I eat all of those foods you mentioned. I am a carb lover and always will be. But what folks do wrong is the amount of fat in their diet. I know it's now fashionable to be eating high fat diets these days. Wrong idea. Fats are what create diabetes. Not carbs. I know it sounds counter intuitive but that's the honest scientific truth. I won't go into details here but you can watch my diabetes reversal videos where I go into all of that. Anyway bottom line: reduce your fat consumption to less than 30 gm a day and you will never have to fret about your blood sugar again. That's all you have to do. I like to keep it simple@@7x779

As a Beekeeper, I would like to mention the following. Raw Honey is actually low Gi. Commercially bottled Honey is superheated to allow the producer to flow through pipes when bottling the honey. Super heating Honey, renders the natural complex sugars to simple sugars. So the Honey is converted from Low GI to High Gi. The type of Honey has nothing to do with how it performs in your test Dr. It depends upon if it is Raw or Supper heated Honey. You can do an simple test to tlsee if your Honey has been super heated. Drizzle a teaspoon of Honey into a glass of water, without moving the spoon. If it is Raw Honey, will sink to the bottom of the water & form a mound with a peak. Supper heated Honey has been super heated, it will form a spreading blob, on the bottom of the glass. Bees make Manuka Honey when they forage certain types of flowers. Manuka Honey has the highest Peroxide level of all Honey, this is why it is used to treat cuts & infected skin.

I envy you to being a bee keeper!🤗 Never heard of Manuka honey or Manuka "anything!" Now I have an idea at least. But what you explained about raw or processed honey makes sense. It seems processing greatly changes things and not for the better. Mostly degradation. My last bottle I got in store. I will want to get raw from a bee keeper. I use to. Gosh! Never knew that the flavor and color was SO different depending on the kind of flowers from what plants they forage from!! My favorite was "Gulberry"!! One thing I discovered was certain flavor foods, like ginger actually flavored ginger in the honey, almost like the ginger flavor was added. But it was not! To me that was rare!! Bees are precious 😍 Keep up the bees!!

@Dr Joe TV, Thank you for your reply & indeed question, which everyone asks & I love bee curious people, as I know I can give the person a few gems about bees & show even a 67 yr old lady can keep bees, with the right knowledge. Like most people, I was quite anxious regarding stings, at first. To open a hive & be in close proxmitity of 50,000 bees is quite daunting Its why I studied bees for 12 months proir to situating my 2 hives in the garden. I would wear kid gauntlets with a full suit. Yes, beekeppers do get stung, however, once we learn to manage our bees, the chance of multiple stings are lowered. These days, I don't wear the gauntlets, If it's a quick check, I just wear a hat & head veil & may wear some disposable gloves, as it's not good to get fingers sticky with honey, if the gloves get honey on them, it's easy to change to a fresh pair. Bees sting for different reasons. It is the ultimate act of defence as their stinger is left in the person they stung, & they die a painful death. It is in the interest of the beekeeper to keep their movement slow & gentle, like in Tai Chi. If the queen is old or not laying well, the bees may be agitated & become nasty. At that point we re-queen. So it is, the Queen predicts the attitude of the whole hive. Also the weather, the season, the amount of potential & nectar within 5klm radius of the hive, affects the bees mood. The ultimate mistake is to cast a shadow on the hive entrance..they will not go easy on anyone, that is why we stand behind or to the side when working the hives. Trust me, I could go on all day...

Why not just see it as something that is constructive and therefor keeps your practice sharp and refined... Accountability is a good thing. Imagine everyone just worshiped your video for being amazing and perfect. That would be boring and unhelpful to you in keeping you honest and cutting edge. Real scientists welcome constructive criticism. Let's keep the debate lines open and healthy. I'm sure you can too Dr Joe.

