What I Carry on my Gravel Bike Rides: Short, Long & Really Long!

I've been asked many times, what do I carry for every gravel bike ride, or how about the rides where you go long, or really long?
There are three configurations closely related to the description of this video. For every ride, the saddlebag always accompanies me, and likely with some food stashed into the rear pockets of my jersey, or a gel or two stashed into the gripper of my bib shorts (free space!)
For longer rides, I add a top tube Bento type box (see everything listed below and in the video), or a bag that attaches behind the handlebar / alongside the stem. KaiVenture Bags is my choice for that position.
Finally, if I'm going really long, I will add something like the Revelate Designs Jerrycan to the bike, but I am exploring some additional options soon, including the carbon fibre X1 rack system by Tailfin.cc

A few other things I carry on long rides, zip ties, wet wipes and I wrap electrical tape around the mini pump. Like your videos. Cheers

for multi day rides I'd add a rear derailleur mount - it's small and I had it bent (and unbent) on some occasions. If it snapped completely, that'd be a 500 mile problem... Again for multi-day rides, some spare spokes are useful as it's hard to get the right kind on demand.

Rather than wet wipes I pack medical saline wipes, they do the same job albeit without the pretty smell, and can also help in case of injury.

YES, bringing tissue paper is underrated! You never know when one of your ride snacks will upset your stomach making you take an emergency pit stop...

Great video jom maybe just add a couple pair of surgical gloves just in case you have to work on your chain or derailer it’ll keep your hands clean .

Awesome content as always. I started riding with a Camelbak and in most cases forget it is there. About to start playing with one of their vests that will allow me to put quick snacks, between longer breaks, closer at hand. Often times on hot days I'll dedicate my bottles to Skratch Labs products. I need a gets CO2 inflator. And lastly, shout to Revelate Designs gear which I love. So much good gear out there these days! Now if I only had more time to ride...

Nice one George on all counts. I only use my ancient Camelbak Razor at events such as Dirty Kanza 200. I generally create routes that pass through towns regularly... my drone often accompanies me which eradicates the potential for a Camelbak.

Great insight. Coincidentally, I was looking into some kind of stem bag over the last few days - not specifically for gravel, but for some of the road sportives I usually do too. It would give me a handy place up front to store foods, and other bits and pieces close to hand. I might look into that chain lube you mentioned too - I want to move away from the Muc-off I use at the moment - I always end up with a black chain with it. Was that dumondech a dry style lube though? Only other things I would carry that isn't on your list are nitrile gloves, to stop my hands getting dirty if I need to either work on eg chain/derailleur etc, or if I really need to put a tube into the tyre when it already has sealant in it; some (releasable) zip ties - never know when you might need them; and some electrical insulating tape.

The gloves are a good idea. Dumonde Tech is a wet lube. Not a fan of dry lubes around here.

Always appreciate the tips JOM. I am now a fan of Kaiventures products, who knew? Have you ever been tempted to pack a battery pack to charge your electronics, or would you be more of a dynohub long range slackpacker?

For the Varia, I recommend getting the proper mount from Garmin with the screw (for round seat posts). I had the original mount moving around the seat post and eventually the rubber band snapped while crossing a small bridge... insert went flying into a stream. Luckily I was able to recover the light and the main part of the mount.

Nice to See the Lynskey PRO GR back, I have the PRO Cross, what size Gravel Kings do you run? I have 43mm on mine for Gravel Riding.

I ride 700c x 38mm most of the time, they expand up to about 41mm on a lot of rims.

DuMonde Tech, I would not use any other chain lube. I also carry a Park Tool patch kit for inner tubes in case someone is really in a jam.

I need a tip for how to keep water for long endurance rides best way possible with no stop for refilling. If possible, attach bottles on fork in bikepacking style, timetrial double bottle mount behind saddle or camel bag? I see a lot of riders wearing a camel but I thought it's good to get rid of the weight on your body and keep the weight on your bike as much possible?

I carry a very light and cheap cable lock. It's slightly better than using a zip tie, and one can probably break it with a nail clipper. But it gives me peace of mind for the 5 minutes when I grab a coffee or need to use the tissue paper.

