What I Wish I Knew Before Starting Nurse Practitioner (NP) School

Becoming a Nurse Practitioner has become extremely popular amongst nurses. In this video I go over 5 things I wish I had known before starting NP school.
My top 5 things you should consider before starting NP school are:
1. Know the job market for the degree you will be studying. You don't want to graduate and find yourself unable to find a decent job.
2. Set a realistic expectation on what you will get paid as a new grad nurse practitioner. Sorry but its probably not $150,000, instead closer to as low as $80,000.
3. Politics. Endless politics in this field. NP vs MD/DO, NP vs insurance, nurse practitioner full practice authority, etc.
4. Stress. The stress is REAL and don't underestimate it.
5. Doing a 1 year nurse practitioner fellowship would have been a good idea.

Currently about to apply for nursing school, and my longer term goal is to get my MSN. I had no idea NP Fellowship was a thing, so thank you for mentioning that in the video. I have the means to take that pay cut, and will absolutely be seeking a fellowship after graduation. I know it is still quite a ways out, but after watching several of your videos along with many other youtubers videos, I am even more ready and excited for the journey.

Thank you for your explanation. I am starting NP program in one month, and it is great to know that there is a fellowship for one year for NP. Because, my friend who is doing medical school is having 2 years of practice, and then 2 years of residency. I was thinking if something like residency exist for NP, and you clear everything. :))

Is the pay less or scope of practice different If you become a Emergency NP after doing a FNP program and then a emergency fellowship vs Doing a Emergency NP program and then working in the ER as a NP? thanks
@ahmedmirza3458
@ahmedmirza3458 2 жыл бұрын
Pay is the same. But fellowship gives you better experience and will make you more competitive for ER jobs. Companies usually want ER NP experience and a fellowship will give you that

If you get your NP from a specific state such as Texas, are you able to just hop over to another state to do their NP fellowship ? Does it matter where you got your NP license / masters?
@ahmedmirza3458

It doesn't matter what state you go to school. You just need to be licensed in the state you'll be doing the fellowship

Thank you so much for all these information. I have a question , I am a foreign medical graduate and I am interested in being a FNP since I am old graduate and hard to get residency in the USA. Do you know any shorter pathway for IMG to be a RN , then FNP?
@johnadams1562
@johnadams1562 3 жыл бұрын
Hello that depends in which state you live. In florida foreign medical doctors can do RN-MSN-NP IN 2,5 years and then do NCLEX (that mean u save 4 years school)

Degree mills popping up everywhere isn't helping the market too due to oversaturation (supply far outweighs demand). There are some programs that don't even require previous nursing experience. The future for NP career is a bit dim if you ask me.

I completely agree. Schools are in it for the guaranteed federal loan money that students will be paying back for 10 years. Finding your own preceptors is a load of bull. NO MED STUDENT ever had to find their own clinical practicums unless it was an "away rotation" which is optional, yet the culture is we are both "Providers" and NP's want same privileges pretty much as MD's without even half the education. NP education on a national level is a sad state of affairs, indeed. We are NOT prepared. EVERY preceptor that I have had looks up what to do on the internet after they leave the pt exam room (Family practice, specialty clinic, hospital based program-varying levels of experience, NONE of them was as confident as I thought they should be). It is a puppy-mill environment as far as NP schools go-it waters down our profession and makes NP's not as respected as the title once implied-in my own opinion.
