Useful information thank you! I’m travelling to Tasmania in 2025 to move into Hobart and I’ve not found any information on the Internet about what to expect on the spirit. So this is great.❤

we have gone up and back on the spirit a few years ago. we chose the cabin for the trip up and it was a night sail. i found it hard to sleep and it was quite noisy, so bring ear plugs if background noises stop you from sleeping. on the way back we choose the recliners and wished we didn’t, the seats arnt as good and it’s like being on a plane trying to sleep with lots of people around you, it was cheaper that way but i wouldn’t recommend it now that i’ve done it at least once.

The ships currently being used for the MelbourneDevonport crossing were built in 1998 and are known as "Spirit of Tasmania I and Spirit of Tasmania II". They're being replaced with the "Spirit of Tasmania IV and Spirit of Tasmania V" in late 2024/2025 (or so it says on their website). They're slightly longer, wider and taller...and might have wifi that covers the entire ship?!

The end of an era of Asheigh in Hobart. A new adventure in the big city but if I recall you are from just outside NYC? But maybe you'll miss the cute quietness of Tassie.

When you board you find a nice place to sit and do your work there. No way I'd pay for a cabin on a day sail. I'm from Melbourne and now live in Tasmania. I've done both a day and night sail.

Did this trip a couple years ago prior the port move to Corio, cabin at front of ship. Weather was fine both ways. Overnight sailing, so not having Internet was not a problem, there was phone coverage a few km off shore at each end. Sailing down Port Phillip Bay at night was a highlight, it is a big bay!

For us the night sail works, a day sailing is a day exploring wasted, at night you eat before you board, once boarded have a wander a drink or 2, bed (cabin) and when you wake you’re there 😊

Very cool. Thanks for this video. Definitely Mt Roland it’s the predominate kitchen window view along the coast 😂. Ive just recently returned from a pacific island cruise ex Brisbane and the WIFI was a similar cost per day. Shame isn’t it that it’s so limited. Maybe Cruise lines are charged a premium for using the cruise satellite and they pass it on. All the best in a Melbourne, hope your new job and home are fabulous.

The Spirit used to be a Sydney to Tasmania run. The route wasnt profitable though. I haven't done the Melbourne run but I suspect the Sydney run is better. The deal back then was that the Spirit was the best way to get to Tasmania with your own car or motorbike (because driving around Tasmania is actually a lot of fun. But I once did it with a rental car that had a broken fuel gauge - which was kind of exciting, but not in a good way). I use my phone for work and personal stuff so I have a lot of data (that accumulates when not used) in my phone plan. Its pretty good and its not too expensive. YOu could easily use that data on most of the Spirit trip. Even some of the phone sim cards you can get in woolworths have great data plans. And those ones give you a once a month 10% discount on your shopping so if you do a big shop once a month and use the 10% discount on it, you end up actually getting more back on the shopping than you paid for the sim car for the year - thanks inflation! So, basically, a free mobile phone, data - and saving on the shopping! Dont tell anyone...

The Spirit has never sailed from Sydney. However, the Empress of Australia and the Australian Trader both left from Sydney and sailed to Hobart with some sailings to Burnie. The service was discontinued in the 80s, with only the Melbourne service now operating. The Empress of Australia and the Princess of Tasmania both connected to a morning rail service from Devonport to Hobart, which was an amazing journey. I sailed from Melbourne to Devonport and on to Hobart in 1974 and after a few days I continued home to Sydney from Hobart on the Australian Trader. Thanks for the memories.

@@aussiejohn5835 nope. The spirit sailed from sydney regularly in the 90s and 00s. The Sydney to tasmania service ceased in 2006 (thats on the spirits current website btw). The operator(s) went bust twice and it was moved to melbourne.