Ya know,I looked at reviews on the tubalito tubes,lots of guys said they split,the presta valves leaked,the patches didnt stick.the lack of threads on the stem meant some pumps didnt work to in flate,and the air doesnt like to come out of them. I went with a vittoria latex tube as a spare.

Looks like your touting your need to review a minimal cool tool 😉. Like the way some cool tools have hidden bits like valve remover and spoke key. How fragile are those tubes in the bag next to other stuff? Any tips for protecting them from wearing against the bag?

I pack those tubes in such a way that nothing pokes or prods them.

Those tubes are a good idea. That Specialized pump is a good size. Would you be able to inflate a totally flat tubeless tyre with that or is it just for topping up? Cheers👍

You could inflate a totally flat tubeless tyre, but it would take a while... and the other issue, it may not seat the bead fully into the rim, so you may have a lumpy ride home...

Jom , Nice guide and tips. But how about those bags placement on your bike ?. Since it has smaller main triangle , any tips ?. Since most of us who rode small to xtra small frame running out of space even with 620 ml water bottle.

Arif, you saw what bags I used in that video for a smaller frame. I suggest looking at what I did, as a frame bag will eliminate space for a water bottle, etc.

Hi Bill... the saddle on my Lynskey is a simple Fizik Arione. I've been experimenting with saddles of late... namely the Ergon SR Men's Pro, RideFarr.com carbon rail saddle, the Shimano PRO MTB saddle and finally, the very fancy Specialized Mirror... I posted a review of the Specialized saddle to the website recently.

@@billorr99 The Ergon SR Men's pro is very good and won't break the bank. The Specialized saddle is insanely expensive... Saddles are a personal choice but the Ergon was great after using an Arione for 10+ years.

Hello there... I like to have stats on one computer and the mapping / navigation on another. Also, it is handy if I need a second viewpoint of the map from the other computer, especially if I'm figuring out a re-route. A true first world problem!

Great video. In regards to the Tubolite, what is the minimum and maximum tyre width you would be able to use these in? I have a tubeless road bike with 700c x 32mm tyres and am considering a gravel bike with 700c x 40mm so would be happy if the ones in the video could be used in both. Cheers

Tubo CX/Gravel is made for tire widths from 30mm to 40mm so you can use it in both your wheels.

I've yet to try the dart plugs, despite carrying around the Dynaplug from time to time. I've used the bacon strips one time, they worked well.

Quick question about tyre boots. Park Tool recommend tyre boots should only be used to get one home from an emergency. As a relative newbie to off-road/tubeless affairs, and coming from the roadie side, I think: I need a tyre boot = I need a new tyre. Is that the same with larger, say, 40mm+ size tyres?

Pretty much if you need to boot any tyre, you can consider it knackered. That would imply a nasty slice somewhere in the casing, barring a small hole the sealant couldn't handle. I have plugged at least one 40+mm tyre and patched one from the inside once I was home (this was before plugs, had to install a tube).

Interesting choices. No way I would take up space with the huge chain breaker or quick link pliers. I have a chain breaker on my Crank Bros multi tool and I have never had to undo a quick link on a ride but I am capable of doing so if need be. However, I bring plenty of stuff that others would find silly. Like duct tape, zip ties, a little cassette removal tool, spare spokes, a spare cleat and various spare nuts (bottle cages, etc), a couple of those little powder packs that stop bleeding, KT tape, needle and thread (in case of sidewall cuts). And dog spray, and a folding knife. I might bring only one food bar, so I guess in an emergency I would have to kill and eat a squirrel. So I might need to pack a mini stove. I have the luxury of not having to worry about weight (because the engine is very heavy), so I like to pack for any emergency short of complete frame/crank/wheel failure.

I’m curious about needing the chain link breaker tool - why would we to need remove a link during a ride? ( serious question I hope someone can answer, as I’m fairly new to gravel riding)

If you had the misfortune to break a derailleur hanger... you can attempt to turn the bike into a single speed, hence, the chain length needs to be adjusted. Or, if you snapped a chain, you could shorten it a little, use the spare link and you're rolling again... but have to be aware of not shifting into the big / big combo with the chain shortened.

That's correct... I am not alone. I've finished that crazy 200 mile Dirty Kanza race three times, 200 miles in one day! Many other people are racking up way bigger miles than me!