Hello Dr. Joe; thank you for your test and effort. The outcome is not surprising; honey and all other sugary foods that lack fiber cause a quick spike in blood sugar. Three things come to mind from decades of my experience: 1- Honey can prevent diabetes if consumed in little doses everyday long before diabetes shows up. The explanation is that honey is a strong medicine ; whereas sugar slows down the metabolism, honey speeds it up. 2. The body benefits much from the neutralization of honey since the production of insulin is different from that needed to neutralize table sugar. Enzymes, such as diastase, invertase, glucose oxidase, catalase, glucosylceramidase, α-amylase, α-glucosidase, β-glucosidase, and proteases, amino acids, the “building blocks” of protein. B vitamins (B6, thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid) Organic acids, all block the damage by the insulin. 3- If a diabetic begins to regularly eliminate other sources of junk food and harmful sugars from their diet and begins to consume honey in very little amounts, 2-3 times per day, honey may eventually be able to treat diabetes.

@@willmitchell2553 No, I cant find any "hate" mail either. People arguing isn't hate, it's debate. And there IS a legitimate problem with this experiment - it isn't science. Consuming the honey in a fasted state caused a FAR more dramatic spike than would have occurred in another situation. Dr Joe explained that he did so to remove "confounding factors", but the fasted state WAS a confounding factor. Because it greatly exaggerated the result. He would need to repeat the experiment in every detail with the same duration of fast beforehand, but using e.g. oatmeal. Then bread. And so on. They might take an extra 30 minutes to release their sugars, but research suggests they would deliver a pretty comparable spike to the one he got from the honey, providing he adhered to the same protocol and fasting period. White rice might have been even higher. Damn, even protein can spike blood sugar in a fasted state.

Recently, I began eating about a teaspoon of ground ginger every day. The notion is anti-cancer. When I first read about that it was suggested to mix the ginger and perhaps a teaspoon of wild honey in water and drink it. I chose to just add the honey to the dry ginger, stir it up, eat it. I bought a pound of what seemed to be good ginger, so eating it this way was accepting a powerful taste. I eat few other sweets. 75 years old next week.

It took me 3 days of zero carb, and I seriously mean absolutely zero carbs, to get my glucose down below 100. And it should actually be 86 or less from the studies I read. So if you're serious about reversing your diabetes you may want to consider that Oh and by the way, at first, I did try cutting out refined sugars and carbs, kept reducing carbs, went low carb, and at least for my body that had been used to eating carbs its whole life, it wasn't enough I had to cut out all carbs, and from what I read, if you're of a baby boomer generation it's something that you may have to do for months and years to begin to reverse what all those Decades of hard carb diet has done to your body Lastly, look up my zero carb life on here, Kelly hogan, incredible testimony

I started to get my two middle toes from right foot numb a few months ago. I usually think that every negative symptom is from the food or drink we have. Recently I started to get numb fingers in the middle of my left hand. I have been drinking two mugs of hot cacao with honey every morning and tea with honey also. All in all up to 4 teaspoons of honey a day. No other sweets other than fruit. So last Monday I started to experiment on myself. I gave up the honey too. I felt cutting pains through my head for a couple of days. Witdrawal symptoms. Monday the numbness in my toes came later from the remaining honey in my body. Since Tuesday no more numbness. Today, sunday when I had two dates I felt a bit of discomfort in my toes. My body is telling me to stop all sugar except fresh fruit if I want to keep as healthy as I have been. Thank you Doctor !

