While I've had it on my deck for a while, I tried to spend some quality time testing Game Pass on deck this past weekend. For the most part I'd say it's a pretty good experience, but there are some caveats and definitely a few quirks I found using it on the Steam Deck specifically. So, here's a look at what you can expect from cloud streaming games to your Steam Deck via Xbox Game Pass.

I've been loving Game Pass on my Steam Deck for all the reasons you stated in this video. One additional quirk is that the games don't provide much description and no videos or screenshots on the Steam Deck application, so I've been browsing the library on the cell phone app before jumping into a session with a game that catches my eye.

Great consideration of the streaming service, thanks for your perspective! As I watch the video, I am struck but how many titles I would probably have skipped simply for text size on the small-ish Steam Deck screen. For example, my 42 year old eyes require mods on Witcher 3 to resize the HUD and boost the font size overall to really make it enjoyable. Some games, like NBA2K, I have to play in entirely different ways on portable than I do on desktop as well. For desktop, I’m the dirty heathen that does the classic broadcast view, but on Deck, this view muddles all of the details I enjoy about the broadcast view. I might stay on the sidelines still a bit on this one (unintentional carrying forward of the sports into metaphor, ha!) for those reasons, as I don’t imagine Game Pass games are designed with smaller screens in mind … or is my crotchety old man showing?
@YourPlayer2
@YourPlayer2 Жыл бұрын
LoL you certainly don't seem THAT crotchety from what I've seen :p I didn't even consider the HUD but it might be that my video isn't really doing it justice. I don't have a ton of issues with smaller text but can certainly see how that'd be a consideration- ESPECIALLY in a game like Witcher 3!

I think you should've touched on side-loading windows and installing the Game Pass games to your deck's drive for offline play, similar to what you can do with a laptop, rather than singularly focusing on streaming. This is the real value of a GP sub for me. As a console gamer I don't have an expansive Steam library so being able to install games from game pass is massive.

Bwahaha thanks man- glad you caught it and was curious if anyone would notice :p I think an Xbox Series S with Game Pass is the most economical way to get access to a TON of games. If he wants a Series X that'll definitely be pricier, but either way I'd say that yes, Game Pass itself is an amazing service just because he'll be able to install the games locally and not have to worry about streaming but then if he WANTS to stream to a different device he'll have the option to do that as well and pick up where he left off since it syncs all your save data automatically : )

Living in Australia, latency has always been an issue for streaming games... but they have game servers in Melbourne and Sydney. Worth looking into... and certainly worth trying for a month. Would love to just try out some different games on Deck while lounging around away from the console.
@YourPlayer2
@YourPlayer2 Жыл бұрын
And I think that's the biggest issue with game streaming. I truly believe it's the future of gaming, but until infrastructure improves worldwide I don't see it becoming the de facto method for gaming for a while. Or maybe I'm just biased because as much as I do digital gaming I don't want to see my physical games go by the wayside :p And yes, if you can get like a free trial I'd start there!

Hello, do you need to own an Xbox to install games in the console and then play it on Steam Deck? Or you can install games directly on Steam Deck? I'm in between to buy and Xbox or Steam deck, that's why I'm asking.
@YourPlayer2
@YourPlayer2 Жыл бұрын
You don't need to own an Xbox to cloud stream to it, though you can't install the games natively in SteamOS that I'm aware of. If you prefer the handheld form factor and maximum flexibility for other stuff like emulation the Deck would be a good choice, but if you're just looking to hop in here and there in like a living room setting I'd think the Xbox would be the better approach :)

Hi Josh, sorry for going off topic but this afternoon I tested the Demo for Resident Evil 4 on my PC and PS4. On my PC the Demo has a slight lag but I really loved the Demo, I can't wait for the full Game on PS5. Yesterday I got Gran Turismo 7 for PS5 and now I'm looking for Gran Turismo 5: Academy Edition, it was the last G.T. Game I played back in 2014. Question: Is it possible to live stream and record our Gameplays at the same time with the elgato HD 60 S? Take care. :)
@YourPlayer2

Dude no worries! I played it too and it feels GREAT doesn't it?! I've heard a lot of good about GT7 from my buddy who got it just for PSVR2 :p I THINK you can do both at the same time, but you'd probably need to play around with the settings in OBS. Personally I've only ever done one or the other or if I WAS doing both, I had a splitter sending the video signal to 2 separate cards. One for streaming and one for capturing to a separate machine.

