Hypothermia: it’s something you see all too often in movies starring Leonardo DiCaprio. But what is it, exactly? And how does it really happen?
Our body is always trying to maintain a balmy temperature of around 98.6℉ or 37°C. Hypothermia occurs when our body loses heat faster than we can produce it. And hypothermia doesn’t only strike sinking-ship victims and 19 th-century fur-trappers wandering in the wilderness.
Studies estimate about 1,500 Americans die of accidental hypothermia each year. In fact, exposure to cold is responsible for twice as many deaths as heat exposure annually. Young children and the elderly are especially vulnerable. So, why is hypothermia so dangerous?
Most heat loss occurs when unprotected surfaces radiate heat away from the body. In addition, wearing wet clothes makes heat loss even worse. And wind chill can quickly escalate the situation because it strips away the thin layer of heat on the skin’s surface. As your temperature drops, your body and brain fire back.
Your thyroid and adrenal glands release a flood of hormones that boost your metabolism, heart rate, and blood pressure. In the brain, the hypothalamus tells your blood vessels to constrict. This moves the blood farther from the skin’s surface, where its heat can escape. Your hypothalamus also signals your muscles to shiver, which kicks your metabolism into overdrive, 2-5 times the normal rate.
At this point, you’re on the brink. If you don’t get to safety soon, you’ll hit severe hypothermia and be in serious trouble. Eventually, even your brain will grow colder. When that happens, it stops functioning properly which can make you feel dizzy, disoriented, and even want to strip naked.
Before too long, you run the risk of permanent brain damage. But just how long do you have? It’s hard to know because each situation and person is different.
However, radiologist Anna Bagenholm currently holds the record for surviving the coldest body temperature. After a skiing accident, she endured 80 minutes in freezing cold water. Her body temperature had plummeted to 56.7 ºF or 13.7ºC. Hopefully, that never happens to you, but here are some tips for treating hypothermia with several safety measures.
Immediate first aid. Victims can also be treated with warm IV fluids and saltwater solutions.
And you can help to avoid hypothermia with some safety measures, like wearing appropriate clothing, avoiding overexertion in cold conditions, and letting people know what time you expect to arrive.
Run smart, travel smart, and dress smart - even if it makes you look like a giant marshmallow.

I remember a soldier telling he was in a battle and how he jumped into a ditch full of water , soaking his clothes . It was very cold and he soon started shaking with the cold. He knew he had to change clothes but the only dry clothes were ones of his dead friend lying nearby. He had to strip the dead guy and put his dry clothes on to save his own life. He survived the war but the mental scars are still with him to this day.

I was waiting at the bus stop a few months ago, sitting on the bench. I saw an old woman coming towards me, so I thought to myself, "time to do my good deed for the day." I stood up knowingly, and stepped aside so she could sit down. She walked right past me.

What the video forgot to mention is that it's not because your brains not working properly that makes you want to strip naked. After shivering for so long your muscles become exhausted and relax, including your veins. Your veins suddenly come close to the surface of your skin again where it is adjusted to the cold and that makes you feel like you're overheating despite bring cold. This feeling is what makes victims want to strip naked in an attempt to cool off. Your brain not working properly is what makes you think getting naked in freezing weather is a good idea.

After watching Titanic, I was curious to see how I would be if I was in that temperature of water (-28 degrees F), so I did something sorta like the ice bath challenge, measuring out how cold it was by how much ice I put in, and it finally got to that temperature. I put on roughly the same amount of clothing Jack had on, and put my hand in. I didn't last a second...

Went into shock and hypothermia after a bad crash, I remembering being so cold and scared I couldn't move I kept trying to make myself move but I couldn't move a thing. I think the temperature was in the negatives when I crashed and I laid in that mangled car for at least three hours I don't know when the hypothermia hit. But I couldn't stay awake and just sat there screaming for help and sobbing trying to get up. I am very thankful for the help I got from a lady who heard my screaming and helped the EMS and firefighters find me, I remember them cutting all my cloths off as soon as they got me out of the car because I couldn't stay awake and couldn't communicate to them

I had mild hypothermia while cycling in the Andes. Was a beautiful day and I cycled up to 3000mtrs. Things changed rapidly and I was very underdressed. -4. I never suffered as much trying to get back down to 500mtrs in my life. I had to hold on the brakes and spin my legs as fast as I could to keep heat in them. And could only go slow because of the wind chill which made it worse. It was a battle.. I ended up in hospital and was very lucky. The next few days I had extremely painful muscles all over, I assume from the blood going to my vitals.

