What horses deal with on the roads

I thought I’d show you an average ride's worth of the different types of vehicles/situations the horses at the yard have to deal with while hacking on the roads. We’re very fortunate in that the majority of our hacking is off-road, but sometimes we need to use the roads for a few minutes to reach the fields and tracks where we do some of our hacking. These clips are taken from about 10 minutes of footage on the road at the end of a lovely hack (around 10am on a Saturday). As you can see, the majority of these drivers passed safely and received a wave (and a big cheesy grin!) from me and the other riders who felt safe enough to take a hand off the reins; I didn’t include all of the vehicles that passed, just the ‘scary’ ones, but all vehicles who passed safely got a wave & a smile! A big thank you to all the drivers who stuck to the Highway Code and passed wide and slow 😊
Remember, when passing horses:
1) Slow down to 15mph.
2) Be patient, don’t sound your horn or rev your engine.
3) Pass horse wide (at least a car’s width).
4) Drive slowly away.
Here are some more stats and tips on how to pass horses safely on the road, as well as some advice for horse riders on how to safely ride on the roads: think.direct.gov.uk/horses.html

Firstly I want to say a big thank you to all the drivers in this video who stuck to the Highway Code and passed wide and slow - we really appreciate you! 😊 We’re very fortunate in that the majority of our hacking is off-road, but sometimes we need to use the roads for a few minutes to reach the fields and tracks where we do some of our hacking. I thought I’d show you just a few of the different types of vehicles/situations the horses at the yard have to deal with while out on hacks - aren’t they brave! I have seen and experienced some awful/dangerous driving around horses on these roads in the past, but fortunately on this day almost all of the drivers passed safely and received a wave of thanks and a big cheesy grin! Please see the description box for more info ^ ^ ^

PonyCam people rarely slow down for my group when we go riding due to they don't care. I live in North Carolina in the US and it seems that our laws are so much different than in the UK when it comes to horses and riders.

Precious Rose Equestrian Incredibly it’s not actually the law in the U.K. to pass by a horse wide and slow. We’re very lucky to have mostly considerate drivers where we live and in most other rural areas, but it’s a different story in other parts of the U.K.! x

Just today I went hacking on my pony, it was my first ever hack my mum was beside me on foot to keep me safe which was really great, as we approached the yard a cement truck came past at a junction I signalled right and they ignored me and sped past which spooked my pony and she stumbled into the middle of the road I'm so thankfully the other drivers saw this and stopped otherwise who know what might have happened

I was happy to see the rider helping the drivers know when to pass. As a rider (and driver) I get frustrated when a rider doesn’t direct me. Come on riders, help the drivers and be generous with your thanks. You will train your local drivers to be considerate.

The fact that you are so polite and thank every single driver who is respectful makes those few situations in the video even more frustrating. I think riders and drivers must have a mutual respect for one another, something which is demonstrated so wonderfully in (most of) this video!

So thankful when drivers respect cues given by riders. Was out walking with my 2 year old filly who is an extremely green horse and my friend who had her more experienced horse. Most drivers were great but there was one taxi driver who ignored all our requests to stop and decided to rev his engine right behind my horse who was already spooking at something else. Thankfully we managed to calm her down, despite the taxi driver shouting and blaring his horn and telling us not to be on the roads. Everybody was fine and nobody got hurt.

I was out hacking on the road a few years ago (I was 11 on my 13.2hh pony) and I had a group of boys in a BMW throw a beer can at my pony as they drove past. It hit his bum and he shot off. They found this hilarious but it could have been very dangerous. I was with one adult in front of me and we were both single file with high vis on. There are so many amazing, considerate drivers but also plenty of idiots 🙄

I have also had a few encounters with some inconsiderate drivers. I was leasing my friends horse and me and a group of friends decided to go out on a hack in the middle of winter, it was a warm day and so we enjoyed being outside and rode along the gravel road that went away from the college campus which was were we had boarded the horses as we were students there at the time. This gravel road runs along side an active highway and has a fence running alongside it. On this hack we came across an inconsiderate driver who didn't even move over or slow down to pass us. The mare I was riding spooked and the others spooked as well and ran towards the highway but we were able to stop them and calm them down, but we were beyond angry with this person who had stopped after they saw what happened but they didn't apologize at all! anyway some people are dumb, the horses were ok after the incident.

My private yard has no off road hacking and when I do hack out, fully decked out in reflective gear (and no bridle paths or public fields available) I have had a few clashes in the past 6 months from moving to a new private yard, ranging to cars going 40+ in a 30 zone, to getting ✌️, (obviously not the peace sign version), but my worst encounter being a massive cement truck, wheel turning, going roughly 65, followed by a slightly smaller truck going the same speed, a gap of roughly two car spaces, a TNT Truck going 50 (which seemed so slow in comparison) and three family cars all also going 50, I was rightfully on the left side of the road, halfway on the verge, and the cement truck suddenly came on our side of the road, one foot away, the gust was so strong that a friend, on the verge (as this was his first time out at the new yard) fell back and if not for a wheelie bin, would of fallen flat on the ground, luckily, my 8 year old is a saint and calmly moved to the side, which makes it all the more infuriating when he spooks at a bush moving!

It’s really nice when you have kind people pass you on roads, but unfortunately you do get the odd idiot. My friend had a close one the other day he was about 5cm away from clipping her horse 🤦🏼‍♀️ and going around 30mph despite her signals. The sad thing is 2strides away was the bridle path she was going to then use so if he’d have been patient it’d have taken at the most a minute of his time. She and her horse were ok they were both a bit spooked so came back straight away instead of hacking out.

Rach W That is true, although I’d just like to quote this from the British Horse Society: ‘In most cases, as long as you are riding within the highway boundaries - usually hedges, fences or walls - you are exercising your right to travel along the highway.’ (at this yard we only ride on the verges if we feel it’s unsafe to be on the road for whatever reason). While riders should be on the road, I think it’s important to remember that the verge can be used as an ‘escape route’ if necessary 😊