The British Diabetes Foundation does not discourage diabetics from oranges as long as you only eat a portion of it and separate your fruit consumption to different parts of the day if you want to eat more fruit, thereby not raising blood sugar too highly in one sitting. Strawberries and other fruit such as berries, and even kiwi fruit are all considered safe to be eaten by a diabetic. A lot of sugar substitutes do also raise blood sugar levels & some studies suggest when the body consumes some of them that it responds much in the same way as if it were consuming table sugar, ie the body cannot tell the difference. Another factor to consider is that some sugar substitutes have been linked to cancer, so it's important to do your own proper research before deciding to include it in your diet, or not. This is why some people prefer natural forms of sugar such as maple sugar/honey.
@johnclaydon604

when one consumes carbohydrates either starch based as in grains or root veg etc or fruit, or honey the blood sugar goes up, this is what should happen, then our cells receive the blood sugar to provide energy, this is a normal biological process. The problem with diabetes is that the blood sugar cannot enter the cells sufficiently so the blood sugar stays high and that becomes a problem. Natural sugars from fruit , grains and veg make insulin resistance low in fact the more fruit I have in a day the lower my fasting blood sugar, as it opens the gates to go in the cells. There is very good research to show diabetes can be overcome with a high fruit diet. The issue is to stop consuming those things that make insulin resistance , and block the cells from ‘eating’ the sugars they need to support life ! The things that cause insulin resistance is all heated and processed PUFA'S ie unsaturated fats/seed oils using in frying and added to most processed foods. Also a diet of unprocessed foods with plenty of fruits and veg provide nutrients that help fight against insulin resistance. So blood sugar goes up after eating honey or in fact any fruit or root veg or grain. It will go up and DOWN especially fast with fruit or honey . Take the blood sugar reading at intervals after the first 30 min reading and see it go down quick. This is nature working with natural foods !!

I am not sure that many people deny that honey too has high fructose content but in a toss up between honey and sugarcane or other sugar, it has been found that honey has other benefits which common sugar doesn't. In fact sugar has no real health benefits. So using honey moderately especially for non-diabetics is quite okay. The ancient tribes and forest dwellers in many countries use honey not only to consume directly but also to preserve meat. They have no major health issues caused by food comsumption.

Great fact based video. It would be misleading to compare the hike in sugar levels in terms percentages. The pre sugar level , which was also at fasting level was a dangerous low of 3.6. Almost hypo !! After a tablespoon of honey the sugar was only a very respectful level of 5.4 😊 even though in percentage terms it was over a 70% increase !!! I very rarely use honey and when I do , it is only a couple of Teaspoons spread on toast. I m glad I watched the enjoyable and well made video, as it calmed down my previous fears on sugar hikes expected after eating honey. Just a couple of points increase in sugar level after eating a tablespoon worth of honey is not bad at all. I will now feel comfortable introducing a tiny bit of honey in my diet, but once or twice a week with emphasis on portion control.

raw honey, tablespoon a day. After my OMAD meal. With a glass of Raw cold pressed fatty milk sometimes. If you are LCHF and dont eat processed sugars at all then this is a balanced treat. I wondered the same about this question and I can attest that my insulin levels return to base very quickly after eating honey, as long as I have no other processed carbs like bread or wraps in my system. Eating a honey white bread sandwich spikes my insulin for longer and takes longer to come down than just eating a spoon full of honey alone. Insulin returned to normal within a few minutes after a spoon full of honey. Eating a Mars bar compared to a spoon of honey then testing my insulin showed my insulin reacted bad to the Mars bar due to the multiple types of sugars that are in these bars which compared to Honey is a simple unprocessed, single instance sugar.

You’d need to run this test having non sweet food after fasting, to compare. Because consuming anything from fasting will raise blood sugar. You’d also need to compare the test same test using sugar and then compare to honey. It’s a great start but not thorough enough to be a full experiment.
@drjoetvMD
@drjoetvMD Жыл бұрын
Blood sugar will rise with any food that has the potential to raise your blood sugar regardless of whether you are fasting or not. That said, it is better to test in a fasted state because you eliminate other possible influences from other foods on your blood sugar. You need to remove confounders in any such experiment. Other foods whether protein or fat will constitute confounders that will invalidate the result of your experiment
@raceyjaseyAP50
@raceyjaseyAP50 Жыл бұрын
@@drjoetvMD Yes, that is true, but the fact of your consuming the honey in a fasted state caused a FAR more dramatic spike than would have occurred in another situation. You explain that you did so to remove "confounding factors", but you seemed to miss mk-owtra's point. The fasted state WAS a confounding factor. Because it greatly exaggerated the result. You would need to repeat the experiment in every detail with the same duration of fast beforehand, but using e.g. oatmeal. Then bread. And so on. They might take an hour to release their sugars, but research suggests they will deliver a pretty comparable spike to the one you got from the honey, providing you adhered to the same protocol and fasting period.

