Learned a lot. I am a professional tech from 8-5 and they shop I work for is all about volume. No type of schedule and get pulled off jobs multiple times a day.

One man band shop myself. I do time management by only doing big jobs I do a lot of engine swaps, head gaskets and timing chains. No just brakes or just oil change unless it's part of the big job. A lot of my customers text me and I call them back or if I know they are at work text them back. I'm the only shop in the area that can get a head gasket done just about right away and because of the big jobs less phone calls and NO waiters lol. I use Mitchell1 for repair info and billing saves a lot of time as well

Basically you adapted your workload to your volume and shop size. As 1 man theres only so much you can do. At my last dealer the foreman dispatched and he said “theres no such thing as too much work” or he would give you a waiter when youre balls deep in a big job squeezing waiters in whenever possible. Horrible business practice, and that dealer today is a shit show.

I am not a shop owner, but time management is super important. I come in early to get set up, speak to advisors, review the schedule for the day. Then I only focus on one car at a time. I've done a lot of reading about multitasking, and you can go down a wormhole on this. One job at a time, push other things to side. Then when I take a break or finish a job, evaluate the other tasks, see where I am in the day, prioritize remaining tasks.

I definitely understand when you first start out overscheduling and I'd get there at 6AM and finish up @ midnight. I soon learned from that after many years of long hrs but the first couple yrs was getting my customer base & reputation. You covered about everything and you'll learn as you go but I have no doubt you will succeed! Today's technology, social media & website design definitely helps. Texting customers with estimates, pre-repair scanning results & photos lets the customers know what is going on with their vehicles. Quality before quantity is what keeps customers coming back and your reputation & reviews reflect it.

Fellow shop owner/operator, i try my best with time management, i usually do estimates on sunday evenings, work a typical few hrs in the garage per day, spend a few hrs in the commercial barns, spend a few hrs in the produce patch, i wish i was able to manage time in to my schedual to fix my bike, its been torn apart in my basement for like 2 years 😂😂, back to the garage tho. I am with you on the having certain calling/estimate times i dont like to be bothered or questions about non related things to the subject at hand, great way to be thrown off taske and possibly make an error costing us as our own bosses money. I do have a few small things to still learn on but i feel as tho ive done half decent so far, and with you on being an overlooker of your work, checking on things none related or even related to your job. systems work togather, as techs, we understand that wereas most people would not, making it into my 6th year of business with 2023 closing fast! 🙌🏁 Great video love listening to these small clips you put up chris, as a small business owner, i love to listen to advice, words, knowledge, exc, growth is good, in many more ways then just one🤘

Great advice! My boyfriend wants to start a shop but he’s too scared to do it alone without a partner. He says he’s not confident with the paper work side of the business like book keeping and everything legal with the business. Any advice?

I’m in the market for a radiator hose pick by snapon. I’m planning to change the upper and lower radiator hoses on my ‘16 ram 1500, can you recommend either the tool or set for me (part #)? Can you recommend and long bent one needle nose too for the clamps? Not that I have any leaks, just figured to change cuz truck is about 7 years old. Also, would you recommend changing to new thermostat? Btw - I only go with oem parts.

How do you handle lunch and test drives? Do you leave a note on the door when your gone ? How do you go about this ?
