That looks like a pretty narrow course. You could easily get stuck behind a group while the winning break gets away. If I had Dan's power I'd want to get out in front of the pack right from the gun too, cyclocross style.

Start of the race is often the time it splits. Agree it isn't often the winning move, but you have to be in front or you could end up in a second or third group with awesome legs but nothing to be raced for.

It's not unusual for a trained athlete to show up to a race for the first time and demolish the field. I've seen this happen at collegiate races when triathletes from the same university showed up to the home race to race C or D categories and went solo from the flag drop. They also trained with us on Wednesday worlds, so they were just as strong as A or B riders. Still, and not to sound more discouraging, those power numbers and crit racing on a windy day are quite impressive. The weekly race series in Britain is fun!

Yes, had a high level cross country runner get on a bike for a 40 minute crit. He wasn't fast, turned like a duck yet we couldn't maintain his remaining power. Guy got caught out in the final sprint and finished 5 of 40. Said he'd never do it again, too scary.

Just for info - cat 4 crits like this one are the EASIEST crits we have in England. There is no cat 5. For someone trying to get into crit racing there are ridiculously high barriers to entry fitness wise!!! My FTP of 240 got me dropped after 1 lap in the last crit I did

Once upon a time I had an experience where a magazine writer/nationally ranked triathlete jumped in the Cat IV field on a weekend stage race (I'm talking about you Tom D.). He didn't bury us too bad in the TT, but jumped with three laps to go in the afternoon crit and rode away from the field. (late 80's when we had 90+ riders in Cat IV races) We marked him on the road race next day so he couldn't get away, but neither could anyone else. A strong athlete is a strong athlete, and if they race their strengths & train their weaknesses, they will do well. Fortunately for the rest of that season's racing, USCF mercifully quickly upgraded him to III then II.

For an endurance athlete, triathlete or not, power peaks are a non-issue because recovery is quick enough. Plenty of shots available. Problems start if you're sustaining a high power for a long time. Basically they need to know what power is sustainable and keep it at that level with a few peaks and valleys rather than keep it constant above sustainable.

as someone that raced triathlons and moved to crit racing, it took a while. power is not the issue, its the technical ability. cycling is so different to triathlon. triathlon is just a time trial with 3 sports, there is not racing. cycling is actual racing. why i switched after 30 or so races it became boring.
@Second247

Aren't there sprint- and olympicdistances which are acutally very close to crit. Drafting allowed and you have to race it like crits.
@morosis82
@morosis82 Жыл бұрын
@@Second247 there is one series, ITU I think, that allow drafting. Sprint distance can be more fun even with no drafting in that regard because there are just more people around as the race is much shorter. It's not unusual in a half or iron distance event to be out there sort of on your own for a reasonable distance.
@tommasopuccini3688
@tommasopuccini3688 Жыл бұрын
@@morosis82 ITU doesn't exist anymore, now called World Triathlon, and is reserved for elite racing. Local draft legal races don't really exist in triathlon because most athletes aren't technically proficient, and there's big gaps between people out of the water. I've done WT races and they are actual racing, because everyone is strong in all 3 disciplines so you generally have large groups on the bike

Professional triathlete? They know how to ride in groups, the train in road bikes and the olympics triathlon you are allowed to draft.. I think he knew he was sandbagging and did the right thing, push everyone. I actually liked how he raced given he is sandbagging. If he is just a random triathlete man, he was pro watts, and still is sandbagging.