@@drjoetvMD I think @mk-owltra is correct. I'm Type 2 diabetic & if you are a doctor you would know that for a blood sugar level reading to be accurate you would need to wait 2 hours AFTER consumption of ANY food, & he is correct that a proper experiment would need to include not only honey consumed on its' own, but also with other foods such as toast, as well as doing tests with just table sugar after fasting. As you must be aware the body reacts differently to certain foods immediately after fasting, so this also should have been taken into account as a variable to be a valid experiment, & mentioned as a factor to your viewers. It would be like me eating an apple on waking & after 30 minutes of course this would raise my blood sugar levels, but it is whether or not it comes down again after 2 hours, & what it is consumed with /how it is consumed as well. You should have tested yourself after 2 hours of consumption, so this was a bit deceptive. Honey does have health benefits, so scaring people off of consuming it per say is a bit silly. Any food can be over-consumed & have a detrimental effect on the body. Also most people would not consume a tablespoon of honey in one go, so this seems to be an odd amount to choose from. Most people either take a teaspoon directly or in herbal tea, or with something like fruit & yoghurt, or with say oatmeal porridge. I understand that you are trying to get people to understand that it does have an effect on glucose levels, but not including those other variables in the same circumstances is a bit false & misleading. No serious doctor would conduct the kind of experiment like you did & put it out on a public forum as valid, so although I think you were well-meaning, I find your results totally misleading. I would be interested in you conducting this experiment with sugar as well as honey, & both with other food items, & with readings being done after 2 hours to get a valid reading. Even in a non diabetic their blood glucose levels can get very high before going down after 2 hours, so it is crucial for you to do the experiment correctly otherwise it just comes across as bad science and alarmist.

What's really been helpful for me is cutting down on my caloric intake. I never eat more than two meals a day. At first it was rough but I got use to it. I also eat a lot of nuts which are filling and doesn't raise your sugar a lot. Don't do the potato chips and such. Also increase fruit intake. Should also increase vegetables but I'm working on that. Drinking more water helps too. I know I drink way too much diet sodas instead of water. Almost have to force myself to drink just plain water. And increasing your exercising. I had got to the point where I did not exercise. My doctor told me to just walk a half hour 4 days a week and I would not do that. I have started doing that now and hope to get back into playing tennis which I use to love. It's lots of things you can do to lower your A1C. Not surprising. Same for me over a 30 minute period. However after taking Manuka Honey for a month my A1C dropped from 5.8 to 5.3. The long term benefits out weigh the short spikes you get from consuming it. However I only took a teaspoon a day. If I used it throughout the day my A1C would likely have went up. I was a diabetic who lost a toe and had bad retinopathy. I lowered my A1C to 5.8 on a low carb diet. It stayed at that level for about a year when I started using Manuka Honey a month ago. I was expecting a slight increase but I thought the benefits would be worth it. I was surprised Manuka Honey actually lowered my A1C.

I still have no feeling in my 9 other toes. My A1C sat at 5.8 for about a year after sticking with a keto diet for about 9 months. I was happy with that. When I started to use honey. I watch my blood sugar very closely. I didn't want to risk going backwards to far. Yes I had spikes like you mentioned in the video. 50% increase that lasted 30 minutes. That's nearly 2.1% of the day. However it lowered my blood sugar the other 97.9% of the day. Thus a -.5 change in A1C. Healthy functioning cells trumps the 8.2 grams of sugar in a teaspoon of honey. I believe there is a point in which honey would have a negative impact, 1 teaspoon has improved my health. I don't know if it would become negative at 2 teaspoons, 3 teaspoons, or what.

