I remember watching this when it first aired and thinking the animation reminded me of Marvel Superheroes' style. Not a whole lot of action but enough camera tricks and moving mouths to give it life. Your commentary on that aspect of the series sort of backs that up. It was like the Marvel show, just given an artistic upgrade via Doug Wildey.

I loved the ape's franchise, and i remember this cartoon being shown very irregularly on uk TV,btw i did read that the reason that the gorillas had jeeps and trucks was that they were easier to animate than horse's

I was older than the average kid. I was 16 in 1975. I remember the show well. The animation was sub-par because this was during the Dark Ages of American Animation that started were Warner Brothers closed Termite Terrace, their animation studio as a cost-cutting measure. I think this was due to Hanna-Barbera's dominating the market with their cheaper animation. The Apes didn't have airplanes of their own. In fact, the airplane they had, a WWII vintage P-40 Warhawk was found by Ape Archeologists and restored to flying condition with the purpose of capturing humans with a cargo net slung under the plane. I know because this was my favorite episode.

Since you appear to enjoy all things Planet of the Apes, you might want to look up an episode of "Thundarr The Barbarian" "Valley of the Man Apes" which involves mutants patterned after the Movie apes, trying to rebuild the Giant King Kong Robot prop from the 1976 movie to use as a giant conquering robot, because... that's what they do in cartoons. Have fun!

Does anyone remember the comic book seriesKamandi: The Last Boy on Earth which was a direct inspiration (or ripoff depending on your perspective) of the Planet of the Apes. The difference was that in addition to apes many other species also had their own territories and fought among themselves. The main character as a young boy was clearly meant to appeal to the comic book audience of which I was one who loved both Planet and this series in tandem.

I was 12 when this came out and I wasn’t interested in it then. Like now, I had a problem with the timeline that Charlton Heston doomed us to with blowing up the planet. They could have tried explaining that only the New York area was blown to bits and not the entire planet, allowing for more stories, just not any of the same apes or characters… but that probably was over anyone’s head. Watching the show many years later, I hated the idea of the apes using vehicles and airplanes. These were the workings of humans which the apes considered beneath them. Ape city had virtually no technology in the first movie, why would they now not only have it, but embrace it? I’m glad this cartoon only had the one season, it would have ruined the movies.

Great video review! HUGE Return fan! I love that cartoon. I remember watching it back in 75 when I was just in the 1st grade. I remember in the 90's when the Sci-Fi channel re-aired the series on Sunday mornings. That was the first time I had watched the show since childhood. Then in 2006 I got the dvd set. Just love it. Watched it a dozen times over, plus 2. ;) Like I said, a huge fan. I make my own custom Mego Apes based on the cartoon. As a 1970's kid, this was my first contact with the Apes franchise. Then I discovered the Live Action show and last the movies. I really liked the TV show better. Funny thing is that the apes had jeeps in the animated show while they only had horses in the live action. I guess animating a Jeep is cheaper than a horse, eh?
@willmfrank
@willmfrank 14 күн бұрын
Oh yeah...A motor vehicle needs only one cel for the body and two or three for the rotating wheels; a horse can get away with one cel for the body, but needs a whole series for the head, neck and legs...and they're a lot more work than a blurry wheel.

Ah yes 1975. What a time that was to be a kid. With the live action TV series cancellation in 1974, this Saturday morning cartoon kept the Ape-wagon rolling along. But the 70’s was also all about kids playing outside and so as a result, I missed most of the episodes. Years later as an adult, I purchased the DVD set (Five copies to make up for my pour judgment as a ten year-old), LOL

The lack of animation is a way of keeping the cost down. That was pioneered by Clark Haas with Clutch Cargo and using Syncro-Vox. Others kind of stole the idea and exploited using and reusing animation cells over and over again.

I think the really sad part of POTA is that, each film after the original, was given less and less money, so the sequels got progressively cheaper looking.

That was how it was up until Star Wars. The standard Hollywood formula was each sequel got half the budget of the film before. Knowing that really helps explain Superman 4 doesn't it?

