When I was younger, older people would often tell me not to go out so much, because it's expensive. Now that I'm older, I can say, I wish I'd gone out more! Socializing is good for you, both physically and mentally. You connect with more people your age - learn new things or skills to develop, find jobs, partner/spouse. Socializing doesn't have to be expensive either. Go for a drink after work, then go home to eat dinner. Go to brunch instead of dinner. It's being out there that's important. It's far cheaper than therapy!

100% you have to live your life! Drinks are cheaper than meals, lunches are cheaper than dinner, cafes are cheaper than restaurants.... and coffee is expensive, so prefer other drinks that don't go cold.

@@arooogaa In my country going out for drinks is more expensive than going out for dinner, it pains me so much 😂 But I agree that going out is good for mental health. And honestly, as long as you're not spending everything you have... enjoy your life!

I know this is an old video so you probably won't see this but when I worked in an office 5 days a week, my friends and I had a rule where we'd bring lunch Mon - Thurs and Friday was our "eat out" day. Having those set parameters really helped to meal plan and motivated me to actually bring my lunch (and save money!).

You hit the nail on the head about living alone and having "socialising" money (aka "dinner and drinks"). It also showcases how much of a privilege it is to socialise as I also live alone however due to other expenses and priorities with my money I do not have 'extra' to spend on socialising. Thus yes my ability to have social interaction has been limited a *lot*. (I also purposefully refuse to have a credit card and have no debt to my name.)

Many people have credit cards and don't have any debt. My credit card earns points when I use it to buy necessities like groceries.

I also live in NYC. Can confirm $1,450 is super cheap for a Manhattan studio since mine is $1,850 (but includes all utilities). I spend $25/mo on my phone (shoutout to Consumer Cellular!) and nothing on internet because there is literally free internet on the street (LinkNYC), at every restaurant/cafe, libraries on every block. As for therapy, mine is $20/visit (with insurance) so $80/mo. Subscriptions also aren't a necessity...I just brought my DVD collection from home and workout in Central Park/my apt lol. Eating out is so crazy expensive that I literally taught myself to cook (bad reason to learn Ik) and couponing will save your life! Also having hobbies that don't involve drinking helps a lot...All this to say that you CAN live in NYC on a tighter budget than her and also NOT give up any amenities :)

Just discovered your channel and am binging. I was single living in Boston at your age and blew every dime on going out and new clothes. But looking back it was the best time of my life. Even the worst of times are going to look great when you’re older and looking back, get out as much as you mentally can and make those memories!

I really enjoyed this video. I've been an official NYC/Brooklyn resident since moving here from California in 2019. I've gone through a few ups and downs in that time, especially with COVID, but I never thought about actually leaving until just recently. I've been considering becoming an expat and heading down to Mexico for cheaper living like so many of my professional peers and friends, but I know I would be so miserable. Living in NYC on a budget is still the best option for me at this time, so thank you for sharing your experiences with us!

I think it's good sometimes to reflect on you spending habits, I think I'll start to do that more regularly, my motto: spend a little, waste a little, save a little! You need to do whats right for you and what makes you happy, your young, so enjoy your life.

We are the same way with food delivery! We spend minimum of $700.00 a month at the grocery store. We spend at least that much on Door Dash. We are a small family, three adults. The food delivery is so easy and convenient it’s hard to say no. It’s really cool to see how well you manage to stay within your means.

While I was living in NYC (a total of about 10 years), my variable expenses were less since I like to cook and am not really into going out to eat (maybe because I've worked in too many restaurants!). I do wish that I had put more money into my travel fund, though. A few months of saving can make for a really nice European vacation! But I totally respect your honesty and your own choices. And, of course, there are ways to live on less in New York, if people need to . . . and when you know where to shop! One way I saved on transportation was to get around by bike (yes, even in the winter), but I love to ride and I know that not everyone does. And some of my co-workers walked to work every day - even if it was a long walk! I loved to ride and they loved to walk, I guess! Best.

