Welcome back to the mill!
In today's video we are going to be continuing our series where we take a look at different types of logs after they have been aged for a year!
Today we are sawmilling some poplar logs!
We want to give a huge shoutout to Solomon, he helps us so much editing some of the videos. Be sure to check out his channels, he puts in an amazing amount of effort for our channel as well as his own.

Great video ! I have cut some white poplar a few years back & I'm in pretty dry climate here, The only way to get the color is let it get really wet dry out a bit get really wet not on the ground but close to it in the shade & piled 3-4 logs high then the middle ones never really dry out that's why they color but lose the strength, I have some that have been down 3 years but piled in the sun I cut last summer & still pretty much white no rot on the outside at all, Makes some awesome fence planking :)

It almost looks like you guys know what you are doing! Nice work. Question regarding Black Walnut please: We cut a couple very large trees down over the winter and they are up off the ground on 4x4's but getting wet from rain and starting to sprout all along the top. I need to get them covered back up. They are 27-30' diameter. Massive logs. Straight. I had to cut them into 12' length so I could move them with my equipment. Is this wood going to be ok for lumber? It's already 5 months cut. Also, what would be a good thickness to cut it for some basic furniture building if I can find someone to do it? How much should I expect to pay someone to cut it? I can deliver it to them. Sorry for all the questions : )

Black Walnut will be just fine outside. Do not cover with anything it will hold the damp in Let it get wet and then dry out . This for logs not Lumber Cut into 5/4 & 9/4 boards and maybe 4x4s for table legs average sawing coat is going to be $650.00 per thousand board foot higher if you have someone mobil milling Thx for watching and commenting 👍

I've heard that sweet gum benefits from sitting for a year or so in that it will dry straighter. Don't know from personal experience. I'd be interested to see for sure.

How is durability of poplar for siding in that climate (SE of United States the temps, moisture and condensation in buildings, not to mention insects I know is different to what climate does to timber buildings up north in colder and damper environments). I came a lot from mechanical, ventilation and plumbing trades. So I understand why mechanical systems in your climates actually help to maintain integrity of building services. Anyhow, I plan to focus on poplar timber I harvested, as a material for saltwater lure fabrication (balsa is the material of choice owing to extreme lightness, but popular isn't bad). It gets feather weight light with age, and almost brittle like. It doesn't mush like pines do. And that knocking audio quality of the poplar time (kind of like that quality of wooden musical instruments has a quality in fishing lures made from poplar, that balsa for example can't match). In fact, few woods have that loud, hollow knock like the poplar does. I think it's all the air gaps left from sucking up moisture to grow so fast. Like toast gone rock hard, if you don't eat it a day later. I'd imagine a structure clad with poplar siding has a nice sound to it when rain falls, or a light breeze blows. My guess. We don't do much wood siding at all in mild, oceanic climates or islands. As life span is too short (we go with stone, masonry etc).

Yes, Poplar can be used as a siding material. However, it will need painted or stained to do well outside. Thx for watching and commenting

@@BeardedLumber My experience runs over a few decades dealing with teak hardwood casement windows in colder, wet, oceanic climates. So I know just what timber maintenance can look like. One could argue that wider, flatter, less complicated siding surfaces are a bit easier. As sanding and treating the casement windows eats time. Hotter, dryer climates could be equally as harsh to timber I reckon. We don't have as much direct UV light on our facades, that is a plus. But what happens to cedar in western Atlantic coastal climates, when it became trendy to put exposed cedar cladding on office and public building before (the cedar was meant to turn silver and age gracefully). Well, that notion came from Spain to British Isles, when we got rich in northern European countries. And now there's a lot of black cedar cladding about, that looks like it was left on the ground for too long. Even though it was installed on sides of trendy architectural facades. All the designers went on a junket to Barcelona and Madrid once, and brought this bright idea back to Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin.
