More than half of college students experience blackouts, according to studies. Alcohol, it turns out, interferes with the brain's ability to convert short term memories into long term ones. Since those memories don't get stored, you won't be able to recall them later.
Following is a transcript of the video:
Saturday, 12 PM. The light burns. Your head throbs. And you have no recollection of how you got back home. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. More than half of college students experience blackouts, according to several studies. And let’s be clear. Blacking out doesn’t mean passing out. You were probably awake and aware the entire night. So then, where did all those memories go?
Let’s rewind to Friday night. Normally, whenever you have an experience - like a conversation - a part of your brain called the prefrontal lobe stores that information in short-term memory. Then, another part of your brain called the hippocampus weaves those experiences together so they can be stored away as long-term memories. So the next day you remember “the party” as a whole instead of “smell of sweat,” “house music,” “Jen was there.”
But here’s the key part: storing these episodes in long-term memory requires special neurotransmitters. But your liquor shots prevent the neurotransmitters from working properly. So, instead of remembering the party, all you have is an incomplete or even empty file.
And the amount of alcohol in your system at the time influences how much you remember. Let’s say you’re a 73 kg adult man. And you’ve done 8 shots in 1 hour. Your blood alcohol content is probably around 0.2% by this point- more than twice the legal limit for driving a car. And your brain may still be able to store some memories. So you end up with “islands” of memories separated by missing sections. That’s called a fragmentary blackout, aka a “greyout” or “brownout”. But if you keep pounding those shots, it gets worse. Within the next half hour, you pound back another 4 shots. Now your blood alcohol content hits around 0.3%, and your hippocampus goes dark. And full amnesia sets in. This is called an en bloc blackout. And once you wake up, that entire night could be blank. Push your BAC much higher than that and…you might die.
And yet...your friends might not even realize you’re in the middle of a blackout, since the alcohol didn’t “delete” your long-term memories already safe in storage before the night began. So you can still carry on conversations and behave more or less like a typical person. To an extent. Blackouts aside, alcohol can still interfere with other regions of your brain including those responsible for reasoning and decision-making.
So during blackouts, people have crashed cars gotten into fights and committed -or been the victims of - sexual assaults. They just might not remember it.
That being said, not everyone gets blackouts. Your sex, body weight, and family history all play a roll. So that could explain why your friends recall the entire night despite downing just as much tequila. But it won’t save them from a wicked hangover the next morning.

Very normal, the amount of times I've woke up in a police cell from black out drunk. One night even stole my parents car, went for a 2 hour joy ride, crashed into a tree across the road from my own house.. lucky to be alive for the most part.. @Billy McCatty Powell thats comparing apples to oranges. cyanide is obviously much stronger than alcohol. there is no safe amount of cyanide, but there is a safe amount of alcohol. your odds of dying from alcohol poisoning from a couple glasses of wine are next to none.
@smoothbrained4channer976
@smoothbrained4channer976 2 жыл бұрын
@Billy McCatty Powell bro again with the comparing apples to oranges thing, hardcore drugs like heroin and meth cant be compared to weed or alcohol, the addictiveness of alcohol is next to nothing. its not manufactured to manipulate dopamine cells and give you an unparalelled (in nature), artificial high. i mean sure it can make you feel kinda funny and more confident but its not something that will get you hooked unless you have some addictive personality disorder; those are the only people who really get hooked on it, but they make up like 1% of the population. i tried alcohol a few times and not once did i have an unstoppable craving for it immediately after being drunk, like most people. heroin on the other hand is produced such that it makes you feel completely euphoric and gets you instantly hooked. Alcohol is completely safe to consume in moderation if you do not have a predisposition to addiction, no doubt.

Alcohol and cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. I could remember several years ago after divorce with my wife which brought me into my disastrous journey on Alcohol and cigarettes. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until a friend recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.

