Back in the day we didn't have to ruin cartridges to find out though. A Gameboy Color game could go inside of an original Gameboy without mutilating it. I just wouldn't play.

I don't think any mentally stable child wondered this. 3ds games were made for the 3ds which wasn't a thing when the og ds was released (obviously) it's just common sense that games programmed for a new system wouldn't play on an older one which it doesn't even fit inside of without being damaged

Even if the replay detects something, It still wouldn't boot. The internal chipset on the 3DS cartridge works a different way, so the DS's software wouldn't be able to read the data.

I have a homebrew application on my 3DS that will automatically boot up a DS game if I have one inserted. But if I happen to have a 3DS game inserted and I try to boot up the application, it brings up an error.

Action Replay on the DS works by loading the Action Replay, selecting your codes, and then removing the cart and putting in your desired game. Annoyingly, it also has a custom cable for it.

@FUTURE10S I've never heard of this before lol every action replay I had for the DS family of consoles was a cartridge with a giant cartridge reader on top that you would put the game in to and it would detect what game you have inserted and give you a list of codes to choose from. you could also add custom codes of your own and upload databases from elsewhere. my GameCube action replay worked similar to what you're describing though

when I was maybe 8 years old and in the country for a bit, me and a neighbor the same age had dsis. one day he came over with luigi’s mansion dark moon for 3ds, we were so excited to play but we didn’t know the 3ds worked differently so when he saw the tab on the side he straight up bit it off. like right in front of me. you can guess it didn’t work anyway

I could explain how the cartridge was not taken by the DS. The DS runs checks as follows, "Is this game supposed to be run?" "Is it for the DS?" And then, it looks at the pegs inside the cartridge to see if it's meant for the DS.

For anyone curious, the reason this doesn’t work is because 3DS games use the .3ds format which is not supported for DS because DS uses the .nds format instead.

The .3ds and .nds stuff is just how a backed up dump is represented on other media. The data itself and encryption on the 3ds cartridge memory can't be recognized by the NDS. Still a good thing to know electrically they're the same. Forcing a GBA cart into a GB or GBC slot is a terrible ideia, for example.

Reminds me of what I did with an imported copy of Rockman & Forte so that it would physically fit into my SNES. In that case though it worked fine because the interior hardware was identical to the Super Famicom.
