Even if you kept your rooftop tent to sleep in, having a ground tent for hanging out in on a rainy day, changing clothes, keeping all your stuff dry is a good thing to have. I sleep on a cot inside a ground tent. So much more comfortable than climbing in and out of a rooftop tent. They sure look cool but they’re not for me.

@@ggg4runner that's a good idea, i plan on getting a small cheap tent so i can mark my territory as well! that way in case i have to move my truck, i can still secure the campground for those camp pirates!

I thought about a rooftop tent, but just can't justify the expense and don't want to haul it around all the time or have to take it off and store it. I am about to sell a teardop trailer I had been using and can't stand sleeping on the ground, so I'm also going to tent camping with a sleeping bag on a cot. If I'm only going to be somewhere for a night or two and don't feel like setting up and taking down the tent, I'll sleep in the back of my 4Runner.

I have no idea if you will see this after all this time. But instead of those big plastic potato chip bag holders get the black paper clips where the silver part folds down and it clamps on tight to a whole sheaf of papers. That's gonna hold your bag closed really tight and takes up very little room. And yes, am hoping you did a video showing tools you carry.

I saw those videos too which is what got me interested in that NAPA one. I might get lazy and just do that EZFlate one and I just saw that MORRFlate (that 4-way inflation hose I run) has the same darn compressor too. Plus, that NAPA never seems to be in-stock in my area. Hi Roger, great post. I really like your casual fun presentation style. About the gears, the 3gen 4runner has smaller pumpkins than the 4th/5th gens, so I’d keep it to 4.88 for gears. 5.29 will require a smaller pinion to fit and is weaker than the 4.88. I run 35s on my 5th gen and 4.88 is still feels just a hair short, but it shifts well and gets about 12.5 to 13 MPG even weighted down like it is. Anyway, I really enjoy your channel and I’ve subscribed! Cheers, Mike

Came across your channel today and I just want to say that I am really enjoying your content! I've been camping/overlanding for a decade but I always like to browse the internet for newer videos/guides just to make sure I don't fall behind or miss something super simple. If you're new to overlanding, you have great tips. If you're a seasoned overlander, you also have great tips. I've spent my family fortune (I don't have a family fortune, but with the money I've spent so far it might've been a fortune 50 years ago) on all my gear. P.S. YOTAs for life. Love your older-gen 4Runner. I'm working with a 2007 6-speed manual FJ Cruiser :)

Thanks for these great tips. There are a lot of great ideas in here. This list never seems to end with this hobby! I have a '98 4Runner and have slowly been getting it out on trails and prepping it for overlanding. I have it setup to sleep inside (but haven't yet), and I really like that leveling kit you have. I've never seen that one - just those Lego looking devices (and they don't look like they would be great for tires). Enjoying your videos, and wow, you have some great areas to explore out there in CA!

Thank you for watching and commenting! Yeah, that leveling kit takes up a bit of room but has come in handy a number of times. My buddy sleeps in the back of his 3rd Gen 4Runner and he says it's cozy. Hopefully these atmospheric rivers lately don't wash away too many areas out here.

Fridges are a game changer! Bought a small cheap Amazon one 2 years ago, for a 10 day trip out west, and I still use it to this day. If you can't get a dometic, arb, etc.. grab a cheapo and insure it; most of us aren't going on 6 month, international trips, in our rigs so a Chinese cheapo works for 80% of us. Great review and advice! I'm going for a 270 awning soon.

First, love your videos. They are great. Second, I am sure you’ve upgraded the compressor by now but I have the 88p compressor and it fills my 35” tires in under 15 min (all 4 in total). I think your issue is, it’s not designed to do 4 tires at once. You could upgrade to the 400p but at the price point there may be other options to fit your needs.

Check out the Ikamper. I have the original that started on Kickstarter. I love it. It has plenty of room for two adults. The floor space is equivalent to a California king in width and a regular king bed in length. I love it. It is a hard top. The Ikamper also has an awesome rain fly for the door. Unless it’s a monsoon extreme high winds, it will be dry and rain won’t blow in. They have a bigger rain fly option as well as ground tent option that is awesome.

