KZfaq randomly recommended your channel to me a few days ago (thank you algorithm) and I've been making my way through the backlog haha. I love what Bradbury can do with words. Some of his best passages that I've read so far are from Something Wicked (those descriptions of autumn? That part about the autumn people??). My only issues with it were that Bradbury didn't seem to care about the plot as much as the themes and the writing, which results in some questionable scenes, and style wise I think he sometimes doesn't know when to stop and ends up pushing a very good thing too far. Otherwise a genuinely great autumn book. If you haven't read it, I strongly recommend Dandelion Wine. It's the summer book to Something Wicked's autumn. The writing never quite reached the highs of Something Wicked for me, but it's the most consistently good of his books that I've read so far.

Giovanni's Room is one of my favorite books in the world!!! And Baldwin is one of my favorite authors (I'm currently in the middle of 'Another Country'). Just stumbled across your channel. Looking forward to watching your review of Giovanni's Room after this! :D By the way, something I've found to increase my reading is to always be in the middle of at least two books, one physical book and one audiobook (audiobooks aren't cheating at all😄). I'm also a scientist, and I find that I can listen to audiobooks in the lab without too much distraction if I'm doing a repetitive task). I usually make sure that the books are sufficiently different that I won't get things mixed up between them.

I remember reading "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" back on a Marquez reading binge back in the mid-aughts. I liked it, but it didn't stick with me in the ways that "Love in the Time of Cholera" or "Thousand Years of Solitude" did. As far as videos for "East of Eden" go, some people make intermittent videos as they read, while others wait till the end to say anything. I'd just say roll with the punches and just say whatever you're compelled to do. If you have something you want to say, definitely make a video about it. In any case, SRU: Slow Readers Unite! I hope April is just as productive as March was.

ashamed to say i've never read 100 Years of Solitude! i've heard its a masterpiece, so i will definitely get to it. thought chronicles would be a good intro to his writing, which i really enjoyed. was really impressed with how much substance he fit into that little book, so i can't imagine what he could do with a whole full length novel! ok - i'm drawn to doing the whole thing and having a long comprehensive review/thought video at the end. but we'll see! i'm sure i'll find something to talk about in the meantime lol. we'll see how it goes i hope you have a good april as well!

Greetings from Finland! Just discovered your channel and it's fun to find new interesting booktubers. I'd love to read East of Eden as well but I feel like I don't have enough time between work and the rest of my life to read as much as I'd like to. Maybe that's why it's so great to find a booktuber who is another "slow reader". I dislike how booktube and other bookish platforms promote this idea that you have to read as many books as possible as quickly as you can. Quality over quantity, my friend. Don't feel like you have to constantly put out content to keep us entertained although I understand well you want your channel to grow. We who have found you channel will be here when you post again! :) I don't have an answer to your dilemma but a vlog style video about your reading process would be nice. You could do one video when you have read one half of the book and then another when you finish it. I think it would be also very interesting if you could do another video in which you show how you close read books and what sort of things you pay attention to when reading especially because you have an interesting academic background in science that might change the way you look at stories. All in all, I don't have a good solution for you but just keep releasing content you feel most comfortable with and little by little you reach a like-minded audience.

this is such a nice and thoughtful comment, thank you so much ☺️ i definitely have been appreciating the comments from other slow readers haha. its easy to feel imposter syndrome when you watch a youtube and they’ve read like 15 400 paged books in a month 😅 but everyone reads at their own pace, and i tend to reread passages and pages a lot when i enjoy them. also i know life is super busy haha. it’s hard to find the time to read all these books. and east of eden is like 600 pages so it’s a big commitment! but if you ever find the time i would really encourage starting it because it is so beautiful so far. i’m also interested on hearing a non-american perspective on it, because this book is and feels so american in nature. it would be so cool to hear another perspective on it. but i appreciate your words and suggestions ☺️ i think that im going to probably make a couple of videos while i go through east of eden because i can’t help but think and talk about it as ive been going through it. i appreciate you watching and again thank you so much for your wonderful comment!

