I had to tow an HD truck the other day with a strap for the first time. I wasn't sure, but I work on vehicles, so I just assumed that you needed to pull the driveshaft. The driver tried to talk me out of it and even got pissed because we were wasting time. But I did it anyway. After watching this, im glad that I did. 💪

In my previous occupation in the Towing industry A friend I work with died hooking a bus on the side of the expressway. The bus got hit, he was underneath. If I was doing the tow I'm hooking and slow rolling to the next exit before I'm dropping the driveshaft. Every working person deserves to go home at the end of their shift.and I care far more about my life then I do your transmission.

I'm a truck mechanic...One time I had to change an air brake valve right in the middle of the frame,up under the fifth wheel-On the side of I-95 during rush hour. The valve had exploded,and the spring brakes were locked. So there I am,wedged under the tractor,with the driveshaft in my armpit,and all I kept thinking was that if the truck got hit,no one would even know I was there until they smelled me rotting. Sorry about your friend.

29 year Eaton Rep. Excellent explanation. I can only add that if a manual transmission is in low range being towed with the drive shaft installed, once the driveshaft speed reaches 1000 rpm, the transmission main shaft speed will be turning roughly 5000 rpm. The reason is the auxiliary is about 5:1 gear reduction, but when it being driven by the drive shaft, it is a 500% overdrive. Hope that makes sense….
@endtimeawakening5557
@endtimeawakening5557 6 ай бұрын
Makes perfect sense, Mike. When you backdrive, everything is opposite, and reduction becomes overdrive. I've heard that many tank drive trains were destroyed from the driver's popping the clutch to slow them down while descending a hill. The backdrive became insanely fast overdrive...

Yea shady things can happen in businesses that appear shady. I work for a towing company that has a good reputation in my mind. We’ve got at least 30 trucks, and people who have generations of experience. But I really don’t like people with your opinion who think we’re all shady. In some situations it is necessary to pull the drive shaft. I’ve never had to do it on a car. But something like a pickup truck with a trailer might need to have the driveshaft pulled.

Thank you! Several years ago I was on I -95 going about 80mph. A semi tow was towing a broken down log truck. I remember the smell of hot metal literally 2seconds later the drive shaft flew out towrds me, hit the interstate and bounced. I hit it and it wedged between my right front tire and the wheel well. It immediately locked my wheels hard right. Headed for a stand of old pines, I thought it was over for me. Soon as I hit soft dirt it came unlodged and i barely missed a 20 25 ft diameter pine. .....THIS!!!!!!!!!

The first thing I always did was pull the drive shaft. I wouldn't pull an axle shaft because I didn't trust it. Many law enforcement officers expect you to just hook up and go if the truck is blocking the road and don't care if you tear up the transmission. I took the time to explain to them that towing it just a mile to a safer place will cause damage that I will not pay for so if that is what you are ordering me to do then please sign my waiver and they always allowed me time to pull a shaft.

You NEVER - EVER work on a vehicle on the side of a busy highway UNLESS traffic has been halted by police. Nothing will ever happen to a transmission if you have to tow the vehicle in neutral a couple of miles down the road to a safe location to remove the driveshaft. NEVER tow ANY rear wheel drive vehicle without dropping the driveshaft. Neutral does NOT stop the transmission shaft gears from turning.
@TrashPanda5150
@TrashPanda5150 Жыл бұрын
In a truck with a DT12 transmission, you can't tow or push it across a parking lot with the rear wheels on the ground and the engine not running, much less tow it a couple miles. You will ruin the mainshaft pilot bearing. You can't move it without disconnecting the driveline or removing all 4 axle shafts.

Yeah it’s no different when towing a car. I remember one of my buddies put a brand new tremec tranny in his mustang it was 4,000 bucks and he towed to to the track with a tow dolly with the back wheels on the ground. When he got up to the line at the track he took off and it wouldn’t go into gear, when it went into 3rd it spit it right back out. When I pulled it apart for him bearings were smoked, bushings smoked, completely ruined the tranny, it had one mile on it he literally installed it drove it around the block then towed to track. I told him to tow it backwards or start the engine and let it run while towing it because that’s not good for tranny but he didn’t listen he said it’s a manual transmission it’s a gear box there is no fluid pump in it like an automatic tranny, I explained to him why but he didn’t listen and he learned the hard way.

If you are towing for a short distance, an alternative would be to tie the clutch pedal down so the engine is disengaged and put the transmission into the highest gear. That way the gears on all the shafts will turn and splash the gear oil around. But only for short distances. Like less than 10 miles. Or you could be looking at replacing the throw-out bearing, or the clutch pressure plate if the bearing is built into it like most big rig clutches are.

That sounds like a bad idea. Just disconnect the driveline and chain it up or pull some axles out
@allenlarabie8854
@allenlarabie8854 Жыл бұрын
Also make sure the axles are off the ground and transmission is in neutral so that there's play in the drives shaft. When unhooking the drive shaft under pressure it can kick upward into the cross member frame and cause Sevier injuries to your hand. I saw a guy loose his fingers. Slammed so fast into the cross member frame. Lost one finger and part of his thumb...

I flat towed a manual truck with front hub lockers in free position and the transfer case in 4 H. didn’t remove shafts, transfer case didn’t jam up. Theory is, as long as the front hubs are disconnected from the rear, there wont be any binding with the transfer case or tire slipping in turns. Also with all the gears moving would irrigate the bearings in the transfer case. Everyone says put the transfer case in neutral when flat towing. But that would mean the rear tires would only turn the spindle and not the gears in the TC to throw fluid around. In essence best course of action like you suggest is either remove center drive shaft, or if you are lazy like me, position the manual Transfer-case stick to limp and wiggly in 4H to keep the gears splashing.

Even if no damage were to have occurred it is still good policy in the absence of any model specific knowledge or info that would specifically indicate that flat towing is ok.