I can understand you not going to restaurants because you worked in so many! I believe that is true for most people. If I ask movie theater employees if they have seen a movie I'm there to see most say no they haven't. Probably because most of us don't want to go hang out where we work! I like your idea about saving up for vacation to Europe or anywhere else for that matter. Also, you saved a fortune from not dining out regularly. My wife asked me a few years ago about when would we have the house paid off? I quickly calculated our dining and vacation expenses per year and mulitplied by 20 (years we've had the house). When I told her that we spent $100,000 in 20 years on restaurants she was in shock. When I told her we spent $100,000 in 20 years of summer family vacations she was in shock. This year due to all the inflation around the world, we spent $15,000 for a 6 weeks of vacation including extending her and my daughter vacation in NYC (my daughter is making music there). Anyway, spending money is part of life. How else will we enjoy living if we don't spend it on things that add enjoyment, memories, and social connection with others? Have a nice day.

Love this video. Every so often I’ll do this and check how much I been spending in a month. Definitely is an eye opening in how much I been spending and also it keeps me in the loop in what I need to get rid off or what I I can keep. I’m in L.A. and we have Ubereat, Instacart and Shipt for food/grocery delivery and YES they do add up. 😊

I only allow one streaming service at a time. I rotate. If I’m in the mood for HBO, then binge the show for a month and then cancel. I also use nord vpn so I can watch entire Netflix library globally. I never buy lunch at the office bc it’s expensive low grade food. $12.50 for a meal in NYC is a sandwich. I go to Trader Joe’s and buy their flatbread, cold cuts or salads and just bring that to work.

Pro tip: Go in halvesies (or thirds!) with your immediate neighbor(s), sharing the cost of WiFi. Yes, it can be a pain once or twice a year, but consider the savings... $$$ Bonus tip: Learn to tether WiFi off of your phone, since you're already paying for unlimited data!! Set up wireless tethering so it broadcasts the same SSID and password as your home WiFi's router, and only turn it on when the router goes belly up.

As for someone who is single but a home body..I'm blown away at all the eating out/ ordering expenses! However for your area the rent and utilities are cheap!

I'm the same way about groceries. For about 2 years i spent 900-1000 a month on restaurants per month alone(just for me). I realized i could buy a crap ton of groceries for that same price but obviously it meant i had to try a few things i was afraid of in the kitchen. That money "saved" went to other things but i do feel stronger mentally nowadays that i can invite friends over and have a nice meal and drinks for cheaper.

18 Lunches at 7:10. I can pack a brown bag lunch for $2-3. That saves what you'd pay at the food court. I worked with someone who averaged $15/day at the food court (or $75/week). That adds up over the year. Plus those pre-work morning or break coffees add up too.

Watching a video like this is useful, I think, for raising ones awareness about ones own spending. I suspect that many (most?) people never do an accurate accounting of their spending. If your spending there in NYC seems really high to a lot of viewers, I suspect that many people in smaller, less expensive cities would be surprised at what a similar accounting would reveal about their own spending.

Have lived in small villages my whole life, food is much more expensive, legit like can top the cost of a whole rent per week... which sounds insane, but we don't have all of the other categories like socializing, transportation, dinner and drinks, food delivery etc. so it balances out !

I would embrace buying lunch at work. So long as you get something fairly healthy, it's a good investment. It's hard to stare down a boring home made lunch when there are more appetising options available. If you can afford it, go for it!

I like that you're very honest about your budget, and that you consider if you're getting enough value for the money on each item. Some you do, some you don't. "Value" can be monetary, or life-enhancing. While I am low-income, I spend an "extra" $100/mo on Instacart fees for groceries, and a monthly cleaning lady, total. I have a bit of a disability. and while I could do all my shopping, and do all the cleaning, it makes my life easier, and frankly, I don't WANT to do it, LOL

Cook in bulk. You have lunches, dinners, or freezer food. Gotta think ahead, and be a little organized. My mom lives with me and I don't have a job at the moment. It's all hard cuz we like easy.