I would like to know from those who have solved PTSD and anxiety, if they have solved it definitively and how to understand what quantity of psilocybin to take and when, for how long. And can you really heal without having an addiction? Thanks to everyone for helping me understand, I want to understand if it's something that can help me solve the problem (I have c-ptsd)
@MichaelDavidson-qi7ts
@MichaelDavidson-qi7ts 4 ай бұрын
From my experience it really works excellently! It doesnt even need to be a full hit. With potent shrooms 2-3 small ones will still make a clear difference. It will be a few hour cosy rumbling moment around rest time, but afterwards its just calm and you feel amazing and gain your freedom. Psilocybin is different dudes, its the only "treatment" I would recommend to someone who genuinely wants to get better. There is no addiction, withdrawal, or negative side effects. It's just pure healing., far more effective than any anti-depressant. You can thank me later

I got black out drunk 5 years ago. One of the worst things to ever happen to me. I woke up in the street covered in blood. Someone or some people had beaten me to an absolute pulp, I have no idea who or why they did it. I must have been asking for it. Got a scar above my eye and on the back of my head. Bro I can relate to you. Although my story is a little different. I got mugged leaving a club and ended up concussed. They got my phone and wallet, so I had no way to call for a ride or anything. Walked around for 2 hours or so until I found a police station. And I didn’t even “come to” until about an hour into that time. I felt so violated and scared thinking about what must’ve happened. And I couldn’t recall anything. And I’m no small guy, I’m 6’3” and 215 lbs AND I train boxing. But none of that matters when you’re in a blacked-out stupor. I also struggle with alcohol. This happened last year, but I continued to drink. But I finally decided to kick it. As of today, I’m 2 weeks and 2 days sober.

This happened to me last night and it honestly scares me. I left the pub at around 2 am and just had to catch a bus about 200m away and I'd be home in about 15 minutes. But I can see through messages that I send when I got home that I spend 2 hours getting home. I originally thought that I had just walked all the way home and not gotten on the bus for whatever reason but then I checked my google maps timeline of where I had been the night before and nearly shat myself. I had taken 2 different buses which I definitely weren't supposed to get on and gotten off at random spots and just wandared around. And I have absolutely ZERO memory of this. It's so messed up to think about what the hell I was thinking in the moment. Also, at no point did I listen to music (I had headphones in my pocket) or check google maps or any other navigation app for direction. So I presumably just "traveled" for 2 hours without using my phone at any point. I've just gotten on these random buses, gone off at random points, walked around in places that I don't know of and then somehow made my way home with zero memory of how or why I did what I did. But I also have all my stuff with me, haven't fallen or anything and didn't throw up or feel sick so I presume I probably looked to be okay from an outsiders perspective.

Feel lucky I was okay and didn't get mugged or anything, my mom just so happened to be on her way to me to drop off some food she made and saw me wandering. When I got in the car I was all toxic and freaking out saying like where are you taking me I'm gona miss the bus. Guess when I entered back in my apartment I just checked the time and felt dumb but I was so blacked out I still had to wake up hungover to walk a mile to catch the bus to school in just afew hours smh.

The exact same thing happened to me last week. I apparently left a party at around 00.30 am and got home at 02.30. I don't remember anything before 02.15. It felt like I had woken up from a dream. I found myself wondering around my neighbourhood without using Google maps or anything. The strange part is, that the party I was at, took place, 6km away from my home. Therefore I had been walking over 6 km without using my phone for directions. It is so awful and I feel terrible about my decision. Thos is the 3rd time in 1 and a half months that I have experienced memory loss after a night of drinking. 1 month ago I even got into an accident during a blackout. I don't want to drink so much alcohol again, because I am scared of having another blackout experience.

