Lpg seemed to lose its appeal at one point when it’s price was similar to other fuels. But now that petrol and diesel is so dear, suddenly the lpi falcon would sell like hot cakes if it were still around. Maybe that’s why they didn’t sell as many as it seems they should’ve. Cheers for the content mate haven’t missed one for over a year !

I dunno about other states but in WA, LPG stations are getting fewer and further between. Range anxiety is the main issue. I think LPG started to lose its appeal when the hybrid Camry became mainstream and most taxi operators chose them over LPG.

@@jigglypuff2562 No , when petrol was $1.10 gas was 65c & then petrol $1.50 gas still 65c . Lpg is around 1/3 less efficient than petrol economy wise , so the math then becomes easy , as long as petrol is more than 1/3 more , your winning . On average over 17 years of owning a dedicated lpg AU wagon , running lpg has saved us on average between $4 & $7 per hundred Kay’s , so don’t try & tell us that lpg is not worth it long term , saving between 4 & 7 grand every hundred thousand Kay’s is not chicken feed & that saving can then be said to have paid for all maintenance & servicing of our car & because we do a lot of it ourselves that’s even better again . Still need a car with heaps of room ( wagon can fit 11’ fishing rod inside ) can tow a couple of tonne easy & is comfortable on long trips . Only downside is shell pulled all lpg bowsers Australia wide & the servos that still sell it tend to run dry during the week , so range anxiety does come into it , with the wagons twin tanks you get around 90 litres but in sedans that is reduced to approx 60 ? I believe , so some long trips may need to be planned or just fill up more often where available.

@@rods6405 , in the EcoLPI “Barra” powered Falcons, the joint dual LPG tanks are outside the cabin, under a flat boot floor. There’s only a little less boot space compared with the petrol fuelled Falcons. However, normally these cars weren’t equipped with a spare wheel & tyre. There was a compact tyre inflating & sealing pump neatly fitted under a cover in the boot. I believe a boot space consuming “space-saver” spare wheel & tyre, or full-sized tyre & standard alloy wheel option were available too. The LPG tank system couldn’t be made to fit under the Territory unfortunately. 🚙

Hi Ross. Great review/overview of the FG MK2 XR6 EcoLPI. I have a 2013 version here in Perth and has been a pretty good car. A few issues I have found here in Perth for such cars are (may not apply to eastern states): * Yes stations for LPG are less and less every day, especially in the country areas. If you look at fuel watch you can't comfortably drive from Perth to Kalgoorlie with adequate LPG stops along the way. * While yes electric cars you eventually need to replace batteries, for LPG cars you are required to get the LPG tank tested very 10 years. Mine will be due next year and will likely cost about $1000-$1200. * While the Fords dealers in Perth will be happy to do general servicing of your LPG Ford, they will NOT TOUCH ANY of the LPG side of the car. Which means there is also NO support by Ford to get your tank testing done by them. I emailed directly to Ford Aus with no answer (other than please call us). I have found one place in Perth that specializes in LPG cars but if anyone can suggest others in Perth or know of any of the Ford dealers that give ANY support, please let me know..

@@RossReviewsauhere in Warrnambool Victoria we have 2 tank testing places one is the dive shop where aquatic divers tanks must be tested, they charge up to about $400.00 the biggest cost is a new valve that they MUST put in. It's a skam because the line lock cuts the gas when you need to work on the converter or the filter although that in ten years may only be half a dozen times the tap might need to be turned off as a precaution. How many taps will be worn out after being turned off 6 or even ten times? Some valves are charged out at $300.00 others can be only 80.00 and with the RRP for the check for rust the total was $150.00. I have an 1986 Toyota HiAce that was first installed with gas in 1992 I've only had it since 2013 and had to have it tested for a change of rego ownership then. I suspect it was the first tank test so now 30 years on its good as new or they won't pass it.

