What I Spend in a Month in San Francisco ($$$) as a 24-yr old

Күн бұрын

How much I spend as a 24-year old on my rent, eating out, groceries, my commute, travel.... a full 31 days of my life in San Francisco. Thanks in advance for keeping an open mind while listening to me expose every dollar of my income I've spent in January :-) I definitely could have been so much more conservative and tried to spend as little as possible for the month, but I wanted this to be an honest video of my typical spending.

THANK YOU for including your fixed costs (rent, utilities, car payment, etc). So many others leave these out entirely and it's just a video of them buying coffee and Ubers...Leaves so much to be desired! Your video was so refreshing and authentic :)

I’d suggest diversifying out of your company stock. You have a high exposure to your company due to your income being largely tied to your job. By also investing a lot of your wealth in your company you are heavily exposed to your company going under (loss of job income and substantial wealth). It might be paying off right now but long term it’s risky!

Clay Alter she probably can’t yet! If it’s a company benefit, she probably has to have it vested after x amount of years. Then she can diversify.

@@Katherout there is always a balance of course. But consider this, you have not reached your max earning potential. But then again, you don't have any additional expenses either (like family). So as you are reaching your potential, lots of things (wonderful things) will happen, and you will be distracted, and your savings will go down instead of up. And no matter what, 401K advisors will say $10 now will give you more than putting down $100 when you are forty.

Interesting breakdown! My daughter is in Redwood City (was in San Rafael), and I'm in Concord, and it's surprising all the major differences between the two places. My favorite category is travel, because I often fly between Oakland and Burbank to see my family with a few trips a year to NY for family and an annual trip to Puerto Vallarta to stay with a girlfriend. I'm a tad jealous of your local friendships. Moved here in 2013 and haven't made any I'd classify as friends. Thanks for posting. Best wishes!

given the strength of our stock + the discounting + the growth it's very common to max out ESPP at my company actually! many sell as soon as it vests and redistribute to diversify. def risky but i've always learned now is the time to be risky while i'm young and can make it all back in a few years.

The two drink minimum is a normal thing for comedy shows and it actually does state it on your ticket, right next to where it says 18 & over Clubs make their money off food and beverage, the cost of ticket goes to performers
@Katherout
@Katherout 4 жыл бұрын
u right u right i looked at the ticket again and it's tiny but it's there! i guess even at second city in chicago they didn't enforce a minimum when i went? i'm a comedy newb
@sparkyourfancy
@sparkyourfancy 4 жыл бұрын
Katherout no worries, I work at a comedy club so I spend a lot of time explaining this to people lol places like second city and UCB are primarily improv and sketch, more “traditional” stand up comedy clubs (all the punchlines, Cobbs, The Comedy Store) enforce a two drink minimum. I’m not sure how ticket sales are split at places like that, but they’re probably making more money off tickets sales than “traditional” comedy clubs do.

By the way since you have an HSA that means you have a high deductible health care plan which means you pay 100% until you reach the HIGH deductible (for my high deductible plan that is 1,500). If you stack a bunch of stuff into one year you will finally get the insurance to kick in and cover 40-80%

You may be shocked to hear this . I live in this very over inflated town called Asheville, NC. Rent for a room is cheaper but probably the highest in the whole state of NC. Food and drinks are identical to S.F. Why ? Tourist, retirees from all over including CA, NY moving here by the 1000s! Here is the biggest difference. In Asheville we have extremely low wages. Very few professional jobs for college educated folks. Most young people fall into 3 categories. 1: Poor happy, 2: TRUST FUND KIDS ! 3: do their own business or go to school/UNI. Personally I would pick S.F any day as you can at least find well paying tech jobs to sustain your life style..... Not to mention S.F is one of the coolest cities on the planet ! worth the high cost . Just like NYC.

We also have a town like that here a bit south from San Francisco - Santa Cruz Not a lot of jobs in the vicinity, inflated housing costs that compare with the rest of the Bay Area's, tourism is its main revenue, most homes are owned by retirees or people who bought them in the 90's and earlier, and it's a pretty well-known college city for locals.

Hey, interesting video! I'd love to move to SF but I'm not sure how much bigger my salary would be in SF compared to France, biggest difference is rent as I pay 900€ per month for 70sq meters +50sq meters patio and two parking spots 😅 I'm a product owner with 3 years of experience including working at Airbus and Atos, maybe someone can give me a rough estimate?

I LOVE SPENDING MONEY ON FOOD. I was just in Chicago this past weekend; if you're there again go to Wiener's Circle for authentic hot dogs ;-) Also I spent hella money on my HR Block in-person appointment; thinkin about doing it online next year but since I moved I had out-of-state W2s big yikes! Def gonna check out Tax Pro Go next year.
