The pacing felt too fast, particularly because the reasoning for how it works builds up from beginning to end. It takes a second to let the understanding sink in before moving, and not having it means the next part doesn't make full sense. E.g. the nuances of the two votes and what kind of power-affinity (national interest, popular interest, etc) those bodies tend to have. And if you read this far then I'll say that I am a frequent watcher I think the videos are great.

Works about the same as regular elections here: 1. There's one day for election. 2. All of the elections are in Sunday. 3. You have to brings your ID. 4. If you don't live in a place where you go to vote(ie. you don't live in the area tied to a specific voting spot, you have to notify 3-4 days before that you will vote elsewhere).

Sameeee! That step of individual countries selecting their commissioners was not clear. I understood the parliament elections, their groupings, and the election of the commission president, but not the rest of the individual commissioners, or how people are chosen for the council of the European Union.

The European council are the head of member states governments. When a new Prime Minister or President is elected in a national election, he automatically become an European Councilor. The European council then nominate the European Commissionioners. It usually done as a careful negotiation betwen Councillors, so every countries are represented in the Commissionion.

The national vote just refers to your national elections which occur on different years depending on the country. These elections vary by country but generally it is the election in which a new national goverment is formed (e.g. parliamentary elections in spain, presidential elections in France). The things is that the European Comission which is kind of like the EU goverment, has one member from each country of the EU. So each country's government proposes a name to be part of the comission, which will generally be from the same political party as the party in government in that country. This is a complicated negotiation because the President of the European Comission has to agree to these people because they will form his "team", then the European Council (the coutries' presidents or prime ministers) have to agree, and lastly it is all approved by the parliament which normally makes all the commissioners explain in parliament why they are the right person for the job. Note that the country of the president of the comission doesn't get to nominate someone else, nor does the country of the high representative (akin to a foreign affairs minister for the EU). These posts are negotiated with both countries and political parties in mind.

The issue with that, is that will totally destroy member states sovereignty. Today, EU commission is responsible toward member states governments. If EU commission become responsible toward EU citizen instead, then EU governments basically lost their executive power and EU would officially be a federal state. I am not necessarily against it, but people need to understand that giving a more direct democracy to EU means giving away their country sovereignty.

Pardon any misunderstandings here from a confused American: isn't that how it usually works in parliamentary democracies? No one votes directly for the Chancellor/Prime Minister (except in their own constituency). (Of course, that's how it *technicallY* works here in the Electoral College, but that is definitely not what you see on the ballot. I'm not saying our system is any better, but this doesn't seem *that* different from how indirect elections typically work, at least to me).

@@jeffbenton6183 The thing is that Ursula von der Leyen wasn't even on the ballot. Normally in parliamentary democracies even though you don't vote for your prime minister directly, parties campaing beforehand with a candidate who will be elected prime minister if they win a majority and who also runs as the lead candidate for one of main consituencies (in Spain it is traditionally for the capital of Madrid). This was not the case for von der Leyen. She was one of the ministers of the german goverment but got nominated by European Council (countries' presidents and prime miniesters) because the candidate that was on the ballot (Manfred Weber) lacked government experience.

@@Phil-bc2sdI understand that many people fear to lose their wealth in these troubled times and are angry. However, while immigration is a challenging topic that Europe has to face it is certainly not the root of all the complex problems we face. The far-right parties use it as an easy scapegoat. Blaming everything on immigration is an easy message to spread with which they are pretty successful. However, their political programs lack true solutions to better the peoples lifes. On the contrary: By promoting tax plans that favor the rich over the poor and the middle class and by cutting social spending they weaken the economical and social status of the very people that vote for them, the workers. Additionally, they spread misinformation and division for a simple reason: When people feel unsafe and/or are enraged, they tend to vote for extremist parties. With this being said, I'd like to ask you kindly to reconsider your position.
