What Happens When You Leave Carrots In The Ground 30 Extra Days?

We left carrots in the ground almost twice as long as their maturity which was about 70 days total. We wanted to see what would happen, and the reward was well worth the risk. Check out our new clothing line! http:www.freshpickedapparel.com

I picked mine when I could no longer see the leaves because the grasshoppers ate them all. My carrots take much longer than seeds say. I have actually planted in spring, threw grass clippings over them to over winter and picked next spring. Zone 4

I planted a whole package of carrot seeds one fall that I had gotten at Walmart for 10 cents on closeout. Didn't think that they would even grow but made 4 small rows anyway and was actually quite surprised at how many nice carrots I harvested. I don't even know what kind they were but the following spring I was rewarded with another small harvest from ones I missed the previous fall. Weathered (pun intended) the winter temperatures and were quite sweet and crunchy. Best 10 cents I ever spent.

Don't worry about maturation date; carrots are biennials. You can leave them in the ground and harvest them right up until the ground freezes (Thanksgiving for us). The carrots will get sweeter as they enter winter since they use sugar as an kind of antifreeze. As an experiment, try leaving some over the winter and harvest them before greenup next spring.

This is such fun watching you pull carrots! You're so happy! It's one of my favourite things to do in the garden, each one is a surprise! I planted Atomic Red, Scarlet Nantes and Rainbow Mix. The Rainbows grow white, yellow, light orange, dark orange, red, purple. I didn't mix up my varieties. I put little signs to know which was where. I leave half my carrots in until after a couple light frosts,~mid September. Makes them even sweeter.

I find carrots easy to grow. The only issue I've had is how to get them to germinate. I just sow a lot of seeds in my well-watered raised beds with a thick layer of compost then cover them with old carpet or layers of cardboard then check them after two weeks to see if any have germinated. If they have, I simply remove the cover then keep them watered. I don't pay any attention to the info on the seed packets. I just feel around to see if there are any reasonably-sized carrots and pull them. Small ones remain until they're "usable". I've even left some in the garden when the soil was rock-hard frozen. When the soil thaws, I can harvest even more. I find it that simple. Don't obsess in the garden.

Hi Luke. Thank you for your videos. Their wonderful! Carrots: This year 8/08/22 Has been a weird year for us. Z: 7A, lower Westchester, NY. Carrots are slow this year. It's now 147 days from sowing 4 varieties, (50 - 80 days to maturity). Their now still smallish, but big enough to eat. My longest is St. Valery, are 4 - 6 in. long. (definitely not 10-12!). Different subject, we had 3 days in mid 94's May 10 through 12. Everything BOLTED! Even though the lettuce got to 3-4 ft. high, kept the flowers trimmed, the flavor and texture didn't change! We had delicious lettuce up to last week! In mid-late July they stopped growing new leaves. I though I was going to lose the Broccoli, but it's still producing. abit, smaller heads. Thank you for the Giant Crimson tomato. It's 9 ft. tall, loaded with green tomatoes. The 2 almost ripe ones disappeared a few days ago. Have a grey catbird problem. Started last year, & sprayed with Cayanne pepper spray. Doesn't work this year! Fortunately, I grew 6 varieties of hot peppers last year and froze a lot of them. They ranged from Jalapeno to Carolina Reaper. Today I made Gardener Scotts Hot Pepper and Garlic cocktail. I used 2 of each variety! 🥵👹 I grow 20 varieties of tomatoes, 20 plants on 9 ft. string trellises. My beds are 4' x 10'. I'm also in the process of putting a roof over the garden. I am waiting with bated breath to taste the Giant Crimson!!! Thank you, Luke.

I look at the tops and when I see them emerging, I add a bit of soil on top to cover them - they do plump up when you give them extra time and coverage. Mine are planted in tight rows with irrigation on the mound sides, the foliage touches each other on all sides blocking out all sun to the ground. This year I did a peat moss compost mix for the mound, by keeping it moist all season - this seems to be my best crop to date.

I harvest and thin at the same time, which means going from baby carrots to bigger carrots through the season. However, thinning late can on occasion mean they grow a bit too close and end up hugging each other so I need to take a cluster of small carrots. My ground is actually not loose but I still find that my carrots are usually straight unless they intertwine or hit a stone. I don't water much though, so the carrots have to go down to find moisture.

Hi. I’m an MI gardener too(I’m obviously not THE MI gardener). Fun fact: Your shop is not that far away. I live in a city near Detroit.

Luke, thank you as always. In this Video, I noticed for the first time the rain barrel behind you. Forgive me if you have put out a prayer video on this previously but I have not seen it. On that note, thank you for a previous video you did on watering; I found it educational and implemented it. Do you use the water from the rain barrel for your plants? If so, what do you use to transfer the water? If you do use the water for the plants, can you offer advice and considerations when buying a rain barrel(s). Many thanks,

I just check my carrots. Spring takes longer than the pack says usually. While summer, with good watering, they can go a little faster. I did notice some that were planted in April, tried to go to seed. (scarlet nantes seed from Walmart) Luckily it was only a few, but the whole 50 sq ft had to come out and go in cold storage so not to loose the crop to bolting. FYI variety Mokum is a delicious, and fast variety with little core down the middle, none if picked as baby carrots. They have treated me very well in both cool and warm weather. If left a little long, they can get rather big in loose soil, and they have never bolted on me.

I usually leave my carrots in until I want to eat them. I know it’s time when one of them starts to prepare to flower. I planted carrots in October last year and was harvesting them until June this year, and they were still good! And most were way bigger then in this video, Nantes, chantenay, Danvers, etc.
