Tom is the man......I've learned so much watching re runs from him. And I mean alot of knowledge on how to get things done. Another good thing about Tom is he don't sugar coat things. He tells you "Look, you wanna get this done its hard work, and its gonna bite your wallet, but you can feel better knowing you did the job and it will last a long time" The whole cast is great, from plumbing with Richard, which is top notch in his trade, to Roger.....I miss him on the show........he was exceptional at outdoor work. My generation will move on with these gentleman's generation (im 41 now) and hope "This old house" is the gem it always was. This group of individuals.........Tom, Richard, Roger, Mark, Jenn, and even the legendary Norm......could show you how to, in a weekend or even a few save yourself thousands and even tens of thousands in repairs, renovations, and struggle to fix even the simplest of repairs........yourself.......MUCH RESPECT!

I remember the first episode that Tom Silva appeared in. He was the contractor on a house that Bob Vila visited. Tom was building a new old house. They talked in the kitchen and Tom explained why the floor was installed early in the construction. So it would "age" by the time they were ready to put the finish on.

I have watched TOH almost since its inception in 1979, and have learned LOTS about tips, tricks, techniques, tools and materials. AFter over 40 years, there's not too much I haven't already seen, and I can find specific "DIY" videos on KZfaq from TOH and others.

So ,what happened. This is more like a walk down memory lane . For an update, Tom's brother sadly passed away years ago. The person you featured when talking about his brother is his nephew, who has taken the lead of Silva construction

Yeah, thank you for asking the same question. The title made me think something happened, as I haven't watched as many videos in recent months, as they do what this channel did and that is use music while the narrator is talking. I personally don't like it (judging by the replies to my comments about it in other channels, some folks don't find the practice annoying; to each their own).

Yes, Tom's brother Dickie Silva has died, but Dickie's son Charlie (Tom's NEPHEW, not, his brother as he was erroneously labeled here) jumped in as the other half of the Silva Brothers Construction Company. Thumbs down to this video for factual errors and a big downer of pure click bait by indicating some catastrophe has occurred to Tommy.

I started watching TOH at its beginning in 1979 when I was 19. I still watch but I roll my eyes these days as the projects they show are so far beyond what any average person could possibly afford. I have also come to dislike the fact that PBS has made all of these guys (especially Russ Morasch) far more money than public television was meant for. The most recent Ipswich project must have cost at least 2 million - probably more.
@williamwong7722
@williamwong7722 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree with you about the recent projects. Even with donated materials, the scope of these projects are off the charts for most middle upper class people. The Ipswich project was just a show of what can be done and salvaged if costs was no object. They really didn’t restore the building but rather restomodded it as fixing a rusty classic car and adding modern conveniences to the original shell. TOH has lost its roots and this episode exemplified that point.

Pretty sure your estimate of his net worth is not even close. That house he lives in in Boston is approaching one million by itself. His company, vehicles, boats, tools, etc. 1000s of shows with their negotiated contracts and endorsements. Are you kidding. Probably closer to 100 million than 5.

Click Bait Title! While this video included a nice trip down memory lane, there was nothing new about the content that those who watch TOH and ATOH did not already know. The title seemed to imply/indicate that Tom Silva had something "happen" to him when this is not the case. Perhaps more people need to give these "click bait" videos a thumbs down

The one thing I have never seen is a small bathroom job. I have a bathroom that i need to change from a tub to a walk in shower. Most of the remodels just take out the old sheet rock and put up new plaster board. But I have a full coat plaster walls and really don't want to take the plaster walls out. The tile on the walls is very attached and doesn't want to come off. What do I do?????

Create a false wall, sink shower pan about 4" for zero-threshold entrance, consider a wall-mounted tankless toilet. If not covered in TOH re-runs other KZfaq videos cover these.

Where in my post did I talk about a toilet???The false wall is not possible as the bathroom is small as it is now...The house was built 75 years ago and then bathrooms were not very big at all.@@ZZz-ud3bb

One of the most interesting parts of this video was a scene where Matt Risinger of "The Build Show" was interviewing Tom Silva (looked like some convention or something). Risinger has a KZfaq Channel that is "dedicated to Building Science and Fine Craftsmanship." Anyone who likes Tom Silva and This Old House should check out Risinger's KZfaq channel here: www.youtube.com/@buildshow/videos So far Risinger has posted more than 1300 videos about construction craftsmanship very similar to what the Silva Brothers and others on This Old House do (plumbing, electrical, etc). His channel has more than one million subscribers, and his videos so far have a combined 242 million views. It's like "This Old House" on steroids.

The Show has become a 'Turn Off ' for me. The costs for the renovations must be very, very high. TOH won't release the final costs. I think they are embarresed to do so. Most likely 95% of the population can't afford what is done with those homes. JMO

In the old days they got a lot of free materials and sometimes appliances from suppliers, who got brand exposure on the show. A lot of the labor was discounted, because they also got exposure to full paying customers outside the show. These days, there are so many high-tech multi-millionaires around Boston that they don't need to worry about that.
