Got Patterns? What do you do with the vintage patterns you have? In this video, I show you what I like to do with old patterns once I get them home. There is also a bonus flip-through of a junk journal I made with an old pattern envelope.

This brings back so many wonderful memories for me. I am 82 years old and when I was a young girl we could go where they sold Fabric and they would give us the old out of date pattern books. We would take these home and make paper dolls out of them we would find a head that we liked and we would cut the Torso out with shoulders but no arms and nothing else. And then we would cut the clothes out and cut off the head and put tabs on the shoulders to make paper dolls. I love doing this so much and I miss it yet today. I must admit that I look to try to find one of those books today and they now sell for like $200. I don't get to go thrifting much anymore but I always look for old patterns. Thank you so much for this trip down memory lane. Blessings from New Mexico

I used to make paper dolls out of the Sears Roebuck Catalog. I would glue the furniture in a shoebox to make the paper dolls houses. Such fun!

Wow--I have a lot of these patterns but from my days sewing and to hear them described as really old and vintage puts me in my age bracket and I feel I am still young at heart, if not so much in body. Mine are from the 60s and 70s mainly and believe it or not I still use them.

Oh, the memories you have brought to light. I now wish I had saved all the patterns from all the clothese my mom made for me and herself. She even made all of my Barbie doll clothes from pj-s to bridal gowns. TFS!!

Great memories. My neighbor/babysitter loved sewing Barbie and doll clothes. She also knitted (with sequins) several sweaters. She made them for my friend’s and myself when were little through about third or fourth grade. By about fifth grade my grandma taught me to knit. Yes, those were the days. I’ll be 68 in July.

I'm looking for Barbie doll patterns , but at the regular stores They are 13 to15 dollars and that was several years ago.... I'll have to look for them at thrift stores...

You are the first person that is just like me! I can’t believe it! I buy these types of patterns and just look at them….saying to myself, “I wonder what that girl/people was thinking!” They just don’t make them like this anymore. You never ever hear about the person who had drawn the front cover. What type of job is that? What a great job. I keep each one in Mylar plastic bag. I have two giant four drawer cabinets, about 500….really nice. I never buy cut up ones, never! I especially collect New Look 1960’s. They have their own room. They want for nothing.💕

I used to sew almost all my clothes until clothing got cheaper and patterns got expensive. But recently I started finding perfectly good patterns at thrift stores, as well as fabric. So is started sewing clothes again and it feels so good. I also make journals, and love the way you design yours. Thank you for this video!

I think that’s great! Yes, use the old patterns and good thrifted fabric and save money! I once made my daughter’s pantaloons from an old bed sheet! You know the older styles always come back into fashion eventually. 😃

Simplicity 7535. Oh my! I made a red brocade dress using that pattern. I wore it to a high school Valentine’s Day dance. I loved it! I once was given a very large Banker’s Box size of patterns from a student I was teaching. Every pattern looked like it hadn’t been used. When I went through them and found this out, I came back and asked her if she used them. Oh yes! She said, I tape them to my sliding glass door and trace them off. That way, I don’t ruin the pattern. Brilliant!

So cute! When I saw all the "girls" I thought that this would be fun to do for my grandkids to play with and do paper dolls. Once I started making bookmarks with them, which I'd found instructions for. Cut out the people, glue onto card stock then decorate and and a ribbon. I love finding these other ideas.

I thought this was a very interesting video. I love vintage patterns and I recently asked my 92 year old Mom if she had any. She's still as sharp as can be and she had been cleaning out and gave me some old patterns along with some wooden spools of thread. They were as old as my childhood. I'm very new to journaling and have only made one so far. I would love to make a sewing journal also because I have so many things to add to one. I just bought a Tom Holtz 5" fussy cutting scissors and it works like a charm however if I were to be cutting the images on patterns that finger blade makes sense. I'm interested enough about what you do so I'm going to subscribe. Thank you for sharing this video it gave me the warmth that's familiar to me doing anything old and vintage. ❤️❤️❤️😊🙏

Good idea fussy cutting the images. TFS! What I do with old patterns, I also open up the pattern envelope, then I put it into a laminating sheet, run it through my laminator. Then I take the pattern tissue and cut a 2” width strip, put mod podge on it, let it dry, then sew it into the bottom of the laminated cover, voila pockets on the inside of the cover. Then if I send it as happy mail, I fill each of the pockets wth ephemera.

You can sew ruffles out of the tissue paper. I cut a 1 in. Strip and just start folding and sewing. I just found your channel. Good job!!

What a beautiful journal you’ve created! The S7535 sheath pattern looks like the one I used often when I was in high school in the late 60’s. It was my favorite pattern! I wish I still had my old patterns, and my mother’s too. 😊

Thank you! How neat is that, that I have that same pattern? I will definitely be making a journal with it. My mother taught me how to sew when I became pregnant with my first child, as I couldn’t afford the expensive maternity clothes. It would have been nice to have her old patterns too.