Another very good review! I own an FG Mk II Falcon G6E EcoLPI, and though I used to own BMW 6-series coupes, my G6E EcoLPI is the best car I’ve ever had. By the way, its excellent ZF 6HP26 6-speed automatic transmission is the same model as used in previous BMW 7-series cars, and a few other luxury cars. I believe it’s also stronger than the version of the 6HP that came fitted in the naturally-aspirated petrol “Barra” six powered FG X Falcons. Also, it doesn’t seem like the EcoLPI “Barra” six was available in a G6E after the Mk II. I agree with your sentiments about LPG being an excellent automotive fuel for Australia, and am concerned about its decline in availability … By the way, the EcoLPI’s liquid-phase-injection of LPG is computer controlled (EFI). LPI gives a boost effect, due to latent-heat-of-vaporisation … more air gets into the combustion chambers, which is then compressed more than other versions of the “Barra” six, due to its 12:1 compression-ratio pistons. The EcoLPI does not have direct-injection as mentioned in the video, but port-injection. The EcoLPI is two levels of LPG gas technology above the earlier EGas (green top) “Barra” six. 🚙
@petesmitt
@petesmitt Жыл бұрын
I think the point being made was that LPG is directly injected into the engine, vs the old converter/mixer system, rather than LPG being injected into the cylinder which is the usual meaning of direct injection.
@lyndongordon2518
@lyndongordon2518 Жыл бұрын
Yes, @@petesmitt. However, as at least one other commenter said, the fuel isn’t direct injected (which means into the combustion chambers), it’s port injected (into the intake ports of the cylinder head), like how all other “Barra” sixes came from the factory, except the “green top” EGas variant. It had an LPG carburettor (which is an LPG mixer & throttle-body combination). The electronic-fuel-injectors on the EcoLPI engine aren’t the same as for the petrol fuelled variants though. They are special liquid-phase-injection (LPI) of LPG types. LPI has advantages over gaseous-phase-injection that other manufacturers used. Ford may have been the only manufacturer to sell production cars with LPI of LPG. It’s an excellent system which is cleaner, arguably safer, cheaper to run, and produces higher performance than the naturally-aspirated petrol fuelled variants. 🚙
@petesmitt
@petesmitt Жыл бұрын
@@lyndongordon2518 You missed my point, which is that the reviewer wasn't distinguishing between combustion chamber and intake port injection, when he used the direct injection term; he was just differentiating from the old mixer system. The reason that gaseous-phase-injection is used more than LPI is that it doesn't require an expensive high pressure pump in the tank.

Its not direct injection, its multipoint fuel injection in the fuel rail - so port fuel injection. I agree the emissions would have kept it compliant easier than the petrol version. More things about LPG, I worked for a company that retailed LPG as one of its business units and they had this frustrating attitude that it was a fuel for dirty old taxis, bbqs and furnaces. Kept on calling it a dead end business. BP is looking at retooling the Kwinana oil refinery to produce jet fuel from biodiesel and green hydrogen using a process developed by Honeywell. One of the byproducts of this is propane which is called ‘renewable propane’. SO its possible to have net zero (assuming proper fuel mixture tuning to suppress N2O formation from combustion in air) motoring with LPG or at the very least very low emissions. I don’t agree with the mining argument against EVs though. Many studies show that the overall impact cut off between a conventional car vs an EV is around 80 000km, maybe less or maybe more based upon the source of electricity. WITH all of that said, I do love me some EcoLPI. It’s my favourite engine :)

The LPI system was also developed by Orbital engines in Perth. When the local car industry wound up, that business unit was sold off to Sprintgas and orbital pivoted to designing small military engines (like what goes into a surveillance drone). There is a rumour that the EcoLPI was too powerful and had to be detuned, hence the lower RPM for peak power/torque.

Maybe Ford should have spent their money advertising this direct injection LPG model instead of R&D into the 2L Ecoboost model which was a sales flop. I totally forgot about this model until this review and I'd say alot of people never knew it even existed sadly. Be interesting to see total build numbers 🤔

In Fact when they released the LPI they asked motoring journalists to race a petrol xr6. In both rolling and standing still drags they couldn’t beat the LPI car no matter who drove what car. So it’s noticeably quicker and as someone else here has said retuned to not embarrass Turbo car sales.

LPG is much cleaner for the environment and engines than petrol. So, LPG is easier on engines. Also, due to the latent-heat-of-vaporisation that the EcoLPI “Barra” six takes advantage of, liquid-phase-injection of LPG cools the combustion chambers. Ever since unleaded petrol was introduced, modern engines have been made to tolerate the lack of valve lubricating lead. LPG is a lead-free fuel. 🚙

It is quite a shame that LPG is not as widespread in Canada, rest alone doing a conversion for bi-fuel (gasoline and LPG) with qualified technicians, unless it is for fleet customers. On similar topic, you may also have heard of a Toyota Crown Comfort taxi in Hong Kong livery in Toronto, and yup it is a LPG.

