not wanting to do what they are being paid to do.

No. It’s not the law that should change, it’s the police departments. Just because you and I may have good intentions wanting to implement such laws, it ends up being manipulated and used in completely different ways and circumstances than was intended. When a child goes missing and the police officers actually do their job and follow up on the case by wanting to search every house, they go door to door and ask each homeowner to do so. Those who say no are further looked into and determine whether or not they should get a warrant. That law for this certain situation is written well.

@@loko7914 thank you! I completely understand the need to do as much as is humanly possible to find a missing child, and the frustration and anger that the public experience when it's been so long with no answers. however, we just can't set that precedent. imagine what could come next if the police were allowed to go into anyone's house within an x mile radius of a missing person. I completely agree that it would inevitably be used in a nefarious way that completely goes against the spirit of the reason it was put into place to begin with. that would be the slipperiest slope and I would absolutely not want to live in a place where, bc a child went missing 1, 5, 10??? miles away, the police are legally allowed to just bust in EVERYONE'S house within that area. that would be terrifying.

The reason is because judges who rule on these cases can be soft on sex offenders and predators when they are released in the city the prison is in. My school (only the HS that I can recall tho) didn’t call parents when children missed especially if it was regular. But in the lower grades I do believe they called. But in some circumstances they did call, like a girl who was very ill that I went to school with when I was a sophomore they called her mom to tell her she didn’t show up one day, which happened to be the day her mom found her dead. She committed suicide. I think it just depends.

I’ve noticed that some schools don’t have a set time when they call. My little sisters school will sometimes call in the morning a few hours after the first bell, multiple times throughout the day after every missed period, or sometimes they won’t call until 5 or 6 at night. There’s no consistency which is really scary in cases like this

when I was in middle school, if you missed a day, they never called. I’m guessing they just assume that the child is sick or is doing something more important (example: a funeral) but I did miss school a lot during that time so I don’t blame them, but if a child that never misses doesn’t come to school, they should call just in case because if Tabithas school called her parents she may have been found.

i never understood how labeling a child as a ‘runaway’ means that it’s ok for police to not put as much effort into the case. even if they believed she ran away, this is still a very young child in the streets who hasn’t been seen or heard from for weeks and weeks, they know she has no money, shelter, or vehicle. she is obviously still in danger, regardless of wether she left by her own accord or not. such a shame, i hope this girl comes home someday.

Also, even if the child has run away, they're still a child! Being on out alone leaves young girls and boys open to human trafficking, kidnapping, sexual assault, and other violence. Runaway or not - children still need to be searched for and found.

I've actually done some research about this. I never realized how many resources the term "runaway" also strips away from a case. In Houston and Arizona (the areas I did my research on), classifying them as runaways means they don't place them in the system for all LE departments to be aware they are missing. One of the authors said in Arizona they are struggling to figure out, especially in foster situations, how many children are meeting foul play (even trafficking) via homes and parents not reporting them properly. =(

@jessm7482
@jessm7482 6 жыл бұрын
Mara Exanimis u are truly heartless lol. First u say they want attention, then u say no one has time to help them when there’s more serious cases like abduction and then you said u can’t help people that don’t want to be helped. Can u not hear the constant contradictions? Majority of run away kids are from abusive homes, they don’t want attention, they want the exact opposite. To disappear to some sort of safe haven. It’s not that they don’t want to be helped, it’s that every time they’ve tried to get help, no one does anything! What other option would u have as a kid?! Being a kid in a situation like that doesn’t call for logic and rationality but moreso desperation. Plus the majority of “runaways” aren’t actually runaways and can’t be proved. Time and time again police have considered teenage girls run aways only to find out years later they were victims of heinous crimes like abduction/sexual assaualts and murders. Police just love throwing the label run away onto a case when they have no leads so it takes the pressure off of them. Less than half officially noted runaways are runaways. The kids that do runaway for attention are generally much younger than young adults, think preteen. Young adult runaways are mostly from dysfunctional homes riddled with substance issues/abuse/neglect etc and thus they seek out other methods to get attention and love (from strangers/chat rooms/friends etc) and they run away to escape; the complete opposite of wanting attention and the polar opposite of “don’t want to be helped”. Majority of abduction cases are first labeled runaways until a new lead so you trying to dismiss runaways as less important than “real” crimes like abduction (which most of them are anyway) is truly sick. U should be ashamed.