A friend who lives in NYC tells me that the biggest thing he spends on is convenience. It’s convenient to get your groceries delivered. It’s convenient to choose delivery over pickup for a restaurant. You want a washer/dryer in-building, or in unit? You’re paying for it. You want to live near a subway station? You’re paying for it. The more you pay, the more grease your wheels will get, but the stress comes from trying to afford it all.

I would call your Internet company and tell them you’re going to leave unless the lower your rate to the other one that will give you one more drink when you go out. Your channel is super authentic and I am glad I stumbled across it.

She uses the same company I do (Spectrum). They raised my rate awhile back so I called and they said they couldn't lower it. I told them if they couldn't lower it I was going to go with another company. They straight up replied, "Okay?" The tone came across as, "Why are you telling me?" They could not have cared less. I didn't know how to respond so I asked if they had any deals and they said the only deals they had was for new customers. I didn't switch companies cause I didn't want the hassle of switching only to be in the same situation after 1 year.

Those videos I find them so interesting, here in France compared to the US, people need to make at least 3 to 4 times their rent money to be able to just pay the bill, not including food or anything else. Here, people save at least 45 % of their income and place it somewhere, that means that a loooot of people only have a few euros left ( if any ) at the end of the month. Most have a budget of around 20 to 35 euros to eat for the whole week ( grocery shopping ) The contrast is very interesting, I've lived in Canada and now I'm in France, it's very similar to the US back in Canada ! I enjoy watching your channel, your authenticity is really appreciated !

I live in Berlin in a very nice area and my rent is: 715 € per 61 sqm. My WiFi is 30 € a month plus my cellphone 14 € - just as a comparison (Euro and Dollar are of very similiar value at the moment). Your costs are really wild!!!

Cell phone costs for single lines are ridiculous these days. I don’t know what carrier you use but if you are ever looking to save a good chunk of money Mint Mobile is where it’s at. I’ve used them since 2018.. can’t recommend them enough.

New to your channel, and already I'm so impressed by your videos! Please keep these going; you're providing such a valuable honest look at what it's like to live here in this big city we call home. I'm a NY native myself, and like you also single and living in a studio apartment. I pay $1460/mo in rent (in the Bronx), so I feel like I have a similar situation as you in terms of expenses and budget. Most of what you said is spot on! However... I really must ask, LOL: how in the HECK is your Con Ed bill only ~$45/mo? We both live in studio apartments, but my Con Ed bill is typically $68 to $80/mo in the winter months, and around $105 in the summer months because I love my AC! 😀 And I do go into the office in midtown around 16 days out of the month -- so it's not because I'm working from home all the time, either. Ohhhh.... I so wish my bill was as low as yours. Do you also pay Con Ed for gas for your stove? Because I do, so maybe that could be it?

Dinner and drinks at 8:00. Drinks are a lot especially in NYC. I would skip the drinks and order bottled water. That would reduce the bills. The monthly of $4363.29 USD is a lot per month. That's take home pay, so you have to earn a lot to start with. I have heard a lot of people are ditching the City and going somewhere cheaper where they can work remotely.

I'm in Ohio in a nice suburb of one of the larger metro areas and my rented 2 story townhouse (2 bed/2bath and garage) is $1520 per month. I have about 1300 sq. feet I think. Of course, I'm in the Midwest so my entertainment IS me in my home! 🤣🤣 I wish I had moved and lived in NY at some point when I was younger, but now I love my space. I could never go back to a tiny apartment. But that's what being young is for! Enjoy it and enjoy all NY has to offer. All the best wishes to you!