The brown and cream dress in the 7535 pattern was made by me when I was a junior in high school (1968). In fact it was the exact same color! Wore it to a semi formal dance and in a fashion at school. Was one of my favorite things to wear. I think I still have the pattern tucked away in my sewing area!

If you have all the pieces and the correct size. You can still use the patterns. They can be updated with current fabric. There are KZfaqrs who show how they update the fashions. The results are stunning. Youth and baby patterns are ageless. Never make collages or other crafts with the patterns. There are people who value them and make clothing from them.

My daughter bought some gift bags at a craft show that had the front of the pattern glued to a plain brown paper bag with handles. Inside were the pattern pieces on tissue paper to use as tissue paper in the gift bag. I thought it was a genius way to reuse a pattern rather than throwing it in the trash. And of course you can pass it along with another gift to someone you want to give.

Thanks for sharing! I love your journal. I am a mixed media artist and I used the tissue paper from the pattern for collage, it’s easy to tear and layers really nicely. I like to use Elmer’s glue or mod podge because the paper wrinkles and gives it a nice texture to paint over.

This actually makes me so sad 😢 to think of cutting up these patterns & instruction books & booklets. I have a fairly decent pattern “reference library” & I do everything I can to preserve them in their entirety. Different strokes for different folks…to each her own but I could never cut them up!

My Hobby Lobby still sells the old pattern books for $4.00 each. I do love your junk journal idea. I just gave away probably 200 of my old patterns. I may still use your idea on the few I have left.

Love what you are doing with the patterns covers. I have made several one signature journals using the same methods and materials. I am finding that I usually over do the ephemera and need to leave more plain pages. I have tried to sell some on marketplace , at craft shows, etc. People love to look at them but very few sold.....so I have a collection of them made, as you say it becomes addictive.

I have many of the patterns you showed and I still use some. A few patterns I had given to the local seamstress who makes wedding gowns. The wedding dress patterns were from the 50s and had some unique sleeves and other elements I thought they could use them for some ideas in new dresses. It was cool to see her gowns with a mix of old and new in the front windows of the store. I just recently broke out a few baby patterns to make some sleepers for a new grandbaby. I always favored the baby gowns with the drawstring bottoms for newborns. The thought of cutting up the covers kinda makes me sad but you are doing something you love with them and I'm sure eventually they will break down and crumble away if not put to some use.

I think that's neat how you use these old patterns. I love vintage sewing ephemera of whatever kind. I'm 67 and learned to sew in 8th grade home ec class...that was during the 70s and the pattern covers you're showing from that era look so familiar. I did make myself some cute dresses and casual clothes for a good many years. I don't do much sewing these days, but intend to get back into it...trying to squeeze it in along with all my other interests and commitments. We'll see. Thanks for sharing 👍

I too am a sucker for vintage patterns. I use them for their intended purpose. I do like the vintage illustrations but as a seamstress I prefer to see an actual photograph for a true representation of the finished garment. I have that doll clothes pattern in my collection. I look for patterns that have not been used so that there is no possibility that a pattern piece has been lost over the years. I've never seen that finger knife gadget, it intrigues me.

I hadn’t thought of it that way, that the photographs show the fit better. I used to sew clothes for myself and my children. I guess the illustrations are more appealing for the way I use them now. The finger blade has been so helpful for the thin papers I cut. Thanks for watching!

Neat little Fiskars tool! I'll have to look for that. I have a little box of sewing pattern ladies, too! It's nice to have some all cut out and ready for projects. Great idea to bolster torn images with tracing paper!!

I like watching videos about junk journals, but I don’t make them. I do think they are charming and quite beautiful, but I confess that I don’t understand them. Please believe me that I do not mean any disrespect, but can someone please explain them to me? Are they simply works of art? Because they are so lovely, I can understand them as art, all on their own. But, are they meant to have an additional function? I ask this only because there is frequently little space to actually use as a journal. Either way, I think they are absolutely lovely and actually mesmerizing. Also, as a sewing teacher, I can assure you that many people still do, in fact, sew. Often, later patterns were multi sized, so people may have traced the size they needed, and kept the pattern uncut, so that a different size could be used later, if needed. ❤

You are right. I’m sure there are people who still sew and carefully use their patterns. As far as an explanation for junk journals…there are many videos out there that explain the why. I know some are more meant to be looked at, but others have a lot of blank space for journaling. You could have journals by theme, for example, if you go on a trip, to write all about it, include photos, and save some of your little paper ephemera in it, such as ticket stubs, receipts, brochures, etc. Your imagination is the limit. 😃

When you picked up the Simplicity pattern of the purple dress/gown with the lace bell sleeves you made me smile! Then you read the date!! I made my own wedding gown, very simple, fitted at the waist and an A-Line style with lace bell sleeves. I was married in 1970! I love what you do with the envelopes. Such a cute idea to recycle them in a creative way.