That's absurd and the police would dismiss that immediately. She wasn't stupid or impulsive according to anything anybody in her life has said. She wouldn't run away from a family that she loved to follow her best friend to Vegas. She was a child. What would she have been planning to do when she got there? The move was planned before she disappeared and happened afterwards, so what could you possibly find odd about it?? Was the family supposed to just not move because Tabitha was missing when they had probably already sold their house and everything? The alleged sighting in Vegas means nothing when you take in to account the fact that she was supposedly spotted all over the rest of the country as well. If I remember right there were also reports of possible sightings in the UK, Mexico and Australia. Probably other places too. I can understand maybe finding it odd as a child but not now that you are an adult. There's literally nothing suspicious about it.

@Tabs530

I think the idea is there isn’t any information to include with the Amber Alert? Not saying we shouldn’t alert folks with at least a photo and name. But I think the idea is amber alerts typically tell you to look out for a girl wearing “a red shirt” who was last seen getting into a “green car”. I’m sure the idea is that getting details out helps them track them. Without details it’s hard to say what it brings. And I know sometimes there is concern that alerting an offender that police and folks are on high alert could cause them to act rash and harm the child. So maybe without details they are just deciding the risk doesn’t outweigh the possibility it would help? Not saying it’s not valid just trying to consider why they don’t use them for every situation.

Can someone tell me why possible runaways aren't taken seriously?? If children run away they're still at risk, some might think more so than a typical abduction. Runaways are more likely to go with strangers if they honestly believe the individual won't harm them and will help them get to the place they want to go. They definitely need to fix that whole situation. If a child disappears *period* it should be handled with urgency and importance. Also I feel as though enough shady activity has surrounded chat rooms for some type of action to be taken. There should be laws requiring a users identity to be confirmed just in case something happens they'll know the real identity behind the online usernames.

Sadly I dont think Tabitha will have a happy ending like Jaycee and Elizabeth and Michelle Gina and Amanda etc.. But I hope she's still out there and will be brought home soon. Poor sweet girl. Since they go to church together she might have trusted them even more so if she knew they had a child of their own. Just a theory I haven't heard mentioned yet.

@Joan Gifford A very important, helpful comment you make, which can save many from so much heartbreak. Where there are children, there paedophiles place their focus. If I am ever blessed with a wife and children, I will not be allowing my kids under the unsupervised authority of anyone, whether it be a youth group, scouts, guides, etc. Today is more perilous than ever due too the harness of sexual decency and self control being loosened and thrown away and British society is now allowed, sanctioned by government, to fulfil their perversion and lust in various wicked ways. Depravity is rife. Your comments seem to me an important reminder to those watching these videos.

My other thought is that with the two boys who have stated they saw her getting into a car: one thought the car was red and one thought it was green? you mentioned that a suspect the police followed up on had a green AND a red car? Is it possible that he was driving one of those cars that day, but one of the boys has previously seen him driving the other car, (and as is often in the case of eyewitness accounts) simply mixed up which car he saw that day??

Kidnapping is so so common people don’t think it can happen as easily as it does. I live in a close knit town in Ireland and when I was about 6 or 7 in my cousins estate one summer a car of 2 men pulled up and asked me and her where we bought our water guns and I told them which they replied “can the two of yous get in and show us?” My cousin was a year younger and went to get into the car before I grabbed her and ran into her house. That wasn’t ever gonna end up as harmless as it sounded and so scary to think if she was alone would she have just gone with them and what could’ve happened.

