True Crime is a part of everyday media that the TV series, specials, films, and documentaries all about it have been around forever. But actually, that's not the case. The format we now see, wasn’t the norm at all in the 80s. A weekly series built around cases and interviews with the people who were a part of them, re-enacting the crimes…had never been done before.
But then one day a series came along that would not only showcase True Crime but would also give us ghosts, UFOs, and all points in between. Not only that, but the theme song would cause PTSD in most kids my age who had the fortune or misfortune to hear it. That series is Unsolved Mysteries, a series so popular that it changed not only pop culture but the way investigations within law enforcement were conducted.
Today on Gone But Not Forgotten, we’re delving into the question of what happened to Unsolved Mysteries.

Anyone watch the classic 'Kentucky Fried Chicken' Movie? They had a coupla sections called "Bullshit... Or not?" Where the presenter (in a similar format to these kind of shows) would describe various Crime/Mystery scenarios, like was Londons' Jack the Ripper actually the Loch Ness monster ('Nessy'), and other scenarios, and asking the truly great question... "Was it just bullshit? Or not?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 😎🇬🇧

I only wished that the new unsolved mysteries took cues from the older versions to improve upon it. Like using the original intro and music and at the very least taking public votes on which ones they think are the best and to still continue with the re-enactments. Hopefully it’ll happen because I would definitely watch it because the new version sucks in my opinion. They should also include new episodes as well. Personally, I think if they did, it could go on for another 10 years but that’s just my opinion. Lol.

The intro theme composite drawings of the suspects scared the heck out of me as a kid growing up in the 90s but I just couldn't stop watching. Best true crime show in history. They still do when I play one of their re-runs

I used to love that show ! There was a show called sightings. And it focused more on unexplained phenomenon, paranormal stuff and UFO and alien stories. I was always intrigued by mysteries, unexplained. and paranormal stuff.

I remember Sightings. There was also Rescue 911, and of course, America's Most Wanted.

People tend to forget the predecessor to this show called “In Search Of…” that was hosted by Leonard Nimoy during the 70s to early 80s. They have the old episodes here on KZfaq. But there was something about Robert Stack & and Unsolved Mysteries that truly stood out for Gen-X.

As a small kid in the 90s this show scared the hell out of me. Just the intro song alone gave me chills. I had to wrap in a blanket with my back against the wall to even watch a second of it lol

6 bars, 8 tones, played on a keyboard (with effects), and you got the music that can rival any horror movie.

This was one of my favorite shows growing up. Robert Stack was the perfect fit as the host. I really liked the updates they gave on previous episodes. The music at the beginning was perfect as well. Some of the stories they presented happened in the cities I have actually lived in, some even a few miles from my home address. I used to drive past some of the areas where the crimes actually occurred. Great show, they don't make classics like Unsolved mysteries anymore.

That intro and the reenactments of the early seasons were the scariest stuff I’ve seen on tv/movies. The long pauses on still photos of the victims or suspect, The camera shooting behind a tree as a kid is walking to schools on a kidnapping episode, A car’s headlights driving down a deserted highway in the middle of the night on a murder episode, and Robert Stack’s awesome voice and presence.