Right?! Even the torn ones can be used for collage if they are beyond repair. Just use some mod podge to seal it and you have a little masterpiece!

Would you consider scanning and printing the illustrations from sewing patterns? That way, you would get the enjoyment ftom the elements you like and sewers would still be able to use the patterns. Sewers collect and use vintage patterns.

The issue I would have with that is whether or not it is copyright infringement. Plus there is something to be said about having an original versus a copy. Originals feel different, look and smell different to me. Thanks for asking so nicely though. 😊

My mom had so many patterns from the 70’s, I went up into her attic, she doesn’t throw anything out, but bummer, I only found 1. Bummer. Great book

Love my sewing pattern finds. My process is pretty much the same thing except I save the tissue for wrapping and packing the journals for shipping. I fussy cut the images because it is faster than a knife. I have been trying to find a way to store the images when cut. Right now they are in Diaso document folders that open in half that makes it easy to sort through them. Thinking of using a washi tape storage drawers.

I understand the attraction to the cut outs, but what do you do with the patterns and instructions. I guess because I love history so much when I find them (old patterns) I repair them and file them in file totes. I buy specific patterns on Etsy many times. Have you ever thought about selling them online? Many people love to use the pattern and keep it the same or modernize it, make costumes, or sell the sewn patterns (clothes) online. It is fun to wear old clothing patterns you designed and sewed yourself.

I have used the tissue in other projects. I sometimes use the instructions in my journals. I will consider selling whole patterns once I can get my little store running. Someone even suggested I make some clothes with these vintage patterns and sell those. All great ideas! What do you do with the patterns you repair and preserve?

Well, I try to use them. I too wanted to see the clothes and sell online. I really love costume making and any historical clothing. I have 40”s, 50’s , 60’s, 70’s and 80’s I purchased myself in that decade. I agree with you though, I tend to not be attracted to many 80’s patterns. I also have vintage Barbie to make clothes for my Grandaughter. I have a beautiful 40’s pattern apron I have the fabric for to make I the winter. The only sewing I do in summer is little dresses for my little Grandaughter. I have collected shoe, hat, glove patterns for the 40’s in particular. The 40’s and 50’s I love more than any other modern decade.

I also have some beautiful 1940’s classic girls coats. I don’t ever cut out my patterns now. I trace and size if need be or make modifications. I cut out the trace paper and either use that or Swiss pattern paper. I keep all my patterns in cellophane envelopes to keep them from further damage. The pattern pieces I trace, I save and use plastic zipper envelopes to keep everything together.

OMG!!! I can’t bring myself to cut up or use my old patterns in anything……they are just sitting in a drawer. Maybe one of these days I’ll be brave enough to cut up and use my patterns. I love your idea for torn patters. I usually use the actual tissue pattern to do that surgery with Mod Podge - I’m going to try tracing paper next time.. thanks for sharing

Same here, just Google & almost everybody sells online. I was just about to do my grocery order online in fact. It's so much easier physically, saves on the vehicle & on gas too. Everyone offers delivery now since the 2020 health thing, I put for Instructions "Please put on the table or metal sofa on porch", since I can't bend to the floor & pick up. I keep track of the driver's progress on my cellphone so when the delivery driver has left the store, I make sure to meet them at the door. Sometimes drivers haven't looked at "Instructions" and just drop all those heavy bags, or whatever on the floor. You have to be there, then they'll pile everything on a raised surface you have set up handy near the door. I'll have a second place to quickly transfer everything, just inside the front door. Another table for things that can wait. For frozen food or anything to work with right away, my wheelchair handy will hold a good range of things. Holds up, as they're made to bring people of maybe 200 pounds all over. Now that I need to bring stuff here & there while not lugging it myself, really anything with wheels works. For taking trash out I double bag anyway, it's clean. Get those 13 gallon kitchen trash bags with the drawstring ties, carefully pull on one tie till its stretched long enough, you can just put the bag on the floor & drag it by that one elongated tie. Or I pile them on wheelchair, loop the stretched tie around both handles to secure the bag, get 3 - 5 bags on there. The device is made to smoothly carry a heavy weight over a threshold or curb. Pushing it,, you're leaning forward so it's providing balance like a walker, plus you're getting work done. There's always a way around, a hack. Like, to get things from the porch furniture into the kitchen or wherever I wheel this 3 shelf metal cart from the 60s into the doorway. They'll set packages on that if you're right there to request it. As it's always a number of bags, I move them to another nearby surface while they go get the next load out of their trunk. Online is a great way to find & support American small businesses all over the country. Mostly my plants even come, bareroot or small pots, from Ca and FL mostly.

Ive used the pattern tissue to cover a couple of lamp shades and I love them! Breaks my heart that you have to throw them out! Ive seen filing cabinets covered in them as well as mannequins and I’m sure there are a ton of other ideas! I’m toying with the idea right now of using the pieces as a background for a painting.
