Catgirl eyebrows are objectively terrible. Mine are currently modded with a wee bit of facepaint magic, so unfortunately that was the biggest shock to me in the benchmark LOL. I also hate how choosing light hair makes your eyebrows go away. Let me choose my eyebrow color. That's why, with a dozen alts, none of them have white/super light hair!

I think the update has just increased the clarity for these people about how soulless their characters always were.

They took so much character away from almost all lips. I think if they fix that and blend the lips into the face better so it doesnt look penciled around the edges. And fix the lighting then most people will be good.

Ok, the dry lips I agree, but real skin does not shine. If they make it shine it will look like a doll, like the current models look.

All of the lifeless/soulless stuff is nonsense to me, as I’m simply not seeing that any more in the new vs the old. I’m not seeing any dead eyes at all. Some of the specific shape things though are a concern like the bunny boy lips and riots will happen if catgirls don’t get their fangs back. Overall the lighting on the skin and lips looks so so much better on the new with less of the weird/harsh shadows of the originals. I do think they should add a few new options/toggles to reflect a few things like lip gloss and eyebrows, etc.

The eyes have way more soul now. The problem is the sculpting change making it look worse to people.

I will stand by my character no matter what they end up looking like.

I spend quite a bit of time looking at points of graphical fidelity in video games I mod (like Skyrim) in a vain attempt to make photo realistic gameplay. The new stuff looks much better but I think that the better quality lighting and texture decals make all of the reflective, shiny surfaces more muted. The real problem here seems to be a lack of options in the character creator. Giving people the ability to add gloss/matte and whatever else to different areas would be one of many things they could add to the CC, including more face shapes and the ability to further-diversify the faces (cheeks, chin, jaw, forhead, etc) and parts of the faces (eye lash density/length or eye size/angle, etc). That said, my 3090 and 10900K certainly _FELT_ the difference in the new textures and shading methods, particularly when using the GTAO Quality shading method. Went from 300+fps at 1440p to 120 if I'm lucky lol. It does look a helluva lot better when maxed out though, imo.

I think she was right in the end cuz SE is going to update the benchmark tool and some of the things she and others in the community pointed out were also mentioned by Yoshi P on the recent article.

i have a fear that with all the people complaining about the removal of jank that ct 3 will add some of it back. her character looks great in the benchmark trailer and she calls it cursed. pupils arent small unless you are in direct sunlight facing the sun or if you have a ring light blasting your face. im just like please keep the dynamic lighting and shading, please dont add that weird forced eye shine back, please dont paint the shadows on the face.

the video is showing Aura face 1(not in EN severs so no idea how community call it), if someone try other 3 faces it's much easier to find the differences between now and benchmark. as a Aura 3(or crab horn), the eyes changed so much and when i try the blue eyes with black limbal ring, under the forest lighting, it just feels dead dead.

I totally agree with what she says about the hair, looks like they ditched the shine to flatten everything and show the texture instead. Personally Im not blown away by the benchmark but will wait to see how my character looks in Dawntrail. Scared.

The shading above the eyes is much darker and larger. The pupils are bigger, causing them to merge into the shadow. The pupils being bigger also makes them seem higher/the eyelids lower. The lighting on the eyes' color is lower. I, personally, am satisfied and would be satisfied with the way my character looks. But his eyes are in fact darker. Big shadows above someone's eyes, and their eyelids being lower, and their eyes going dark are all very common tropes of showing someone being dead behind their eyes. The eye shine being calculated results in it being smaller, and less often appearing makes it even worse. Eye shine is commonly used to indicate liveliness. Artificially added eye shine is FINE. This is ANIME STYLE. Genshin is an excellent example of this, it added so much liveliness. It's not realistic, no, but it is aesthetic and an aesthetic that has been removed. Artificial eye shine should be made toggleable. The perspective that artificial eye shine is unrealistic and people viewing more dynamic lighting on eyes as more lively is also a valid opinion, but it's not the only one.

I dont understand why Zepla doesnt see the dead eyes, the more round faces. My female highlander really looks quite different. Less compassionate, less kind, more lifeless.