Shauna Bellow, I had a similar experience when I too was 7 maybe 8. I was supposed to be riding my bike to my bestfriend at the times house. Either the night before or in the morning, my dad was supposed to add air to my tires or tire, I can't remember. He was working really long, hard days at the time and I think he simply forgot. I went anyways and at some point I had to get off and walk with my bike because one of them was flat. I was about half way to her house when a man in a smaller, boxy shaped car had slowly driven by me and he turned around and drove by me 2 more times while really looking at me. After the third time he pulled up next to me and he told me he was going to a dentist appointment and he couldn't find the office and did I know where it was and could I possibly help him look. I grew up in the 80s where there was the big stranger danger campaign. Not to mention you know how parents are they definitely drill into you not to talk to strangers and never get into a stranger's vehicle. So I don't remember exactly what I said other than not knowing who his dentist was and not helping him find it. I started to run with the bike and he took off the opposite way with his car. I do remember being scared and looking back over my shoulder. I must have more scared then I remember being as passerbyers clearly saw that I was panicked and running from something. we didn't really have cell phones back then. I think that might have been around the time where cell phones were first introduced and if you had one, they were huge and came in a bag that you had to carry around with you. Anyways some concerned passerbyer apparently called the cops once they got home and reported it. a cop came and talked to me and actually took me to my friends house. my friends mom and the cop wanted to call my parents so they both showed up. I don't know how much later it was because their shop was about a half hour from home. I remember my dad was so angry and upset with himself for forgetting to put air in my tires. At the time I knew that it was a scary situation but it was until I got a little older and was able to remember that it happened and look back at it that I realized that man was trying to kidnap me and who knows what would have happened if I had gotten in that car.

I completely agree, Danelle. This girl was taken by a person she knew (or thought she knew), or in that heavy residential area at peak time for going to work/walking the dog/going to school, someone would have seen or heard something. You also don't walk almost all the way to school, if you're planning on running away. I also agree with you about the chat room, and I think the TDT - N - MTL on the scrap of paper is the biggest clue they have. Maybe MTL was someone she met in there, or perhaps the 'N' was the person's name, and the MTL was part of a number plate? Or an abbreviation for a place? And 'Juan' ... unless he's dead, I think he's a prime suspect. Being dead is the only excuse I can think of for him not coming forward. Although you would think *someone* would recognise him, whether he's dead or alive. Also odd that the police have a first name and a photograph, but no other details. Very sketchy. Lastly ... if I ever go missing, I really hope you cover my disappearance,. You speak about these situations with such empathy and integrity, and my guess is it's only a matter of time before one of your videos leads directly to a case being solved.

Something about Juan's cars set off an alarm for me. What I'm wondering is if maybe he approached her with one car and she didn't get in or he actually drove her to school - thus creating one of the sightings - and on a separate day - the day she was abducted - he used a different car and didn't take her to school. Idk he just freaks me out.

Thanks for sharing this case Danelle! I live in Nashville now, but I’ve only been here since 2012 so I’ve never heard about this case. From what I hear, East Nashville was a pretty rough place back then, and still is in some parts. So heartbreaking that her family still keeps her poster up on their house. And it’s so frustrating that the police seem to have a lot of sources that seem to suggest the same situations of how she was taken and where she might be now, but they still aren’t able to confirm anything. I hope there is closure for the family someday!

As someone born and raised in East Nashville, I wanted to thank you for covering Tabitha's case. But I must tell you, the claim that the cops interviewed the neighbors in an area of 2 square miles around her house when she disappeared is now known to be a lie. I grew up on 13th, just a couple of streets over and down from where she met the bus. My mom lived there until 2007. Neither she nor any neighbor she asked were interviewed for over a month, by which details would naturally be fuzzy.

I can't say every child thinks the same. I tried to run away at 14 and it was a instant decision due to a disagreement we'll say with my parents. I just took off walking without anything, didn't even bother going back inside to get anything and I had about $200 saved up but didn't get it. I just want to escape. Not every time will a child take things with them. But she had no reason to runaway and the Amber alert is sent out with less information.

There was once upon a time as an aid to help find missing children, their image would be placed on the side of milk cartons, I remember a news report from that era, a mother did not think her offspring would be found or even searched for. Her reasoning, her child would not be considered very attractive. Every time a missing person’s story is reported on the news, just as it was yesterday, I keep thinking she was correct, and her suspicions seem to still be right all these many years later…

Yeah I think most of the time the media only reports on things that attractive people involved in including missing people, really anything for that matter. And before I forget you must indeed be white and attractive or just white and it probably helps if you have 💰 money. Sad part is you can be black and attractive and I never see any missing media reports on tv about black people. Really I can only rhink of one maybe 2 teenage girls in 20+ year that was black that the media had coverage on, but not very much coverage maybe one or 2 briefly missing picture and report maybe mention the name. Hispanic a few I've seen but again not that many. Asian people nothing I've seen in the media that I can think of. So very disturbing in my opinion.
