The beat maker is just the composer of the instrumental. The producer is the overseer of the completion of the song, giving direction and input, telling you what tone to use etc and Puff is a master of that.

He asked when do instrumental albums sell. But what can "producers" sell without the beats?....producers really have no jobs without the work of the beatmakers and the artists. That's why "beatmakers" get the shine and the producers will always play the background. The beats are the foundation of every song. Period.

I don’t agree with him saying “just a beatmaker” like a beatmaker isn’t one of the most important roles. When you know how to put instruments together and layer all of your drums, and work day in and day out to perfect your sound- you are a PRODUCER!! Producers are beat makers!! What Bdot is talking about is EXEC-producing-when you take a beat from a producer and you take the vision even further as far as finding the artist, establishing that connection and creating the work. 💯

Love the fact he explains the definition between beat maker and producer. You can make a whole instrumental, but as soon as you sell it and some one else is using it to orchestrate the finishing of a song then you have to understand you were the beat maker of the song. The producer is the director of the song. Both play an important role, but one is there to help the artist with their artist on a personal level.

I really like that Poppa was a playa track off of Nas's "The Lost Tapes". My older brother had played it for me and we'd always plan trips to either best buy or target to buy the 1st copy of certain hip hop albums upon their releases and if we really respected the artist, we'd both each buy a copy of their album specifically (Kanye West, Jay-Z & Nas) and It was the 1st time I'd ever heard of the producer term "panning" because the hi hat arrangement would swing from left to right beautifully 🫢🤦🏾‍♂️and the chime was strategically placed and weaved into the track but Oh my God I love that sample, which by the way came from an Eddie Kendricks a.k.a Cornbread from the Temptations record. Nas's story telling was visual and everything jelled together nicely but I haven't heard many songs like that record if any. I challenge anyone to learn that hi hat arrangement 🔥🤦🏾‍♂️🤣👌🏾

Hiphop gave a different meaning to producer. That's where all the confusing comes from, constantly. D-dot is absolutely right. When somebody write lyrics, we don't say that person produced the record. you have writers, composers. and a producer. they can overlap, but non of them are the same. Obviously of course. But for some reason in hiphop we don't like the word composer, and also don't like the word beatmaker. So producer it is. When convenient.

It's because of lack of (musical) knowledge and/or vocabulary. It's like how we say "16 BARS". We count a bar as an 8 count when in music that's 2 measures of 4/4 (1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4). So really, if you give it to a trained musician who reads music, it's 32 BARS. In this case, as far as the producer and beat maker, the producer oversees everything. They know and orchestrate what writers to get, musicians/singers to get, what engineers to work with, the proper things to have in the room and they know how to get what they must out of these people to make a proper record...or PRODUCTION. Case in point: Quincy Jones never played drums on his records and didn't write all of the songs, but he's known as what.. ?

5:42 Ye doesn’t hide the fact that Mike Dean works for/with him. Mike Dean is credited on everything, tours and performs live with Ye. So Mike dean isn’t a “ghost producer” I’m low key confused on D Dot point in this whole clip? DJ Tomp did alot of work in graduation and Ye said “Tomp killed this shit” in big brother. He’s honest about who produces what… Gotta see the whole video for more context…

I feel like the beat maker and producer discrepancy is only known within the industry - to the consumers, the person that made the beat is the producer - that’s why we were so flabbergasted when Rick Rubin said he can’t play an instrument but calls himself a producer

I’m glad he said “co-producer” because any other title like “track-maker” is nonsense and you don’t hear that in any other genre. At the very least Kanye should’ve been credited as composer, arranger and/or musician like it was before beat-machine/DAWs were made. I agree and respect most of what D. Dot said but a producer by definition is one who creates a product and the product was a music track. So yeah “co-producer” at the very least. But whatever D. Dot is a legend, respect.

99% of rappers produce themselves, this is not Pop or RnB. Dont fall for the game. In hip hop we care about who produced the beat not who pressed record and said "I like that." 2 Pac said it best."Daz produces the beat, then Dre comes along and turn a few knobs and get all the credit."

I worked on many projects as a producer and beatmaker. There IS a difference. Dr. Dre is a great example. Scot Storch will make a beats and then he will go in and add his flair then work with the artist to produce the beat. That's why artist talk about how long he takes to record a song with him b/c he's a producer that's obsessed with perfection. Think of a composer and an orchestra. The orchestra are the beatmakers, they play the instruments and the composer is the producer. He puts it all together. Some people are just good at making beats. Some are just good at producing. Some can do both. I've done both. It's a HUGE difference. A BEATMAKER CANT MAKE HITS OR A HOT SONG. A PRODUCER CAN!! Another example is Quincy Jones. Thriller is the greatest selling album of all time and Quincy Jones is considered one of the greatest producers of all time. He knows how to play instruments himself(orcehstra/beatmaker) but on thriller(and other albums too), he produced the records(composer/producer). If the people he hired to play the instruments did it themselves we both know Thriller wouldn't've never sounded the way it did. Our problem in the hip hop genre is that we are taught false and flat out incorrect information on what is what. Any other genre this is clearly understood. Kanye also did the SAME THING that D.Dot is talking about with HIT-BOY!

Kanye > D-Dot. This guy sounds bitter. It's okay, Kanye's credits speak for themselves. What's happening right now with D-Dot? You have to make the beat dummy. Then you, finish producing it to its final form. This got did the puffy symbol and says he produced the beat. Kanye was Ghost producing for D-Dot. Mike Dean does produce Kanye's songs. Why can't D-Dot do it now? I believe Kanye over this guy

D Dot is telling the truth. He was the one that mentored Kanye, managed him and helped mold his sound and made it sound better. He didn’t create Kanye. I understand where D Dot is coming from. D Dot still produces and he’s still dope but he also is a dope beat maker and a producer that understands how to arrange a track and add sounds on it to make it better. Its not a bitter thing. Him and Kanye met again a few years ago and Kanye was doing interviews on magazines like he was making it seem like he went and did these connections with artists by himself. He didn’t. Obviously him and D Dot still have issues to this day. If you notice, he never brings up D Dot name plus D Dot helped Kanye get his publishing back and taught him about the business. He was underneath D Dot for three years (1998-2001).

😂 I feel you but thats not how that works. The beat is essentially a rough sketch/idea. The producer fleshes out the record. That same beat could of been overdubbed a million times all kinds of sounds replaced, shit added , stacked, and arranged. The producer also does the same with the vocals and with the artist during the recording process. Which is the work he was talkn about. after all that shit, he still has to make sure the mix is where it need to be and the direction for the record is not lost. D Dot has the right to feel how he feel about that situation. Cuz after all that he has to SUBMIT the record wit his reputation behind it. Thats after he approves that its finished. Thats y niggas hate Dr. Dre 😂. Because if it flop they not lookn for the co producer they lookn for the D DOT .

@@knix2for5 nailed it. The "producer" wears a lot of hats. beatmakers can be Producers too but it's not always the case. I know a lot of beatmakers that can't produce for shit and vice versa. Kanye's early stuff sonically sounded like ASS but he got away with it cuz he was very skilled and the bones were there. That's where a D. Dot would come in or Jermaine Dupri or shit even Mike Dean. My thing is, regardless of all that, the Producer puts their name on the credits because they know full well that most of the world will think they made the beat. Most people don't read all the credits. And those that do see producer and equate that with 'they made the beat'.
