The Crow series is a prime example of the sad but true happening of diminishing returns. While these are not 100% horror, they are often categorized as so and do contain a certain amount of horror elements. So if horror-adjacent is an issue, you've been warned. When it comes to the third entry in the series, well, it's not exactly beloved. The Crow: Salvation didn't do well upon release, didn't exactly do well financially, and it's not beloved by fans. Yet, something is interesting here, and it may be a lesson about filmmaking, timing, and taking risks.

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

Mabius is kinda how i imagined Skarsgård would look pre photo reveals. I imagined the shortish hair (Bill’s regular), the light make up (not using the burns, but just a more subdued look), very mild martial arts usage, but man was i wrong

@IkeamarcosGarnado-gd7xi it really doesn't feel like a crow story to me... even though it's based on the original crow. Even more so because of that. The other films at least gave the environment an ethereal feel with the world. The Reboot feels like every action film since John Wick. I'm sure it'll have amazing action but it doesn't feel like a crow film to me.

@@RedSplinter36 personally i think the majority of action scenes from the trailer are just from the final chapter it looks like. some opera house. they definitley got the gore right if they took inspiration from the comic xD. salvation was ok. it just looked cheap at times. one scene i never get out of my head is how his hair cut changes in the scene where he jumps off the prison roof lol but i didnt mind the overall movie. atleast they didnt repeat "kill the bird to sever his link to the afterlife" a third time in this one.

3 hours? I doubt it would need to be that long. I just wish Tim Pope wasn't so terminally turned off from his film because, as an artist, I'd personally love a chance to right a creative wrong and to present my vision as intended. CoA would just need the right editing finesse. 3 hours is too long. Kinda like how I wish Fincher was able to go back to the assembly cut of Alien 3 and give a cut that resembles his vision the most, despite the fact that he was never given the opportunity to make the film he wanted. Close to spot on is better than being way off imo.

The first Crow movie had something that very few films get. The aura of one lost too soon that not only is the plot, but the tragedy behind the making. I was a fan of Bruce Lee as a kid, motivated me to learn martial arts and being able to see in my then current life as his son followed in his footsteps was like a witnessing rebirth. Sadly we lost Brandon before he could find himself however he did leave us with an amazing story that gave him the opportunity to see more of his personality rather than just the flashing of his fists and feet. To this day any time I watch The Crow in full or in part, I always get the exact same feeling in my heart that I can only describe as a longing for what his character had with Shelly that was strong enough to allow fate to give him the chance to serve justice for the wrong performed against them.

I like the visual of the protagonist in this movie, it's very authentic. I like the short hair, the scars instead of makeup and the prison uniform, especially the overall getting more and more messed and dirty in a way that reminds to the original. Too bad they tried to play safe with the plot... at least the second movie went with the father/son theme.

I actually enjoy The Crow: Salvation. Its not perfect, but there are a few gems within the movie. Like when Alex was going after the second cop I love the interaction when the cop, Vincent goes, "You're the guy who killed Dutton." Alex - "Vincent...I want you to think of me as the guy who killed you." Beats the hell out of the interaction in City of Angels, "Do you know how to fight?" "Do you know how to die?"

I actually liked this sequel. Honestly I enjoyed the first 3 flicks. Never bothered with Wicked Prayer, but also never got to watch the TV show Crow Stairway to Heaven (unfortunately). This one is the "least worst of" in the series, but I love the cast of mostly genre/character actors and the changed that were made to tweak it away from being a carbon copy of the original I didn't mind. They fit for the time period for me. You want to watch a Crow movie that you can riff on without looking like a jerk? Check this one out with some friends and potent potables/mind altering substances and have a good time!

I'm so glad you mentioned the soundtrack. I never saw this movie and I won't willingly do so. I may have seen the second one once many years ago. But I love the soundtracks to both of the sequels. There is nothing better than a compilation of b-sides and obscure bands. I like that you all mention the soundtracks in your WTF series it's turned me on to a couple. Maybe you should do a series on soundtracks of movies? Great tunes from terrible movies. (Your can have that title lololol). But from my limited research, music trivia is a bit more locked down than movies, so it would be a hellova b*tch to figure.

This movie has some great moments. I never put it together that Alex was supposed to be 19. I always saw him as young/mid 20s. There are some absolute cringe moments, but most could have been corrected with some decent editing. There are quite a few scenes that could be eliminated entirely that would greatly improve the film. I give it a solid second place in the franchise, as of today.

