The story of Saab is one of out-of-the-box thinking. This Swedish brand barely made it past its 70th birthday before it died, but the legacy it built throughout those decades made it something truly special. But what made Saab such a legend in all things detail-oriented and quirky? What were the most legendary and popular models, and what made them so fun-to-drive? And finally, why did the brand die out in the early 2010s? Today on Past Gas, part one of our two part story on Saab!

I had a 2001 Saab 9-3, brand new at the time. This thing saved my life after rolling down a boulder ditch at 70mph in Death Valley, Ca. The structural rigidity was incredible and side air bags went off without a hitch. Walked away with ZERO injuries. The car body was so intact and my body was held in place so well that no part of me even touched the airbags. Radio was still playing. Thank you, Saab.

I really like joes artichoke tatoo, I have one too because i cooked for 16 years. I like seeing the face of the laugh we always hear off camera, I thought it was a sound effect for a long time, also Christine's YOLKED back. I like nolan because he reminds me of myself if i were doing a lot better in some areas of life and worse in others. I've owned 4 Saab 9-5's over the past 20 years. First one I had was a '99 9-5 and that saved my life in a car accident, so I've stuck with them since. I've had my last Saab which is a '06 9-5 Aero since '08 and has been my daily driver since then. With a few bolt-ons, and a tune, these make decent power as well. Hell of a sleeper car that flies under the radar.

Saab. Nice! A little more history here I gotta add...Seeing that one of the founders of Saab started SKF, in a way SKF sorta led to the founding of Volvo as well, as Volvo founders Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson were employed at SKF.

When I went from a broken BMW E34 to a 3rd gen Firebird, I used to have Saab's as winter cars as winter is 6 months long here and I had my car in storage. Hard to find a car more comfy than a Saab 9000, I had four. One absolutely mint 9000 turbo I'd only driven like 200 miles, my ex drove through an electric pole sideways (black ice), right on the A-pillar, so again, I had to get another one. Everyone in the car was safe though, something of a plus for Saab's as well. I'd still really like to buy a 9-5 running E85 or converted to electric.

What's up Gassers?! Joe, I'm glad you made it past 2018 😂 We wouldn't have ever heard of the term "keep it juiced" 😅. Christina, a.k.a. little sexy frog 🐸, super cool to have you step in for the very missed "Pumphrey 502" creator. P.s. rock on, alkaline trio is awesome, respect to you in that! Nolan...it's time for a tattoo my dude, James has the Dodge logo, maybe it's time to get the ole' "Blue Oval" on you somewhere for the Mustang, or at least a Donut tattoo man, make it forever official, but for reals thanks for slaughtering other languages 😂 and for all the secret science lessons in your videos. I'll be a Donut follower for life. You guys and your videos and all your awesome takes on cars, along with the jokes, and messing around has actually helped me to get through a tough time in my life, and I will be forever grateful to you for that! Let's keep Donut going forever! P.s. go on tour and swing through Utah, you could do a meet at Utah motorsports campus, yeah that's right, UTAH has a cool racetrack! 😂 Thanks for all the media, DONUT FOR LIFE!!!💪🤘🏎💨🏁

I'm sure it's already been addressed by a number of others, but you were driving me crazy with the consistently incorrect of longitudinal engines. There is longitudinal (or north-south orientation) and there is transverse (or east-west orientation). The majority of rear wheel drive cars are longitudinal as that puts the output of the crank facing the rear of the car and naturally feeds into the transmission and drives haft out to the rear differential and axles. The majority of front wheel drive cars are use a transverse mounted engines with a transaxle (rather than a transmission) mounted most often on the driver side that feeds power to half shafts/CV axles.
