I think the sweet spot for most folks is the 285/75/17 aka the 34". Looks bigger than the 33" but doesn't have all the hassle like a 35" does. Great video!

@@lucasr5675 I have one and did with 33s. Some folks can get away with it for a 33 but I don’t see that happening with a 34. I still rub on some plastics at full lock.

@@smashwindow01 You're still going to run into the issue with the overall diameter of the tire i.e. hitting the back of the wheel well or cab mount.

I got the 21LB SCS F5 rims and 265/70/r17 XL Baja Boss AT tires. For what I do it is a great combo. Nice and light!

The weight comparisons you did are great and super helpful. Lightweight anything pays for itself in dividends over time, especially wheels/tires. Sub 20lb wheels aren’t hard to find these days and the only way to get lightweight mud or AT tires is to go skinny which I don’t hate

I just recently got 285/75R16 MT Baja Boss AT's for my 1st gen sequoia, running on Series 80 LC rims, have 1 inch spacers up front for caliper clearance and frame clearance, 2 inch OME/Bilstein 5100 lift from all dogs. Loving them for sure, they definitely are hefty but about as hefty as the K02's I just got rid of on the same rims. Handles great, especially in the wet, and are way quieter. With balancing I am going with balancing beads here shortly as I requested them at discount tire but alas they don't carry balance beads so. Reason why I want to go to that is its a better dynamic balance and also don't have to worry about throwing weights or the tire shifting on the rim while aired down. I went to the MT's because of a friend with a 4Runner went to them and has done a lot of back country driving in dirt, mud, and snow in the cascades and east of the cascades here in Oregon and he loves them for the traction above all else. I did have to go with E rated tires due to being a chunky boi of a rig that the Sequoia is lol but means less issues down the line... BTW link to the recommended channel for the traction comparison?

Possible to go with 33’s a mild lift, aftermarket upper control arm and not rub with TRD Pro wheels? Also I assume a regear is not needed for 33’s? Thanks again.

I really appreciate what you're doing here. I've run MT-BB ATs and love them. I guess the question is, is it worth going from 34" to 35" tires? You gain, at most, 0.5" in ground clearance and you might gain weight along with all the other mechanical considerations that come into play with larger diameters, negative offsets and heavier, unsprung weight. I do think that "pizza cutters" are worth looking at for a few reasons and Kai goes into that really well. I think that keeping the lift below 3" and maintaining a 0 or +4 offset, while not as "sexy" looking provides a number of practical advantages over the "burly" look. Regardless of which direction one pursues, the hit to the bank account is roughly the same. :)

Haha, yeah no question. I think 34s are hard to beat. I also think precedent can sometimes be set by the echo chambers of forums so I like to test stuff out personally. Pizza Cutter 35s are likely the ideal take here but if someone won't compromise on a more proportioned tires (I'll admit me) then I am trying to see if there is another way. The next step of comparing these would be to compare two 35x10 setups that have huge weight savings vs the baja boss ATs. Lots of ways to go about it. I also think it could be a fun way to frame how to run 37s without insta-breaking the vehicle if you can run a super light weight 37.

Great Video again! We are so much alike in our setups and what I have done. I just recently went from a 285/70 Hankook MT (too loud!!) to a 285/75 Ko2, love them, and no noise! But, the rub is back again, on the pinch welds, so time to cut, bang and grind again!! Those new wheels are sweet, bead locks make no sense to me unless you are locking both beads and running Baja 400s or something. Have you considered Total Chaos long travel race kits? I am looking at those to get some 35s more clearance, very pricey with new axles and all, but I am considering.

I cannot confirm nor deny but I would not probably go with total chaos...if that's the route you go I hear many people immediately put in siberian bushings over the energy suspension ones they use. For 285/75/17s, doing a healthy BMC and pinch welds should get you most of the way. After I did that my 34s never rubbed.

I know its' stupid, but I want the look, but also perfect off-road capability and clearance, that is what these trucks are made for. Geeze what a ridiculous rabbit hole I went down!!!!

It would be easier to clear larger size tires if you go with zero offset or even positive offset. The MT BAJA AT in 255/85/17 is an interesting size that I would like to see more videos on.

The answer, even for 33s, if you can handle load range E, is the 255/80 size. Very light, no problems from width

4.88:1 makes sense with 35’s. How much does your vehicle weigh? Rooftop tent, awning? Thanks again. I think lots of folks don’t consider a regear when they should.

Have you ever considered the cooper evolution MT? Only 64lbs for a mud terrain for a 35. That’s what I’m gonna run once I’m done with my 285/75/17’s.

Sounds like a decent option. I'm mostly considering the tire, then the weight, and just never ran those. I tend to stick with all terrains because of the snowy months and packed snow we deal with in MN.

What did you think of the Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003, I think I seen you run those? I'm doing 285/75/17's and was looking into these but haven't really heard any feedback on them.

I would say they are an all around great tire. For a daily driver set on MTs, I'd say they are hard to beat except maybe what Toyo has. Many people tend to like those but I haven't ran them. I have heard of people siping the MT G003s. They are pretty good if fluffy deeper snow but hard pack they aren't great...there are other tires I would lean toward if you want snow performance but they could be worse.

I’ve ran them twice now, once at 285/70/17 and now at 295/70/17. I love them. One thing though is that you need to rotate faithfully or else you will get uneven tread wear.

If you aren’t doing the work yourself, you start to get closer to that price point after legit suspension, trimming/tubbing, and regearing. I haven’t come close to spending that amount on my setup but if I had the money yeah that’d be sweet. 74 Weld has some cool stuff too.

the baja boss are heavy AF, running a 295/70/18 on my f150, great tires alkl around and in the snow, mud etc but they are heavy

Great content as usual. Personally, I think the 35s look real nice but the hassle of doing all the extra stuff is just not worth it, plus costly and compromise reliability on the rig. My 2c.

Yeah no question about it. I'm not entirely convinced it compromises much reliability if the rig sees mostly pavement. Obviously its really hard on it if offroading constantly. Also these lighter weight 35s setup is probably way easier on the whole system.

So I just bought a 2023 0RP yesterday and I’m looking forward to the modding process. I come from jeep wrangler family and I don’t understand how the 4runner gets such bad fuel mileage. I averaged mid 16s with 37‘s in a Rubicon gladiator. I will say the Toyota is significantly more comfortable on the road!

@@mcwendel8066Definitely and probably detuned...many reasons. A lot of it has to do with RPM ranges too so driving at certain speeds will be more economical despite being faster etc.

Kinda funny how many overlanders are realizing how freaking heavy all their rigs are and are now discovering the wonders of keeping things as light as possible. A decade of social media trends made everyone overload their trucks with 200 lbs tens, 600 lbs of armor,100 lb tires, on every corner, 300 lbs of drawers and fridges, all before they even put their 200 lbs bodies inside the truck. Just so they can drive to a campsite that most stock Subaru Crosstreks could get to. Hybrid tires come to mind as well. Seems the trend is to make it look as aggresive as possible, just for looks, while they all perform ever slightly better than an AT, while all weight 20 lbs more. Pretty much all hybrids aren't even 3 peak rated. Hope this trend continues. Hopefully this pushes manufacturers to keep giving us lighter and lighter options.

Yeah, the thing I ran into was I wanted the protection for just in case scenarios. Steel can't be touched compared to aluminum for ultimate protection and its a bit of an oxymoron to have lightweight steel armor but I think people are starting to innovate which is great. I think some self reflection is probably bring out some of what you are saying which is cool to see all the OEM plus and pre-runner options coming that are more daily driver friendly and good for non-rock crawling off-roading.