Yo, Dan. I watched this show as a kid when it was new, and I didn't like it. The animation was crude even by Saturday morning cartoon standards. The story also seemed substandard compared to the movies. But the thing that bothered me the most was that the monkeys had modern 20th-century Tech, airplanes, automobiles, Etc. However, in retrospect, when you look at the original book "Monkey Planet," the simian society portrayed by Boulle was exactly like the cartoon. This means this show was closer to the novel than the movies ever were. (☉‿☉✿)

As a six-year-old Apes Kid in 1975, I was SO pumped for the new Saturday morning show. And then I started watching it; I was *so* bored halfway through the first episode; I desperately wanted to go outside and play but I felt that would somehow be betraying my Apes bona fides. And once I saw the apes driving jeeps and using telephones, Cornelius and Zira in the same timeline as Urko, “Nova” and “Brent” interacting with the new astronauts…even as a six-year-old I knew it was a piece of garbage. I appreciate it more today (and today we could easily excuse it as being an “alternate timeline”), but when you annoy and alienate a six-year-old primed and ready to go on this show, you know you’ve completely missed the mark.

DFE was well known for using distinct art style to help cover over their lowest of the low budget animation. It was the 70's and animation budgets had cratered. They are most famous for The Pink Panther Cartoons. In the 1980's they would become Marvel Productions. And give us such classics as Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, GI Joe a Real American Hero and of course Transformers.

DePatie-Freleng. Y'know? Freleng? As in Friz Freleng? One of the greatest Warner Bros. cartoon directors. The same company that produced Pink Panther. As for the executives, my good guess is that they were responding to pressure groups of the time. That's why many of the 70s' cartoons were bland and always had a moral lesson. Filmation was huge on this. Your channel must be the most professional I have ever watched. I don't know if you're scripted but I appreciate you cutting to the chase of information. Many is the time when I watch other channels and wait 3 to 5 minutes as they hem & haw and speak off the top of their heads before they get to the reason I am watching. I find most my favorite channels are somewhat polished but yours is the best...and your voice is very pleasing.

So, the first cartoon episode finds Nova, wearing Brent's dog tags, and she sheds a tear when asked where Brent is. And she speaks, without guttural grunting. So, that puts the show AFTER Taylor and Brent, but somehow BEFORE Taylor blows everything up... And, the ship said "NASA", with a variation of the NASA "meatball"... My head hurts now... ;-P

09:15, that animation technique (whose name escapes me) is a cost and time saving measure. Recycling and reusing is Really cost effective. I always thought it was genius myself. Don't really see it anymore these days.

Even if Doug Wilding had watched Escape/Conquest/Battle, I don't see how he would have drawn from them for this cartoon. The attraction for us kids was APES! Talking apes! Gun-toting apes! I can't imagine that they'd want to have the cartoon go back to the 1970s, where Cornelius and Zira were the only apes on the show. They had enough trouble holding their interest as it was. PS - Great review, thanks!

How did I miss this? I was 9 years old, a sci-fi addict since birth, and Saturday morning cartoons was my thing.

Great video!!, I got the DVD and just last week I was revisiting the series… so cool, the “animation” is very static, but I agree, I gives the series a particular look!

Hard to cover in under14 minutes, but what you did cover was excellent. I agree, the primary flaw in the series was stuff like “the Apa Lisa”.

The show I would like to see Dan do a review on is one he has never ever mentioned. I would love to know more about "Blake7" by Terry Nation. It was an incredible SciFi show for it's time. When a group of Political Prisoners are being transported by the Space Federation to a Penal colony the prison ship stumbles onto a super advanced civilizations lost Warship. A ship that is been abandoned yet still controlled by an advanced AI that is suffering a memory problem due a hit it took during it's last battle. It's not very receptive to the Prison Guards that try to board it, so some prisoners are sent in as guinea pigs to help the guards map out the deadly onboard security system. Blake a prisoner manages to get past the security system and in the process assumes command of one of the most powerful Warships in the Galaxy.

As kid who really loved his Saturday morning shows, I can't believe this series got by me. Probably because CBS. But it was a few years before I started watching the movies.

I seem to remember the show being on earlier. I was 7 and was on a kids bowling league that I had to go to immediately after it was over. I probably would have dropped out if I had to miss it! I actually enjoy the animation