I own an FG Mk II Falcon G6E EcoLPI. Ford rated its “Barra” six as slightly more powerful, and significantly more torquey than the naturally-aspirated petrol “Barra” six. My engine is stock, with a standard exhaust system. Allowing for an estimated 22% loss of power through its (ZF 6HP26, etc.) drivetrain, its dyno’ reading implies 220kW at the flywheel. That’s without any tuning. For comparison, Ford rated the original turbocharged “Barra” sixes at 240kW. LPG always was a higher octane-equivalent rated, and higher performance fuel than petrol. 🚙
@stevek1681
@stevek1681 Жыл бұрын
@@lyndongordon2518 yes but you may find the 240kw figure quoted by Ford for the turbo (of the earlier non FG vintage) is also underated for marketing reasons to avoid 'upstaging' the flagship XR8 model of the same vintage. My non modified xr6 turbo zf auto made just under 220kw which equates to over 260kw at the crank when taking into account similar driveline losses as you've suggested. I am however supremely impressed with Ford's LPI set up on the FG MK2 range not only in power/torque figures but also driveability and $ economy. We have been advocates of LPG since the early 90's. Just for the sake of fair and direct comparison the FG turbo variant of the same vintage as the ecolpi actually makes 270kw at the crank, not 240kw.

I was watching an old video on your channel and it’s the blue fgx with red seats. You said you don’t get the best sound from the barras if you want a good deep sound this is what I have done with the cars I knew I was keeping over 5 years. Get a good set of extractors and find someone that can wrap them properly and neatly with heat bandages. Then find a stainless custom exhaust shop to do a 3,5” up to 500rwhp and 4.0” 500rwhp up to 1000whp and get the 3mm thick stainless I think it is its thicker than the pre made exhausts you can buy and fit yourself. You’ll also have to get hi-flow cat and muffler and have the exhaust mandrel bent and you won’t believe how much throatier it sounds but I wouldn’t do this unless you are going to keep the car. I had a friend that owns a exhaust shop fit this design to my LX torana V8 and everyone kept asking where I got my exhaust done and he got lots of older cars getting their exhaust done by him and then I sold that car. I bought a VS Holden V8 Ute and it had a bit of mods done to engine and decent sound from the exhaust but I got my mate to fit same design exhaust as I’m saying for nice quality sounding exhaust but I told him he had to get a sticker and big enough for people to see on the back window. After everything was done and sticker was put on the window the first time out cruising on the Gold Coast he had 30 cars pull in and asked for the same exhaust I had on my car. He said he couldn’t do the exact same because I had been given some custom made mufflers from race car driver that got them from one of the V8 Supercars. He said it was the funniest when guys in ford V8 would go into his shop and ask if he could get their car to sound the same. He would say firstly you’ll have to sell your ford and buy a Holden V8 and they would say not a chance and he would laugh and say ok I can get yours to sound like this and he would start his falcon and they would say yes that sounds awesome. He would tell them holdens and fords don’t sound the same ever. Back then in the 90’s 2000 it would cost between $2,5k to $3,5k to have everything done depending on what tips and type of vehicle. I don’t know what it would cost now because I haven’t been to an exhaust shop to get a quote but I think it’s going to be around the $5k for V8 extractors bandage and thicker stainless tubing cats and mufflers and some nice design tips

Then for the last 9 years i have been using a xr8 as a daily and when premium was around $1.30 it was fine but now with the prices up so much more i had to sell it off as my driving had gotten more and it was no longer acceptable to throw so much money away on fuel.

Both had peak torque at 3250rpm funny enough 95RON produced the same power as LPG (198kw/409nm), 98RON in a petrol had no official claim on even more performance, really if you own a n/a anything more than 95RON you're wasting your money. The EcoLpi was a brilliant engine regardless. I have no doubt that it burns a lot cleaner than petrol ! Only reason i didn't buy an EcoLpi G6E (FG2) or even XR6 (FG2) was because unlike the turbo 6 & petrol 6 which have the same higher performance oriented suspension, the EcoLpi had the XT base suspension basically. Bad review! No research on how green lpg is? No information on tax component which is a fraction of petrol/diesel? You didn't comment on the govt subsidy and why it was dropped? No info on Australian gas reserved and how we export it rather than growing our economy. So much more to say but l Recommend you lift your game and research more on your subject. 0 to 100 is a fraction of what lpg is all about? Yep colour was nice !!!