@@YourPlayer2 Thanks Josh, you're always a great help, I'm thinking about doing some Live Streams for KZfaq/Facebook but I also wanted to keep the Gameplays, I will try with the Avermedia Live Gamer Ultra but somehow I have a feeling that I can only do one but I will try. By the way, I will definitely play Resident Evil 4 on PS5 because on my PC I have a slight lag, same thing with The Last of Us, I really wanted to play it on PC but after looking at the Specs I found out that I can only play it on Ultra Low (but I will test it anyway). Wishing you a great weekend. :)

I barely notice any inputlag at all streaming gamepass on my steam deck. But I do have a gigabit fiber connection and a really expensive wifi mesh system (netgear orbi pro, which I got on some crazy sale :P). I also don't remember ever seeing heavy artifacting like what you experienced there. However, I do feel like the colours are kind of muted? Of course, when I play Xbox it's on my oled TV so that's an unfair comparison, but also compared to native games on the deck it all looks kind of bland it seems. I would still play it more, if it wasn't for the fact I have like 50 times as much to play than what I have time for. edit: what might help my experience as well is living in the Netherlands... we're pretty small and I'm almost 100% sure the server will be in a datacenter in this country (for proximity to AMS-IX if nothing else), so signals don't have to travel that far. Combined with great internet infrastructure and it's probably one of the best places you can be to stream games from the cloud.
@YourPlayer2
@YourPlayer2 Жыл бұрын
LoL JEALOUS! :p Weird I was JUST thinking the same thing working on one MORE Game Pass video for next week. Just seems kinda, flat or something? Not sure. Improving infrastructure is the big hurdle for really getting streaming to take off methinks. Thanks for taking the time to watch another one, Fin :)
@finraziel
@finraziel Жыл бұрын
@@YourPlayer2 You can mitigate it a bit by using decky plugin VibrantDeck to increase colour saturation. I like that for all games now actually, but gamepass streaming can use a little more. Not a complete fix of course, but it helps.

I keep looking at the Odin but not sure if I'll take the leap. Crazy how the Steam Deck has slowly pulled me back into PC gaming after being predominantly a console gamer for so long :p As for Game Pass agreed- normally I'd want the native version UNLESS I was already deep in on the Xbox and just wanted to jump in to make a small bit of progress or something.
@PeteOliva

@@YourPlayer2 Oh at this point, I probably wouldn't do it. I'm pretty certain they will be releasing an Odin 2 at some point with a more up-to-date processor. But I've loved it personally for emulation and streaming. I love the size, the main thing that kept me away from the Steam Deck even now was always its size. I like smaller handhelds. And I fully respect and appreciate how awesome the Steam Deck is, but I truly feel like the Odin was more what I had in mind. And it's actually done marvelously for me. Thankfully streaming from Gamepass and even my PC games from my computer using Moonlight has worked pretty magnificently for me.

Most definitely! I would still love to see GamePass for PC in Steam. I use it through my new PC (didn't even realise it came with my Xbox GamePass sub until recently lol) but being able to download and actually install to the deck, especially smaller indie titles that I otherwise end up just paying for through Steam, would be brilliant. It's the one last thing Microsoft NEEDS to do. Imagine the amount of new PC game pass subs they'd get. Maybe Valve doesn't want this though, as it might mean less sales for them on games that are on Game Pass?

Dude SAME. I mean it's not TOO many hoops to get streaming working but would LOVE to see them release a native version of on Steam. Probably wishful thinking at this point but I can dream :p

XCloud needs to get rid of that annoying eight-dot interface overlay in the upper left of the screen…really takes you out of the immersion, especially on the 7-inch screen of the Deck. At some point, I hope they add the ability to let you stream all your personal Xbox owned games over XCloud, not just Game Pass.
@YourPlayer2
@YourPlayer2 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I mean it's not a DEALBREAKER for me but it would be nice if it could be even further recessed into the border or something ya know? AND YES- I was searching through to see if I could just stream ANY digital game I'd purchased but did not appear to be the case, sadly. They'll probably make that a function in the future at a higher-price I'd guess.

@nicholas You have no idea how GamePass or subscription services work lol.. guess netflix DVD sales are plummeting.. It's all over I guess says some kid on KZfaq said so with no degrees of any kind. 30 million people and growing fast all paying $10-$15 dollars a month, have you done the math yet? These sony simps eating a lot of paint chips these days.

The problem is none of the game saves sync with your steam library. Geforcenow is much better in that regard, and all Xbox games are now coming into Geforcenow eith better streaming capabilities.