I thought about iKamper prior to buying mine but the GFC gives me more flexibility with mounting stuff the way I have my setup (awning on driver side, privacy enclosure on passenger side, 200w of solar on the roof but have the room to double that). Appreciate you for the suggestion though!

I've struggle with all camping chairs due to a back issue. I've just discovered directors chairs, those cloth and wood chairs. They seem to work for me, you kinda have to have good posture in one and engage the core when sitting. Idk, everyone's different. They also don't pack too small, but they do fold flat and store easily.

As mentioned in my other comment, great video. One difference between diesel heaters and the propex is that the propex is either on or off, with no regulation while the most of the diesel heaters can be set at one of 5 settings plus on/off so they are a little easier to regulate temp. But I am with you that a propane option like the propex is preferable over having to deal with diesel, I just wish someone would come out with an option that more closely resembles the diesel heaters in flexibility and cost (if propex was $500, or less it would be perfect, but at about $1000 it’s too much for my use cases).
@ggg4runner
@ggg4runner Жыл бұрын
I have read that about the lack of output settings with Propex. The thing with the diesel/gasoline heaters though is that there is no middle ground to pricing as you mentioned. You either get cheap knockoff that may or may not work consistently and then you have the the big names like Webasto, Espar, and Planar that cost as much or quite a lot more than that Propex HS2211. I'm back and forth but leaning towards that Propex one like I said in the video, though I hope there's a middle-ground solution that comes out before I just buy something.

Which USDA FS maps? Topo, MVUM or something else? You can download some PDF maps on their website. And, I'll go over some GAIA GPS map layers in the next video like the MVUM layer. Absolutely loving your channel! You put so much care and detail into explaining (and illustrating!) things - it is much appreciated. So many cool items here to consider. I wanted to ask: how exactly do you transport your propane tanks? And do you put them right in the back of the 4Runner? I want to get a 5 pound tank instead of using the little 1 pound bottles, but I’m worried about transporting the larger tank in the back of my SUV. Thank you so much!
@ggg4runner
@ggg4runner Жыл бұрын
You should not transport a propane tank inside the cabin of your vehicle as it can be a hazard if it leaks or if it's just loose (not strapped down). That being said, this is a case of do as I say and not as I do since I have been transporting it in the vehicle and keep it strapped down. From what I understand, keep it upright and never leave it in the vehicle on hot days. I have plans for a swing-out rear bumper where I can properly mount a propane tank in the future but for now that'll have to do. Another idea is to get one of them hitch mounted basket/carrier thingies if you have a hitch. Thank you for watching!

It air's up my 31's jiffy quick (about 2min per tire) depending on how low I run them. Normal trail psi is 15-20. Street psi= 35. Something to consider. Good luck with your adventures. Cheers 🍻, G. Skid plates & rock sliders should be a priority. 529 are going to consume a lot more gas but so will a super charger which you won’t need w lowers gears. Lockers are very important. As is a winch. Forget the supercharger and spend the 6 grand on the above. I have plates, sliders, 529s and lockers front & back, bumpers and winch. On my 21 Tacoma & 96 LC.

GMRS is a better radio standard, which is fine if you're just looking to communicate with the other people in your 4x4 convoy, but truckers are all still using CB and the primary purpose of using a radio in my neck of the woods is to call out your location at regular intervals and listen for logging trucks doing the same for legitimate safety necessity. being able to BS with one another is a distant second objective. I can't wait for the truckers to all switch to GMRS so we can finally ditch CB.

@ggg4runner they work on zip locks too, just take a bag fill it with air, and put one on then squeeze it. You will see how well they seal. Another tip with them, sometimes if your bag is too thin, fold it twice before sliding it under both folds. These things save so much money/food that I have 3 multi packs at home and keep 2 sets on my boat lol. That's the only down side to them, they keep things fresh so long they stay on bags forever so i needed more lol. On the boat they're a total necessity as the salt air ruins any open food almost immediately.
