Hi everyone!
Today I am going to share with you what I feed my horses. We all have our favorite supplements when it comes to feeding our horses, and these are mine.
The most important part of your horse’s diet is his hay. Hay will make up the bulk of what he eats every day, unless you are fortunate enough to have pasture that your horse can graze on. Unfortunately we do not have a big enough property to do this, so my horses eat a lot of hay. It is really important to have good hay!
In addition to hay, my horses also get a pelleted feed. Frisby gets a senior horse feed by Nutrena which is incredible, I love this feed, and so does he! Ethan, my other horse, is younger, and is working a little bit more than Frisby, so he gets a sweet feed. I have been using this feed for a couple of months now, and it works, but I will probably be switching back to Nutrena, once I find a sweet feed that works for Ethan.
But I have been using the same supplements for my horses forever, with really good results.
MSM: an inexpensive joint supplement that has anti-inflammatory properties. I usually buy it from State Line Tack and 5 lbs. costs about $19.00 www.statelinetack.com/item/ani...
Biotin: This supplement is wonderful for hooves, and coat as well. It is really inexpensive at about $12.00 for a 5 lb. container. www.statelinetack.com/item/ani...
SmartPak SmartShine: This is probably my favorite coat supplement I have found for my horses. It makes them really shiny, and less itchy it seems! Frisby used to rub his tail all the time, and since I started feeding him this, he stopped rubbing out his tail. The SmartShine works very well, and they also have SmartSHine Ultra which has fish oil in it as well, but it is more expensive, and I didn’t see a difference so I went back to the regular SmartShine. You can buy it at SmartPak: www.smartpakequine.com/ps/sma... it costs around $45.00 if you buy it in the buckets.
And the last supplement I use is called Daily Gold. This has essential minerals in it, and it helps to prevent ulcers. This costs about $12.00. www.statelinetack.com/item/red...

For years I have fed a regimen of psyllium husk one week each month. Sand colic is a big issue in Southern California. Knock on wood, since starting this - no sand colic 👍

My gelding is an easy keeper prone to being overweight, so I feed him a ration balancer made by our local farmers' co-op plus Animed Remission just to prevent chances of founder. He's on 24/7 turnout so he wears a muzzle during the spring, part of the summer, and fall.

Whole flax seed works amazing with your horses coat. We use it morning and night. You can tell a huge difference in less than a week!!

Shouldn't you boil and grind it so they absorb the nutrients more

If your hay gets a little dusty fill a string hay net with hay and then dunk the whole thing into a 55 gallon drum of water this washes most of the dust off it’s a good idea to do this withnyour hay before trailering them as that is a important time to be careful of the respetory system and they will eat it all in the trailer before it could begin to mould so it’s a good practice to get into

Hi Kaylee 😃 That is so great you are getting a horse! I would talk to a knowledgeable person where you buy your feed. They can tell you what might be best for your horse. With my horses, I always make sure they have grass hay in front of them at all times. And when you are adding new feed to their diet, you want to do it slowly so they can adjust to the new feed, including the hay you feed. When we change our horses diets it take a couple of weeks for their stomach flora (bacteria in the GI tract) to be able to handle the new feed. You could also talk to your vet, they would be a great resource. Good luck with your new horse!

What is recommended for a mature trail riding horse?
@brook4987
@brook4987 4 жыл бұрын
W for Wumbo basic feed Such as chaff and pellets because if it does trail riding it doesn’t take up as much energy as an eventer you shouldn’t need any coat supplement but if you want to you can add sunflower oil which you can buy at super market

almost all supplements are a waste of money. Nowadays, there are so many feed options that you can find many of these supps already imbedded in the bagged feeds. Many supps have no effect unless injected.
