How anyone could trust a car to drive itself is beyond me. I'm barely able to trust my alarm clock to wake me up if I have something important to do in the morning. Not the first time I've heard about people getting killed letting the car drive itself.
@kennethmatthew3453Ай бұрын
Problem with most non survivable accidents was because of idiots who would have been better off with "self driving" technologies. I doubt you'd be saying the same thing if a close family member or anyone close was ended by a distracted or intoxicated driver. As a trucker I'd never trust a self driving truck but at the same time I believe self driving technologies may one day be 200% safer than "most" drivers although those of us who are actually "responsibly safe" drivers "few and wide" no amount of technology truly beats a real safe/defensive driver who never text and drive or drink etc. The person in this horrible accident had it coming self driving or not and is just one of thousands of self made victims every year via phone while driving = possibly ending yourself or someone else. As a trucker I trust self driving tech beside me allot more than idiots who don't know how to put their phones down nearly/stupidly almost driving right under the trailer/failure to maintain their lanes.
@tcwhite0104Ай бұрын
@@kennethmatthew3453 self driving cars will NEVER be safe. You need a human in charge period regardless what type of driver they are. Autonomous driving depends on the road conditions and the stripes painted on the surface. I am not ever going to trust anyone or type of vehicle except myself.
@kennethmatthew3453Ай бұрын
@@tcwhite0104 I feel the same way but at the same time I still uphold my argument a self driving vehicle is still allot safer then a speeding drunk/and or distracted person deep into texting on their phones/not paying enough attention. If "properly implemented" self driving technologies would save thousands of lives every year and this would also cause many areas to become even more vastly overpopulated. What you say is even true about automation systems in planes as thousands of lives has been lost related to auto tech on planes which either didn't function right or was misunderstood by pilots. Either way to properly implement truly safe self driving tech it would require some reconstruction on every inch of roadway in all the states which would take many years or decades.

While playing video games while driving is absolutely idiotic, the main criticism of the NTSB's report on this accident to Tesla was that the name, marketing and ui of "autopilot" was misleading. Wall appears to be a structural retaining wall, supporting an on ramp, with a noise wall extension on top. As far as the impact attenuator goes, the DOT has specialized crews that make these repairs. But remember, they are fixing them all over the district and a spot like that would likely be only accessible at night. So, 11 days is not out of line for a repair. I would think that some temporary measure would have been placed (water filled barrier, yellow sand drums, etc.) there, but this is not going to afford the same protection as the permanent solution. So, you have to schedule major lane closures along with the repair crew and make a nighttime shift change for the crews. This also assumes they have all the necessary parts due to the wide variety of these devices that have developed over the years. One last thing, states are normally limited to a very small amount of liability in such cases. My state has a $300,000 cap by statute. Great work on the vid!!!

Maybe the California DOT will just have to shut down lanes when accidents happen until they can repair it regardless of how much it delays traffic as if traffic wasn't bad enough in California's major cities.

I agree with a lot of these comments. Yes he should have been paying attention but if Tesla has a self driving feature and it fails on you and steers you into a wall wouldn’t Tesla be technically responsible for his death? I’ve seen videos of people sleeping in Teslas on long road trips with these self driving features. I remember Uber got sued when they were using driverless cars picking up passengers. Those sensors go bad and caused so many accidents. If I don’t see someone driving a car I’m not getting in .