@@aussiejohn5835 first reply got deleted. No you are incorrect. The spirit sailed from sydney to Tasmania in the 90s up until 2006, when the service was discontinued. The operators went bust twice. Kind of irritating to have someone claim the spirit never sailed from sydney when i have literally sailed on her from sydney. Check your facts before you comment.

The recliners are not very comfortable to sleep in but it beats a bench, I also find the day sail quite boring as there's not a lot to do on board. But how easy it is to take your car across the water is very easy and affordableish lol

Yes my wife and i drove down en route to Hobart in Nov/Dec 2019 so we embarked Melbourne for our overnight {first time to Tassie ever } trip to Davenport we emberked the car and selves around 6pm sailed around 730pm ish. Lets face it the Spirit is a ferry, so the on board amenities are set up for overnight or day travel so what do you want you leave port have a few drinks some dinner a few more drinks , bed, wake up around 6 am' breakfast then down to where the galley slaves row, to grab our cars and get off, it all went like clockwork. At Davenport we hat booked a motel near Spirits dock, old but clean and comfy as it turned out said motel aws owned by Spirit aka the Tasmanian Gov. Like on the boat

If you are able to endure extreme discomfort choose the recliners alternatively do anything, take a sail boat, fly, anything but those dreadfully designed seats.i still have nightmares, never again.

We have been to Tassie 4 times twice we flew and twice we did the night sail with the twin cabin. The worst part for me was trying to find parking while we were waiting to board when it used to leave from Port Melbourne dont know what its like now its moved. They have no competitors so everything is overpriced from the fares to anything that you purchase while you are on board, we have never bothered to take our caravan over due to the cost. We have to drive 12hrs to Melbourne from Newcastle just to board so its more convenient for us to fly direct from Sydney to Hobart then hire a small car once we get there, you can still save money by staying in cabins rather than hotels and preparing your own meals etc. What it costs for 2 people, a car and a caravan on the ferry plus the fuel cost for us to tow the van to Melbourne pretty much evens out with the cost of air fares and car hire anyhow. I also suggest that the night sail is better when coming back to the mainland if you are planning on driving any diistance once you get there, you can stay up have a meal, a few drinks, then go back to your cabin for a sleep and a shower so that you wake up fresh and ready to hit the road as soon as you dock..I reckon that internet thing was another rip off most places you stay at nowadays provide you with complimentary internet access. 3 of our crossings were smooth sailing one of them was pretty rough and was not a pleasant experience lucky yours wasnt like that one.

I would have opted for the day sail too. I like to see outside and explore and get fresh air. I don't really like sailing at night. The cabin sounded good value, aside from the wifi scam. Good tips about bringing extra food for betwen meal snacks especially if tou have dietary restrictions. Looks like you're filming the outro in a national park or some kind of walking /nature trail?

We did a night crossing last September. It was fine going over but very rough coming back. I was so sick for hours. I just lay comatose in the cabin the whole journey. I’m never going back on that ferry again.

the reason the wifi is so expensive is because its most likely some sort of satellite connection. I don't remember the movies costing money last time I went, but that was ~12 years ago and all the movies on offer were at least a few years old. they did not have wifi at all back then. the cabins are really only for sleep/shower, not really useful for day sails unless you need to catch up on sleep or shower. last time I was on it was a day sail and I went the recliner, but never actually found my recliner, ended up just sitting on one of the upper decks all day looking out at the water. when I have done the cabins over night it was the shared cabin, so not the best experience.

The WiFi situation is not unusual for a ship. As it's satellite based, it's expensive and slow, this is true for cruise ships as well, not just Spirit. It's a sad state of affairs if someone cannot switch off from their devices for a mere 12 hours crossing Bass Strait. The smart money, if you do want to watch something in your cabin, is to download it off your favourite streaming platform, to your device, from home or your accommodation. When I travelled 2 weeks ago, my 6th or 7th time on Spirit, I just downloaded some movies onto my phone. Being a night sail, I enjoyed the live entertainment as well, and enjoyed some dinner.
