What made you decide to get a EV without a way to charge at home?

@@nate_2092 I just really love the way it drives. Super quiet, instant torque, less mechanical complexity, etc. But yeah the other side of owning it is the charging and it's a huge burden lol

There is a lot of recent research that says fast charging doesn’t impact degradation as first expected. This is why batteries are lasting longer and warranties have increased. It is still better to only occasionally charge above 80% but with the higher ranges that has become less of an issue.

Had to change mine twice got it to 330k, nickel cadmium batteries which Toyota uses fail differently then lithium ion.

I think you are reacting to the fact she didn’t even mention how many EV manufacturers are now considering ease of battery replacement and how newer EVs will allow owners to replace batteries and essentially have a like new vehicle as the EV motors have minimal moving parts and last WAY longer than gas engines. Lastly, the battery that is removed is recycled and the majority of the lithium and other minerals can be processed and reused and over time the cost of the battery raw materials is less about mining and more about recycling which then should lead to even lower total costs over time. So, I don’t see it as disposable but rather recyclable which should provide more value over time.

Actually they have replaceable batts on some EVs in China so it is possible to replace them. Also, there are already Teslas that have same battery for 12 years so that is over a decade. If owner simply replaces the battery now, they can replace with longer lasting battery now as the tech has improved. In China, they are also using different chemistries in batteries. We simply need to do similar in US. The reason is the world is moving to EVs. As the world does, the US buyers will see lower total costs and it will become inevitable that US will have more EVs. It’s a supply/demand thing. With electric you can produce your own electric easily with PVs on your roof. It puts you in charge and no longer depend on big companies. It means you have more freedom if you go electric. So that’s why I think we’ll see more of it and why batt prices will drop as economies of scale set in.

@urbanyouths that’s actually not true. Do you own one? I own an EV. Range has not dropped dramatically. I know there were some less sophisticated EVs 10 yrs ago that might not have held up but battery management systems have come a long way. Please don’t let the nay sayers create undue influence. Buy one and make up your own mind. Keep in mind your phone doesn’t have the sophisticated BMS that EV does. Further, in China they have EVs where you don’t charge them, you simply swap the battery at a “recharge station”. I don’t see that model coming to US as no one wants to give up their battery they took care of for one that they don’t trust how someone else took care of etc. however the technology exists to swap batteries efficiently. So, in theory EV manufacturers could allow you to swap out batteries for around $10k at end of life of your current EV batt (ie in 10-15 years as it drops to 80% capacity of what it started with). That would effectively give you a new car. Issue is how well you take care of the body, breaks and motors. Since EV breaks tend to last longer due to regeneration, electric motors don’t have as many moving parts and don’t tend to fail as much over time, costs of repairs will be low. The key will be the body styling and wear and tear on body. I would suggest body shops doing repairs and paint / wrap shops will do well in this new world going forward. And while you will probably think I’m wrong, what if I’m right? You could be saving thousands on not paying for gasoline or oil changes for the next decade and if you put on solar panels on your roof you could get low cost electricity.

@mewfuz37... have you ever seen a 12 yr ICE car’s condition? almost garbage.. gaskets gone, spark plugs, filters, lots of break pads.... water pump gone, refrigerant hose gone, oil pump gone... talk about disposable

Btw, I’ve used a 2015 Fiat 500e EV, still 90% of original range.. what can I say... just great

no, never; and never go below 20% if you can; SO...the key, as in my Solar home off-grid system is to OVER desigh the thing, so that you never need to be off from the 20% to 80% range

Actually, you could easily swap the battery and keep driving the EV for 100 years as well. Just like on the Model T they no doubt replaced ICE parts along the way

@@mrbizi5652 have you actually priced that out a new battery is almost as much as a new car fixing an ICE is simple and cheap by comparison I had a truck with over a million miles on it when I was younger bought it when it was at 900k put another 120k on it then gave it to my dad and to change this battery it’s a complete frame off disassembly

EV’s have way less moving parts, yes batteries are expensive, but Tesla/Lucid/Rivian should last more than 500K easily. In 10 years batteries will be way cheaper, it will be like changing a transmission or cheaper. The electric motors will last forever, think about that office ceiling fan that has been spinning for the last 50 years. Plus, if you have to add up all the oil changes, belts, plugs, brakes, fluid swaps, and other stuff you have to do on an ICE vehicle, the cost of ownership of EV’s is waaay less. Even today.

@Justthemow.. hah. What a ridiculous argument... the Model T, beautiful yes.. I’m guessing only the steering wheel is from the original body. The rest has been refurbished, redone or replaced many times over.

Only if you interact with the Lithium and the batteries are sealed so end user shouldn’t ever come in contact with them.