I remeber seeing this on the rack at Hastings and thinking "They made another Crow movie? Hey Kirsten Dunst is on here cool". Checked it out and I dug it. I liked how different it was and it was a good twist on "The innocent boyfriend convicted of her murder sentenced to death", "The girlfriend knew something about dirty cops so they killed her and pin it on the boyfriend" and that the makeup was scarring from the electric death mask he had to wear. I liked it because it was different, but had the spirit of the first two movies. Probably the quality and budget of the movie kind of hurt it as well since it resembled a "Straight to DVD" quality to it. If they had a bigger budget, probably could've looked better... but just my two cents. I can say this is MILES better than Edward Furlong's Version. Saw it at a buddy's place for 10 minutes and I thought it was a joke. Like a parody of "The Crow" movie. Especially him using a sharpie as the makeup... whaaaa? lol

It’s both ironic and sad that no matter how a sequel turns out for The Crow it’ll get blasted for various reasons (City of Angels has flaws but, there’s a lot of heart and soul within that sequel but, the studio botched it by interfering!) The Crow Stairway to Heaven should not work but, for a syndicated tv adaptation it’s actually really strong if you view it through a alternative time line point of view… The Crow Salvation was made strictly as a tax shelter i don’t remember seeing any Promotional material regarding it maybe a imdb story about it (After watching this video i’m very curious about checking it out (It has a very impressive who-who’s working actors in it) it’s sad nobody tried to adapt The Crow: Flesh & Blood into a film (That is a very underrated graphic novel that would make a awesome live action film…

“Salvation” was pretty awesome! The Edward Furlong one was horrible.

When people make sequels, one of the main element they forget is crafting an iconic look. Brandon Lee, with the make up and outfit looks so bad ass. It’s really iconic. Salvation makes the crow look the opposite. The main characters look is awful. Visuals are a huge part of the first crow. Can’t shy away from that.

Wow the fact it has Walton Goggins and Kirsten Dunst in it kinda blows my mind.

When Brandon left us the magic of The Crow went with him. 😥 Everything else is just beating the same storyline over and over again.

quick fact: it released to selected theaters in october 1999, but was released direct to video straight after that in january 2000

The movie itself had potential, but it needed polishing, which you can tell they didn't bother to do and sent it packing "as is" to DTV. I remember picking up the soundtrack a whole year before it finally premiered on video. It was initially supposed to go to theaters. Had the filmmakers been given the chance to do some post-production tinkering and polishing, it would have presented a more theatrical film. Due to poor test screenings, Miramax closed their pocket books and nixed any attempt to fix the film. Not surprising since Weinstein(yes, that guy) hates genre films and was infamous for screwing many productions, including The Crow: City of Angels.

The Crow? There will only ever be the one... Eric Draven, as portrayed by the late Brandon Lee. Every imitation after that is only just that, an imitation.

I actually really liked this one. I was eagerly waiting for it to show in theaters. It was changed just enough to not be too much of a cardboard copy. I am really curious about the Rob Zombie version.

Before I start this, I'm hoping it's not going to be too harsh. I think this is a decent flick that does its own things with The Crow, since one of the complaints of City of Angels were about things feeling too much like the first (even though it wasn't really, other than the general appearance of the hero). The cast are solid actors all around, if not the greatest talents, the soundtrack is pretty damn good, and again, it has some fun and unique scenes that stand on their own.

I remember watching much music or mtv in 99 and they would show a comercial for the crow salvation soundtrack. I was hoping to see it at the theaters but it never came out. It wasnt until 2001 i was finaly able to see it when i found the trilogy box set of the crow. It was the very first dvds I owned. I had to watch it on a desktop since i didnt own a stand alone dvd player yet. The movie isnt that great but it has its moments.

Though I do like this movie one issue I had was Alex kept talking about the scar the killer had. I never got how his own Daughter never knew her Father had that scar.

I forgot this exists, I haven't found it to bad when I saw it but judging the lack of trace it left in my memory it was one the level of blant tv movie. I have a bitbof respect to City of Angels for trying to do something different, even if it didn't really worked and ad least I remember bits of it. This one is a blank space.

The Crow:Salvation wasn’t a bad movies though not exactly like the previous sequel The Crow:City of Angels. The Crow was an iconic film despite the fact that Brandon Lee died an untimely death during production due to a stunt gone wrong. The Crow:Wicked Prayer was the worst
