I thought I’d show you an average ride's worth of the different types of vehicles/situations the horses at the yard have to deal with while hacking on the roads. We’re very fortunate in that the majority of our hacking is off-road, but sometimes we need to use the roads for a few minutes to reach the fields and tracks where we do some of our hacking. These clips are taken from about 10 minutes of footage on the road at the end of a lovely hack (around 10am on a Saturday). As you can see, the majority of these drivers passed safely and received a wave (and a big cheesy grin!) from me and the other riders who felt safe enough to take a hand off the reins; I didn’t include all of the vehicles that passed, just the ‘scary’ ones, but all vehicles who passed safely got a wave & a smile! A big thank you to all the drivers who stuck to the Highway Code and passed wide and slow 😊
Remember, when passing horses:
1) Slow down to 15mph.
2) Be patient, don’t sound your horn or rev your engine.
3) Pass horse wide (at least a car’s width).
4) Drive slowly away.
Here are some more stats and tips on how to pass horses safely on the road, as well as some advice for horse riders on how to safely ride on the roads: think.direct.gov.uk/horses.html