@@CallosumBooks Sorry to butt in on a conversation I'm not a part of, but I wanted to second Heather's sentiments here. It's easy to get sucked into BookTube and see aspects of it as a "reading contest" (which is totally preposterous when you have a social life, are a doctoral student, etc). In a part of the community where it seems like everyone is trying to out-pace one another, I appreciate people who have no problem admitting they like to read slowly and savor what they pick up without. I'm perfectly comfortable with reading 30-50 books a year.

i always was a very fast reader, back in school i read about 5 books a week, but i just dont have the time anymore, also nowadays i prefer stuff that needs digesting and pondering and savoring 😅 the easy beach reads like the seven husbands of evelyn hugo will be finished in 1-2 days, but books like one hundred years of solitude will take a lot more time and thats so good too

i agree! i like to take books really slowly. however on top of that i am also just a physically really slow reader 😅 like even when im not deep or close reading a book i still read only like 20ish pages an hour haha. but definitely enjoy the digestible books more these days as you said

Hi there, I listened/watched this yesterday & have been wondering what you could do. I agree, if you want the channel to continue to grow, you have to post somewhat regularly. Are there bookish topics you could discuss which don't rely on having finished books that week? I know you have already done the Newbie book tag, and those types of questions gave you "food for thought" and you did a video without talking about a particular book. Maybe pick some other book related thing you want to talk on & just have a conversation video now & then. How do you decide what books to read? Where do you get your books? Or maybe do a review, but it could be on one of your all time favorite books, so you wouldn't have to read it to prepare. Reading this paragraph back, it sounds a bit lame, but you get the idea. You have a pleasing, engaging personality on cam & you can capitalize on that & letting your subscribers get to know you in the gaps between putting up book reviews. Good luck! By the way, I love that you are buddy reading with your Dad..I am envious! Also, nice plant!! Take care, man!

hello! great to hear from you again! i appreciate you keeping this in mind and spending time thinking about it, that was really cool and thoughtful of you ☺ these are some good ideas... i do however feel like my heart is more in talking about/analyzing the books im reading rather than making book adjacent videos... though i still do love watching those lol. but things like how i decide what to read/all time favorite books i would totally be open to talking about. i was also thinking i could make some videos of the books i've made as a bookbinder in the meantime, not sure that would interest as many people. and thank you for the nice comment!! helps me feel a little more confident making the videos haha.

@@CallosumBooks One thing I have learned in my years of viewing booktube videos on here is that you just never know what is going to resonate & take off. Sometimes I will see a topic that I think is dreadful, but it gains traction & becomes the person's top video. Or just the opposite...a seemingly great, fun topic will get 12 views. So just put out something you enjoy that is meaningful to you. I agree with you on book adjacent "fluff" videos...a little goes a long way... I'll look forward to seeing what you come up with. Just keep enjoying! 🙂

What might be interesting for you to delve into is a book vs film adaptation comparison for ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’. Personally, I love the film on its own, but I know it veers..a lot from the book. If it were ever to be done again, a miniseries would probably suit it better. Disney adapted a few ‘darker’ movies in the ‘80’s, including ‘Something Wicked..’ along with ‘Watcher in the Woods’ & ‘the Black Hole’ Be well, man! Keep up the good work

Three books in a month is wonderful. 😊 Quality over quantity is my motto, Matt. You read literary/classics which is slower reading for me. I’m reading Sense and Sensibility and know it will take me awhile. I love that you are into candles and plants. 😊 Refreshing! Have you ever read The Halloween Tree? I love it, and it’s perfect for the spooky season. 🎃 I still need to read Something Wicked This Way Comes. I agree with you. If you just finished a day or two after the month ends it can count for the previous month. That happened with me with a book I started in February. Audiobook counts as reading, and it’s NOT cheating. 🤩 Nice Wrap Up! 📚 How do you feel about making some bookish tag videos? You could also do other bookish-related videos. You could also choose another audiobook or two to listen to on your commute. 😊
