The brokenness in his eyes in the cafeteria scene when they first meet is so pivotal. You can see the darkness that was passed onto his son. Alone, doesn’t fit anywhere really. Amazing film.

I’ve only seen this film once, but I remember everything about it. Incredibly haunting.

Another visual ghost that was really cool was when Avery Cross went to Romina's house to give her the money the cops stole from Jason's cradle, how he stopped her in front of the car and begged her to accept the money was almost identical to how Luke did that before, and it's crazy that it's actually the same money. I love how this one makes a paralellism between Avery Cross and Luke and how they are so alike in some way (despite being literally the opposite kind of people, a cop and a thief), both did bad things but are good people, have a good heart and good values, it's just a beautiful detail.

Ryan gosling deserved an Oscar for this movie. every scene he's in was performed brilliantly, whether he was robbing a bank, opening up about his father, breaking down, goofing around with Eva Mendes..etc. He made u empathize with hi character and feel his pain and regret. This movie is a melancholic masterpiece that everyone should watch.

Movie broke my damn heart, especially the scene where he gives his son ice cream. Such a sad but beautiful scene, but then I really felt for the stepfather too as he was truly there for him his whole life. You could see the sadness in him when the boy inquired about his father. Derek Cianfrance is one hell of a talent that makes these great films about REAL relationships. I saw this one as the old phrase of “the sins of the father are visited upon the child” as both boys inherited the weaknesses of their fathers. I felt it had an ambiguous ending in terms of how the sons will carry on after traumatic experience. Will they grow and change? Or will the cycle repeat?

This scene right here 5:17 broke me, specially when she starts crying and they way it's shown. At that moment I knew this movie was going to be something on another whole level.

One of the most affecting movies I’ve seen in my lifetime. My father was murdered when I was 6, and I have no memories of him. The sins of the father theme throughout the movie hit me hard.

Watched this film when I was 13.. fell asleep on HBO or Showtime, woke up to it playing.. gave me chills.. rewatched it a few more times as I got older, really powerful. Really brought me into Cinema, the way directors drag you through a film and make you connect to it in a way.. I felt this film..

Also, what I found notable was that like in the opening act, 'Handsome Luke', is the star of the show, the 'hero' one might say, and it has been inflicted on our minds multiple times through the dialogues that Avery is the 'hero'. But who made him one? Luke. He was then hero, like he was one in the cage initially, a life he leaves behind in redemption.

Holy crap this was such a phenomenal film essay. I have loved this movie for years but didn't realize just how deep so much of it goes in tying all of the themes together. Visual Ghosts is brilliant. Thank you for this.

Rewatched it again today and I couldn't even finish it, such a heavy film. So heartbreaking. The visual ghosts are everywhere on the rewatch. What a great video about a great movie.

This is my favorite movie in the world.. I love how the “visual ghosts” are portrayed. Generational failures, but also a bond that sticks despite memories and pictures that can be lost.

Mike Patton's soundtrack to the film adds a lot to it, that's actually the reason I watched it in the first place, since I am a Mike Patton fan. I walked away thinking it was one of the best movies I had ever seen, even though I couldn't really explain why.

This movie made me buy my first motorcycle, a dual sport because the way you can drive them, nothing can stop you, that's what I love about riding.

I first saw this movie without knowing much about it. I knew Ryan Gosling was in it, he rides a motorcycle, and it was well reviewed by those who had seen it, but that was about it. Knew nothing about the plot. That transition from Gosling to Cooper was so seamless. At first I didn’t realize it was Bradley Cooper. This film hit me in a few ways. My Dad only met his Dad a few times, and went on to rebel on motorbikes. Later he became a white collar professional, but was often too busy to spend time. Really appreciate how the characters are threaded and remembered throughout. You broke this down beautifully!

I've had this film as one of my top picks for a long time, as someone who lost their father at a young age, the entire movie hits home with the ideas of legacy, trying to live up to expectations, and losing yourself in your fathers mistakes. He is like a ghost I see everywhere

The casting was very well done in this movie. I mean Dane DeHaan's performance in this was outstanding. Every scene where he had to look confused as to what was going on or if he should do something or not do something, his nonverbals were great. Even Emory Cohen played his character very well. The casting was just well done.

This is a very nice essay! One of the connections I thought was interesting was Luke's friendship with Robin and Jason's friendship with AJ. You mentioned AJ beating up Jason mirroring Luke getting shot by Avery, but I also saw it as being similar to Robin cutting up Luke's bike. This prompts both Luke and Jason to get a gun, point it at their friend and move into their respective climactic scenes with Avery. Overall, this movie is one of my all time favorites!

I remember seeing the advert for this movie and thinking "Great, Drive in another American state.". Was a good lesson in curbing my cynicism when it comes to movies(not the first, won't be the last. Guess the usual trends in movie making over a batch of years reinforces such bad habits till I find something that breaks the spell, but I do try to avoid it.). Thanks for reminding me why I loved the movie and adding further nuance I missed on my first and only viewing. Will definetly need to revisit this gem.

I think it's underrated because it's simply sad story. There's no winners. And mainly stories without a winner isnt considered worthwhile for general public.

I noticed the visual similarity/mirroring in how Jason got away on a bike after the theft of the pharmacy, but didn't notice the same tank top and show of riding the bicycle. But not the others. The view of Luke looking at something , and it lines up perfectly with looking at his son, that's amazing.

WOW! That was well done. This is one of my favorite movies since it aligns with hardships in my life and you made it mean all the more to me.

I have watched this movie three times, and it trows its punches just as hard on the third watch as the first. I was jarred by the shifting of protagonist, but not for more then a few minutes and then you just continue the journey/character study. I find this movie to feel incredibly real. The long run time can be a bit jarring to, but it is definitely more than worth it.

A lot of people criticize TPBTP because of Gosling’s early exit from the film and it’s meandering in the third act. Initially, I agreed with this point of view and still understand people who feel this way. However, I couldn’t get this film out of my head because of how it calls back without holding your hand as most directors would do. Also there are so many small nuances that can be overlooked throughout the film that show the similarities between Gosling’s son and Cooper’s son. I think the third act is needed and despite it being slower-paced, it makes the storytelling of this movie and ultimate message of the film stand more powerfully so than if it would’ve been cut shorter. 10/10 film for me.

Something changed on me while I was blindly watching this film without any knowledge or have seen any cut scene or trailer. I was on Ryan gosling filmography binge. I was working while it was playing on the side of my screen and when the "bang" happened on the police scene, my heart shattered and actually got real curious of the whole movie, like literally abandoning what current work I was doing. As mentioned by comments here, I only watched it once but it sure did had a long last effect on me even to this day. So thank you, you had a great presentation of what I actually felt and what I've hugely appreciated about the film with your words. Keep it up!