I've had hypothermia because I went out to play in the snow with wet hair. I was shivering for a while while my parents were keepimg me warm in various ways. I don't think it was anything severe but it wasn't damn enjoyable let me tell you that. Your whole body is shivering and you can't stop it, your muscles contract so they start to ache and hurt a little. Your jaw also shivers and hits your teeth constantly and you can't do anything to stop it.

@@loc9588Not at all true. Hypothermia is any time your body drops below a healthy temperature range, and it can be mild, moderate, or severe. What the poster described are classic symptoms of mild hypothermia. Take a wilderness first aid course, it's very helpful for knowing what to do. And mild hypothermia is itself not very dangerous BUT if you're still in the situation that got you cold in the first place you need to get warm otherwise the mild hypothermia will eventually continue to get worse.

Hypothermia is the worst. I experienced it back in 2020 when my car got stuck in snow 1 mile away from the house. I walked back home and that was the biggest mistake of my life. We had -50F windchills and even the though I had jacket on and shows my layering was not proper. I felt cold for days, my heart had weird rhythm, and when the paramedics arrived and gave me heated blankets to it seemed to make no difference, by the time I got home I was so confused that I couldn’t stand up or remember the code to open my garage. Thankfully my wife saw me on the nest cam and rushed outside. I am truly lucky to be alive after this. Take the winter serious, be prepared well and for the worst. Hypothermia can kill you so fast you won’t even know what happened.

No coat/ gloves for 12 hrs wind splashing waves, I had been so cold I couldn't even shiver, I started to hallucinate and get dizzy. We finally got back to the dock and I put both of my hands in front of a heater.. I was scared shitless when I felt nothing. I have experienced hypothermia( extreme shaking) swimming in the River Cam in only trunks with the water 2°C. The mistake I made was staying in the water too long. Though I wrapped up in lots of warm clothes, drank a warm drink I shook and shivered uncontrollably for about 2 hours. A tip for wild swimming with only trunks or for the ladies costume- don't stay in for more than about 20 minutes and immerse yourself very slowly.

wait, if being in low temperatures speeds up your metabolism, would working out/exercising in colder temperatures be of any benefit?

Yeah... there are some people who do this I believe... but it's pretty nitch. Will also boost you bodies ability to sustain cold for longer, which is the primary benefit as I understand.

the other day I was burning alive so I checked my temperature. It was 95.5°. I couldn't believe it. I had the ac on and sitting in front of the fan and still had to pull my shirt off. I felt like I was gonna catch fire. My temp usually runs 97-97ish. I have 2 thermometers so I know it's right, plus, I checked at the old folks home scanner when we went to see my boyfriend's mom. .

My body: if it did lose the fuel source for heart power and heat, power usage for heat can go beyond the limit; 1,000,000 mWh and massive demands for power and heat are expected. After an hour, Massive power outages spread across the entire body. Body temperatures drop by several degrees. My organs and other parts of my body start to shut down due to frigid temperatures inside the body. 5 hrs in, temps are now 64.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Immune plant centers encounter severe failure to provide any clean blood cells. 1 day in, temps are now 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice can accumulate around arms, legs, and even head. 2 days in, temps are now 23 degrees Fahrenheit. Blood can freeze into ice blocks. And here it comes, Death

I stopped to drop my friend off and when I got off I lost my balance and fell and was unconscious for a minute , but then I got up like it was nothing , my hands were warmer . I think it was hypothermia , but I am not sure. I got home by taxi , I was really scared .

Id imagine that if I dident have a big dry blanket and a warm house to scoot to right away im sure it wouldent take long to get hypothermia. If your standing outside naked, how long and at what tempature would it be for you to get hypothermia ?

Suddenly I stopped feeling the wind chill in the air. I trudged my way home as my arms and legs started shutting down! A block away from my home and it felt like 5 miles. I barely got into my house as a collapsed in a heap near a heater register! I always wondered if i was suffering from a sudden case of hypothermia!

I think i was about once to pass out from hypothermia (at least thats what it felt like). I was in my room, with only a shirt, a thin sweater and short pants, it was cold and was raining, forgot to close the window. Then i started to feel weak and extremely cold, i wanted to sleep so bad and i could barely keep my eyes open. I just remove my sweater and i lay down in my sofa, my sister noticed and hopefully my parents helped me. I've heard that if you sleep while you have hypothermia is dangerous and you could die. Welp, guess i was about to die then. Still terrifying.

Mercury can cause dysautonomia, with dysautonomia you can have hypothermia or spontaneous hypothermia- it is one of the worse things ever. It is very scary when your body will just not warm up- muscles tighten up and lock almost, you become frightened to move, There is a type of Parkinson's disease that also has the symptoms of spontaneous hypothermia. Sometimes the body does not shiver sometimes it even kind of judders. Finding a doctor to take you seriously when you have a problem with mercury proves to be not very easy.