I was super depressed eight years ago, girl cheated on me Anyway, I did six shots of Jack Daniels, downing them one after another That doesn't sound too bad, but my shots were in the form of scotch glasses The last complete thing I remember that night is I was trying to play beer pong - I had the ball in my hand and I let go. The night went blank from there Apparently I danced all night in the tavern I did the shots and played beer pong in, went over to a light post in front of another tavern and humped it for a while Then I went into that bar and tried to start a bar fight I have a partial memory of people trying to pick me up off the sidewalk outside that bar Another blank spot I'm stumbling around my lawn outside my door Another blank spot I wake up on my lawn, stumble into the door And then I wake up totally naked, covered in doritos crumbs and nacho cheese, and my own dorito and nacho cheese flavored vomit with the TV blaring the menu for the first season of Stargate SG1 on dvd

The first time I got blackout drunk was at 16. It became a regular occurrence in my 20s. Finally, at 25, I started going to therapy. Something my therapist said to me still runs through my head regularly at 28, "People who get drunk are trying to escape their reality. So the question to ask yourself is: What part of your reality are you running away from?" Moral of the story is: Binge drinking is NOT normal, even though our society makes it seem like it is. Blackout drinking is DEFINITELY NOT normal, and it can/will ruin your relationships.

Pain. Lots and lots of pain. But the pain is still there after.....Its a crazy cycle. I would sit down on a nightly basis and drink about a pint pint and a half (24 ounces) in about an hour. Just to escape. Wild shit. Hell I could (and would) play a little Russian Roulette. Walked into a cop shop. Pulled over and talked with a cop. All while black out. The memory coming latter verified by some evidence. A cops card. A text. Someone calling the next day. Im not proud.

I grew up in a muslim country, never even saw alcohol or consumed it before i was 18 and moved out of the country for college. needless to say, i had absolutely no knowledge or education when it came to alcohol. i first had a couple drinks in college my seocnd semester, bbut never enough to really feel anything, i was just trying out the taste and i was too scared to get caught drunk not being 21. but for spring break my freshman year, i travelled out of the country and was able to drink still with very poor knowledge so i kept downing shots of tequilla thinking i had to keep going until i felt really drunk. i downed 20 shots in one hour. that's probably the closest i've gotten to dying in my life. i was also black out drunk passed out in a pool of my own puke right on the road in hong kong where cars were literally driving on. if it wasnt for the people i was out with that night, i dont know what would have happened to me.

So basically after a hard night of partying, you go into a blackout. However this experience isn’t known until you wake up and don’t remember what happened, one moment your with friends taking shots, the next in bed. Just like you time traveled in the blink of a eye. My question is, if your brain were to fail or something along those lines where you stayed in a blacked out state of memory storage. Would you know? Would you have self awareness that your not remembering? Or what?

I'm a 27 year old who's never blacked out. I drank to the point of throwing up several times and I really don't see the point of continuing after that. It would only happen after the night is over and I'm in bed trying to get some sleep. My head would start spinning and I get a strong urge to puke. So I get up throughout the night to do that. I hardly ever drink since I don't get a buzz from it. If I drink too much, I throw up, not enough and I don't feel anything. Honestly, the only thing I like about alcohol is the flavor of certain drinks. Overall, the substance is completely boring to me. Also, alcohol is the only substance I've injured myself on. You lose your motor skills and coordination without realizing it. I've tripped while walking, missed steps coming down the stairs, landed on my back/face, and slammed my hand in doors. It's not a fun substance. I actually think it's quite dangerous. Especially how it wrecks a lot of lives and families.

Alcohol affects people in varying ways and to various degrees. For example, I have never been able to throw up on a night out, only on the day after, pretty much no matter how much I drink. I have only been blackout drunk once in my life, although I know a lot of people that can drink way less than me and not remember much the following day. I also know people that can drink way more than me and wake up fine the next day while I have a massive hangover. Also, I don't have an issue with tripping/injuring myself when I'm drunk either. I'm certainly less coordinated, but not that bad.