Idk if someone has already said this but if you buy your unlimited metrocard on a card and loose it you can get a refund for the remaining days from the MTA. Also, Visible and US mobile both have fully unlimited cell plans around $40-50…saves you like $60/month but hey, maybe you can spend all that savings on something nice at the end of the year when it adds up

Internet at 1:18. At the start of the lockdown various internet providers had deals. I went went with a $60 plan since I needed the highest and fastest download speed. Plus I only had two providers to choose from in my neighborhood. That was the intro rate as every six months since then the price goes up. My current rate is almost $130. I just got a notice the rate is increasing again.

Wow your life is complete opposite of mine but it’s so interesting to me. I live in the suburbs in New Zealand with my husband and 4 kids. I have a new Kia 8 seater car for my 4 kids and I, we need cars here. Will spend $400 per week in food. No work lunches or deliveries. I don’t go out. We buy takeaways that my husband picks up every couple of weeks. We pay for our kids to have drum, trumpet and guitar lessons. I pay for daycare and sports for our kids. That’s probably where all my going out money goes lol I haven’t had my hair cut since last year. We have a 4 bedroom brick house we own and a pool and spa. They are my entertainment plus Netflix and Disney. We can have friends over for a bbq if we want to socialise but I am a Middle School Teacher so I’m pretty peopled out during the weekend.

When I was single, I had a good job. I always had a good amount of savings by the end of each month, even with lunch at work every day and travelling. I pretty much buy whatever I like. But after getting married, now with kids, I had to cut my working hours to look after small kids. Income decreased significantly, spending sky-rocketed. Negative balance every month.😢

That's why i would like to have a home and a plan before starting a family. Lots of expenses as they are kids. Once teens/ they can work and your money will increase.

I always need to remind myself of the income differences. In my country, the average income for a single person household is 1500-2000 after tax. But then again, rent is 500-700 for an apartment. So I guess it all evens out😅

Living in South Carolina. A NICE 2.5 bedroom… $1,000. You will need a car, insurance, and power & water… phone… etc… so, it does round out.

The last time I invited friends out to dine and be entertained in NYC was at least 75 dollars sooooo, ppl should realize it’s a choice. They shouldn’t be surprised the premium you pay for this truthfully

It's crazy that a phone bill in US is 100€,that is literally around 1/5th of my moms salary! My phone bill a month is 7€ and that is expensive for me(living in Latvia)

Rent is extremely high, I just lucked out! I found this place in 2020 when everyone was leaving the city. Found out it was rent stabilized. Pure luck haha

Nice video. I can’t believe how expensive New York or the US is. It would be interesting for me how much you earn . I spent around 1500 euros per month in Germany including rent ..sometimes more if I travel or buy expensive things.

Wow. I have a PhD in a STEM area and work as a full time lecturer at Fordham University. I get paid ~ $66,000 a year. I can't believe how everyone else makes so much money -- or more correctly, how little I get paid.

But you don’t work summers and have every holiday off and probably zero overtime. In corporate, when you’re salary, don’t get paid overtime plus get two to four weeks vacation.

I’m British but I can’t believe it’s that just for a studio. Yes London is nuts at the moment but you’d get a 1 bed apartment for. that.

@@phoenix-xu9xj You sure. Convert from $ to £s. I WISH you could. Most studios are over £1000 now - and I didn't see a category for council tax, so I'd add that to the rent before comparing. I live in a studio and rent is increasing £75 / month from June. If you get out of tou h with prices for even a year or two, you can quickly be way off on the costs. It's competitive out there!

$134 for hair? That’s ridiculous. I am a NYer most of my life, and I spend $45 including tips 2x a year. However, I enjoyed getting out for lunch. Cook dinner 6x per week. Take out 1x per week. Saved into my 403b, 2k per month. 😁 retired in 2021.🎉

To be fair, these costs are fairly typical of a big city in the western. Apart from a few minor things here or there, those costs are similar to London and if anything, your rent is low!

$1450 is a bargain compared to Vancouver. You're paying about $2k for a studio here unless it's more on the outskirts.