Why would anyone think honey wouldn't raise glucose? Fructose, glucose, sucrose and dextrose are all sugars. Maybe it's my 11 years as a diabetic that made that clear to me.

Good point. Sugar is 50-50 glucose fructose. Honey is 100% fructose. Fructose spikes Uric acid which helps convert the fructose to triglycerides and then fat storage. The body does not utilize fructose as energy. The uric acid raises aldosterone which causes sodium retention and thus water retention. None of that is good for us. This is why bears try and consume as much fructose as possible before hibernation. Fat for energy and water storage. The bears only consume berries etc in season and the go on a long fast so it’s not unhealthy for them. Humans consume fructose all year long and the berries we consume are gmo and have more fructose than wild berries. Fructose is a main cause of non alcoholic fatty liver. Bottom line, nothing Goog comes of fructose.

Most store-bought honey is adulterated with HFCS. Even the Manuca honey used in this experiment could have been adulterated with high fructose corn syrup. So this experiment is not convincing. Such a rapid rise in recorded blood sugar??? Where is the sugar experiment comparison???

Blood sugar (glycemic index) isn't the only reason to use honey instead of table sugar. For one thing table sugar is pure glucose and is mostly made from genetically modified sugar beets. Honey has glucose and fructose, and there are vitamins and minerals and antioxidants. The taste of honey can even help people reduce how much they add to things like coffee, etc.
@drjoetvMD
@drjoetvMD 3 ай бұрын
Actually table sugar is not just pure glucose. Table sugar is sucrose made up of glucose and fructose. Thought I'd let you in that basic fact. Plus table sugar is not made from beets only but mainly from sugar cane and not all beets are genetically modified. It's amazing how we tar foods with one large brush of GMO

I have honey twice a day, a tea spoon each time in my cappuccinos. I don’t eat any refined sugar. My honey come from a local producer, it’s best I’ve ever tasted, and it’s delicious, my blood sugars rise slightly, but they rise for bread, scones, and a lot of other foods, and much higher, so I rarely eat carbs. I did tests a while back and found a lot of foods can do the same, but I’d rather eat my honey. We never have colds, flu and feel great, all my blood came back spot on. What more can I say?

A tablespoon of honey is a huge amount. I don’t have diabetes or blood sugar issues, but when I make my morning apple cider vinegar drink, I use 1/2 teaspoon of honey with one tablespoon of vinegar and 8 ounces of hot water. I never feel adverse effects from this mixture, and it curbs my appetite for hours. Moderation is good.

Thanks for this I pretty much knew this from personal experience (just the way I feel after digesting honey) but I use a little Honey to rub on my skin especially on my face it seems to help with a skin condition that I occasionally have. I wonder if you would like to do the same experiment with honey being applied to the skin I would be curious to know if it affects your blood sugar in any way I personally haven't noticed if it does.

Thank you very much, Mike, for sharing your experience. Could be one of the reasons honey is good for wound healing, the only really scientifically proven benefit of honey. I very much doubt if honey is absorbed through the skin though. I will be surprised if it is. That said, I will try it out to see if there is any significant glucose absorption through the skin. That will certainly blow my mind

its just another honey myth.... Any free sugar causes damage. The effect is illusionary. maybe you had an infection, then the bacteria\fungi died an osmotic death. in the ong term, your cells in the skin will age much faster, and also will die an osmotic death. Short term it seems to help, long term it is detrimental

I believe in moderation which is the key. Once you can have proper balance, all should be well; at least honey is more nutritious than refined white sugar. Even the brown sugar is better than white however too much sugar affects the body in so many ways so it is better to stay away from it and use healthy substitutes.