I remember most of the night until I took a triple shot of vodka and inhaled a huge puff off a marajuana pen. I was so happy and chill. But I forget everything afterwards except when I finally laid down to watch a show on the tv. (At friends house party) Then I just woke up. And man, the next day sucked hard. Since I was drunk and high, I didn’t think to drink water. I had to worst migraine of my life and felt sick and super sore all day. The one thing I learned is, drink water, a lot of it before passing out. XD

I know this is about alcohol blackouts, but there are also psychological blackouts. These can happen due to high stress. One cool thing with blackouts is that if they're short, your brain can take the before and after of the erased memory and assume what happened. You won't even know you had a blackout until you learn what actually happened. From experience, my brain took the before and after and assumed the least stressful event that still made sense. It's kind of like a detective in a movie figuring out a crime. They take everything they can find and put together a story. The story will never be a 1 to 1 copy, but it makes sense. If you guys have constant blackouts that aren't due to alcohol, make sure to talk to a doctor. It only happened to me once in a high stress environment, so I didn't talk to a doctor about it. One thing that makes me a little mad when researching blackouts is how much misinformation there is. A blackout is a memory gap, but so many sites refer to losing consciousness as a blackout. That's not a blackout, that's fainting.

@Bartô N Don't worry. He's not even close to black out drunk or anything. Hell he's probably the most responsible drinker of my friends old enough to drink. Usually I just insult his favorite video games or characters and watch him overreact.

Only had a blackout once. Nothing bad happen. But the felling of not knowing what you did last night can be frightening. I keept asking my friends what happen. It was first untill months after that night that I knew all the details. Even then I dont know completely what happen during the blackout.

I blame alcohol. Every time I got drunk, alcohol was involved 😂

Even if I only drank 4 beers that evening and I don't feel wasted at that moment, I still wake up with a black out on the couch the next morning. Not even a headache or anything ...

Once drank so much at a party and got black out drunk. Apparently i was yelling that I love this random girl and almost chocked on my vommit Then I remember my friends telling me I have to leave because the cops were coming. My friends threw me over a fence to escape but I only remember falling. I then remember waking up in a random house telling my friends mom "I'm fine" (no memory of getting there, one minute I'm falling the next my friends mom is checking if I'm alive). Next morning had the worst hangover, partial / if not no memory of the night and major embarrassment. 4 years later I still cringe thinking about it but crazy night dude. My friends ran from the police wile dragging my motionless body.

I was drinking with some friends and I had to puke last night. I kept drinking on an empty stomach (probably 2 beers) and then I suddenly woke up in a random hospital with my dad by my side. My last memory was approximately at 21.58 and after that I don't remember anything. I apparently went home earlier, around 22.10 or so. I don't know how but I probably cycled to the station, took the train to a wrong destination, puked in the trains. Then some train officers kicked me out and called an ambulance for me (all from what my parents told me). Then they kept me in a hospital till my dad arrived and there I woke up sober, not knowing wtf had happened. I still don't know if I was drugged or I blacked out from the alcohol, but I have a memory loss for approximately 4 hours, not a single second of recollection. As a man, I haven't been robbed luckily and I hope I haven't been raped. I'm really grateful that I'm still alive, it could have ended way worse. Also the fact that I'm not a woman makes me grateful, but that makes it even more bad to imagine what women have to endure. My head still feels light, it's now 24 hours, 22.25 and I just want to advise everyone, please look out for eachother. I made a mistake traveling alone and I'm happy that I can relive that mistake. Take care of your friends or fellow humans.

I never got blacked out before to the point where I thought I was invincible to drink however much I wanted. Last month I drunk 8 shots of some new tequila in less then one hour and had a partial/full blackout. I only remember 3 different things and nothing until waking up at 6 in the morning. I was with my girlfriend at the time but we were at her grandparents house and there are people there that don’t like me. Well now I’ve had a fear that I’ve been raped that won’t go away, because the day after and since that day she’s been saying weird things to me and I’m not sure what to do

When I was 17 me and my friend finished 3 liters of the cheapest wine available at the grocery store. After that I woke up on a bus bench on the other side of town. To this day I have no idea what I did or how I got there

This is so scary and why I don't drink more than a small glass of wine or beer always with a meal, and no more than once or twice a month.

One of the best way to avoid this problem, is to avoid alcoholic or at least only go for very small intake
