Aldis originated in Germany where artificial coloring is banned and also brought the concept to the US Aldi. The coloring comes from natural food sources such as red cabbage and beets

One missing ingredient in generic foods is "marketing cost." As much as 30% of a product's price can be due to advertising, promoting and marketing expenses. They don't spend one cent advertising these generics so you get to pay less for them.

Here's a few ways aldi reduces cost: Making the packaging smaller, Not hiring as many employees as a big grocery store, only having a few selections of the same thing (ex. They sell one organic ketchup and one regular, no other brands), only stocking as much as they need to eliminate waste, not having plastic bags, ect. :)

I love Aldi! Their gourmet shit around Christmas time is fab. Lobster tails, apps, cheesecake platters, icecream cakes.

We love Aldi! Our son has a red food dye intolerance, when we found out their products contained no artificial dyes we switched to them. We now prefer them over name brands, especially their pop tarts 😂

When Aldi first came to our area, my hubs was sold on everything. I, however, was a name brand shopper and was not going to be swayed. Or so I thought. The Aldi fig newtons, the Aldi bean, and bacon soup and the wheat thins had pretty much won me over but when my husband brought home the Aldi Oreos and the Aldi yellow mustard, I was a FULL-FLEDGED CONVERT! I thought NOBODY could match Oreos and French’s mustard but Aldi can!

Those capn colors are alarming now.

I know it's not the same as their foods, but I bet you they do the same thing with other products. A few years ago I ran a diaper line in a private label diaper factory. We made Aldi, Seventh Gen, Fisher-price, Walmart, Meijer, Kroger..... Aldi by far were the highest quality diaper we made, and Aldi's quality testing was enough to have corporate shaking in their boots when their private testers walked in the door.

A lot of times the off-brand or "store brand" foods are from the same factory, sometimes with a missing ingredient and cheaper quality packaging, so it's cheaper. As a college student, I ate a lot of "store brand" things and found tons like taste identical, sometimes better than the real stuff. And way cheaper. Some are duds though, like ketchup. I need my Heinz!

I used to be a machine operator at Hostess and the cream filling, icing and swirl are definitely done by machine!

I had an interview there and they explained that they manufacture their own products/brands so it cuts out the middle man so they don’t have to hike up prices. And since ingredients are probably slightly altered (maybe even better at Aldi) they can’t technically sue.

I can remember when I was a kid, around 60 years ago in my hometown in Germany the first Aldi opened. Back then the shops looked like storage halls, everything on pallets, prices on cardboard sheets above. Main products offered at that time were household items that a) every household needed, and b) could be stored for a long time without a) being refrigerated, b) frozen, and had a very long shelf life. Products I can remember (I was 5 at that time) are: sugar, salt, flour, matches, pasta, all in paper boxes. Canned items like sausage, meat, kraut, cabbage, soup, carrots, peas. Glasses with pickles, onions, peeled potatoes, everything else you would expect. No fresh items at all, no frozen or refrigerated items, nothing fancy, no special offers. No brand items at all, boxes only said: Salt 500 gram. Sugar 500 gram. Flour Type XX 500 gram. etc., etc. No producer, no fancy picture, no nothing. No air conditioning either. No fridges, no freezers, poor lighting. Very few racks, most stuff on pallets only, no boxes at all. At that time Aldi was regarded as a shop for the poor only. But they proceeded,, got better shops, better / more products, much more items. The best of all is: they kept prices down, Aldi in Germany is regarded the cheapest (when buying the same stuff) at a comparably high quality ( Lidl is 2.). Interesting fact: when the founders of Aldi (Nord and Süd), brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht were alive, they were the richest and second richest person in Germany, followed by Dieter Schwarz, founder of Lidl as the third.

Hi...just watched this video. Having worked in production, I can tell you that the companies that make the national brands are actually the ones making the Aldi's ones as well. They produce the items under the Aldi's name with their specifications.

Back in 1980 I worked for a winery one summer. They also made grape juice. One day I was helping put cases of juice on pallets after the juice was jarred and boxed. After about an hour the lables changed, I asked the person I was helping what was going on. They said we don't only make our brand we make other brands as well. So you can have one company making two or three different brands made with the same product.

The major companies produce store brands as well.

Vivian, when I lived in Fredonia NY I worked @ a place called Red Wing, they made and canned things like Welch's jams and jellies, Miracle Whip salad dressing, and the honey bear honey. When it came time to run "store brand" items, all they did was switch out the containers and the labels. Very same product, just different packaging.

My husband worked at a plant that made cereal for several brands. Slightly different variations of the same recipes on the same machines for Walmart, Target, Post and Aldi's. It's all pretty much the same exact stuff. Hint: the stuff they made for Walmart has considerably more sugar and salt in it than for other brands.

Vivian as a German I can tell you that Aldi makes deals with the firms themself. They make the expensive and the "cheap" ones and sell both. This is how it works for Aldi since it started out over here in Germany in 1946.

I worked for Georgia Pacific for years. Back when you had all the smaller local grocery stores, we ran lots of different private label Toilet Tissue, Paper Towel, and Facial Tissue. The same machinery ran it all, the paper the product was made with the same starting paper. All we did was change the plastic wrap and the finished case they were being shipped it. We made Costco brand was a different paper. We ran Sparkle and Brawny also.

Things that are better and considerably cheaper at UK Aldi: Mature Cheddar Cheese German Pilsner Fresh Orange juice Cocoa powder Honey DIY tools.

Some are knocked off and some are “private labeled” I happened to know personally that many of the Clancys chips are actually made by Frito lay. I also know that the Dakotas beans are Bush’s beans. There are quite a few other products there that are private labeled meaning they are the expensive brands who have put different names and things on their packaging so they can ask less money and sell them there in mass quantities. But somethings are just plain knock off. I shop there all the time and I have a friend that works at Corp who has told us some of the secrets. Also, in some cases, let’s say Red Bull, would private label as RED but they’ll change one ingredient to make it just a little different so consumers won’t know. But most times, they just don’t care. I’m afflicted to the diet peach tea. I’m so used to it now, I don’t miss the Snapple or paying a lot more! So you MUST try the Aldi “Oreo double stuff” omg...identical!! Better actually. Oh and the “Girl Scout” Cookies they sell...holy moly!!! Like one third of the price! Identical.