I like the new lips more. And I like everything about the character. Creator more besides the fact that things got taken away apparently.

Going alongside this in the benchmark I noticed that at certain angles the subsurface scattering really shows on the face even when it shouldn't. Like in the Thanalan scene for the character creator, if you turn the character sideways relative to the sun and zoom in there's a reddish glow like when you hold a flashlight up to your hand. It's hard to notice at first with the clothing on, but with the contrast to the body's skin color it's a bit striking and very unnatural looking. That might be where the glow/uncanny look comes from that people are talking about. I think if they tone down the sss, at least on the face, it might solve a lot of problems. Anyone else notice this? Also, sad and missed opportunity, the bun ears don't have sss :(

The shading/coloring/textures around the eyes has less contrast. Having contrast creates an illusion of depth. In other words, the eyes look less flat, which probably makes them seem more lifelike. Human eyes in the real world aren't flat. The illusion of depth tends to produce a more real or lifelike appearance. Granted, I'm simply speculating that this is what Aitherea was noticing in the video. But if it is what she was noticing, I tend to agree.

My miqo'te def lost me with the update, au'ras have become my new preferred race with this update. The skin looks blurry with the old patch, the updated version looks more detailed. It's a bit too shiny, though. I def would just want more customization options, because the update so far IS vibing with me, I like most of it, but it's causing so much indecisiveness in me now, because not a single race looks as good as it could be, because the options are abysmal. Just give us more options pls.

Sounds like pretty much everything she was criticising is being addressed, so there ya go lol. Personally I did notice the lighting was flat on my Viera WoL but that was about it. And I'm not too big on "shine" when it comes to skin personally, so that wasn't a big deal to me. In fact whenever that's an option in any char creator I tune it pretty low. That said, I heard the main problems were with characters that had lighter, "fair" skin so that may be why my Viera looked fine to me since she's darker.

To be honest i always thought a lot of facial features were a little too exaggerated and I was glad to see many of them be toned down and smoothed out a bit. I agree that the character models could use a bit more gloss in places and that the eyebrows could stand to be a bit more defined, but overall I am very satisfied.

I don't get the soul thing with the eyes. I think the eyes look better, but the other complaints I agree with.

@ZepLive theyr already working on all things related to DawnTrail and Benchmark check the LodeStone post they already know about most of the issues and they are Revamping the Benchmark and the Entire Character Creator for the E.A and Full Launch entirely to fix the issues

In short, once the next expansion hits, everyone will be buying a "Phial of Fantasia" from Mog Station. Feels intentional.

Yoshi P came out earlier & said he knows about all of the issues! He said they are going to remake it & he will let us know! He said it has never been updated! They are going to release a newer version before Dawntrail!

I play aura and I agree with some And some not. The skin shine is a lil much hair is dull a little and lips could use more shine, But I love everything else being defined.

They are scrapping the benchmark and we are getting a new benchmark with the new lighting. Yoshi stated they didn’t update the character creation lighting and that’s the reason why we have an issue with the benchmark and that it was an oversight and apologized.

I have a 4070ti and the benchmark ran poorly for me. At the end, it said Im only able to run it on high. Somehow I don't trust it.

These changes in the faces and the rest feels like what just happened in Pokemon go not long ago. The character models look atrocious now, to the point that I have not logged in to the game since a couple of days after the changes, since I can't stand the change. I hope this is not the same for XIV, I would be very sad...

i really expect the light eyebrows and face paint to be relics of the lighting that yoshi p mentioned in his lodestone post. most of these types of issues will resolve with the benchmark 2.0.

I'm sorry, but this Aitherea girl comes off unhinged. I get the complaints with the lip detail, but everything else is subjective or needed better lighting. With a graphics update, minor details are guaranteed to change. This is a case where people are just used to flaws of the old system. The skin looks better now

Dude people need to chill out. 1-2 days and they will get used to it. They are completely ignoring the fact that the current models are ugly and horrible as the nitpick the new ones because the line of the nose is 1 degree different. Hopefully they stop listening to the community. The community isn't better artists than the developers. They'll be happy in the long run.
