What If a Spoonful of Neutron Star Appeared on Earth?

What If

5 жыл бұрын

Neutron stars are massive gravitational monsters, and orbiting one wouldn't end up well for our planet. But what if we took just a spoonful of it and transported it to Earth? Such a tiny amount of a neutron star couldn't possibly destroy us all... or could it?
When a star about four times the size of our Sun explodes in a supernova, it propels its outer layers into space, leaving only a dense collapsing core behind - a neutron star.

If the mass of earth is 6x10^24 and 1 cubic cm of neutron star is 4x10^11 then the earth would be 1.5x10^13 times more massive. Still it would cause a significant jerk to the earth as both masses would move closer each other. It would sink immediately through the earths crust and head toward the center and change earths orbit. But if 1cm^3 of neutron star would suddenly appear, without the rest of the star it probably would expand explosively as far as I understand it. Life on earth might not survive but the planet would still be there.

@osmium6832 4 жыл бұрын
The pressure of its original environment makes it what it is and if you removed it from the neutron star, the neutrons would fly apart. For the sake of argument, let's assume you had an indestructible bottle capable of containing anything and filled it with neutron star stuff. If you brought it to Earth, it would immediately fall through the ground, through the mantle, and sink into the center of the Earth. Despite its extreme density, our planet weighs much more than a spoonful of packed neutrons, so our gravity wouldn't change very much. However, it might mess with the dynamics of the liquid iron outer core and alter the Earth's magnetic field. That could be a problem.
@osmium6832
@osmium6832 4 жыл бұрын
@Komandor Cliff True. I was thinking more along the lines of it temporarily disturbing the eddy currents circulating the outer core on its way down. I don't know if it would, but if it did, that could trigger a potential pole reversal in the magnetic field, which takes a couple thousand years to strengthen itself back to normal levels. It wouldn't do anything from the center of the solid iron core.

I get that it’s supposed to be a joke, but as a comic geek, I can’t resist. Thor’s hammer Mjölnir is not heavy, it was enchanted by Odin. “He who holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.” This enchantment is what gives the illusion of the heaviness. Mjölnir is also made of a metal ore originating in one of the Nine Realms called *Nidaverllir*. It is said to be the most, or at least one of the most, durable metals in the Marvel universe. Mjölnir is enchanted, like I said before, so it is much stronger and much more durable. Stormbreaker, Thor’s battle axe, is also made of Uru. In this case, though, Stormbreaker is more metallic gold in color, and it is not enchanted. This means anyone can wield Stormbreaker. Sorry for going full geek on you, just wanted to get that out there. :)

Also, if it happened anyway. They would act line magnets placed close to each other, not to mention it's gravity would plummet it straight into the earths core, but before that it would explode with equal amount of energy to that of the whole of our sons output. Also end all life on the surface, destroy All technology etc, disrupt and distort the earth's magnetic field etc. Besides that, it would be a beautiful summers day on earth, birds chirping, people on picknicks etc. ;-)

Looking for this response. Without the insane gravitational forces of the entire neutron star compressing it, the other forces would no longer be overwhelmed. It might not be a big enough explosion to change the Earth's orbit, but it should be big enough to cause an extinction event, like a gigantic asteroid. Much larger explosion than Tsar Bomba, for sure.

I think the question most people have in mind (which was not answered) is how would a spoonful sized piece of NS matter behave if it were subjected to atmospheric pressures on earth. The answer depends on which part of the NS. If it were the crust, probably a violent explosion. If the core, there are some theories about strange matter which suggest it would have the potential to remain stable and possibly convert any adjacent matter into more strange matter. Search for strangelets and quark matter.

Actually a spoonful of neutron star is very heavy about 900 times the size of The great pyramid of Giza so you cannot use spoons to hold it because eventually the spoon would bend it ifits a gold one and I’ll tell you why gold bends: Since pure 24K gold isn't mixed with any other metals, it's a relatively soft metal that's prone to bending, warping, and scratching readily. As a result of this, it is not often used for making engagement rings, wedding bands, or any other types of gold jewelry that’s why gold bends as pure gold is very very soft that’s why you can only hit mobs in minecraft 32 mine blocks of 32 and tilt dirt 32 and gold is even worse than wood means it’s the most useless thing ever but gold armor is weird as some versions we know they have bad protection but doesn’t gets its durability damaged during mobs attack or something like that.

The pressure of its original environment makes it what it is and if you removed it from the gravity of the neutron star, the neutrons would fly apart and release a nuke's worth of energy and radiation. For the sake of argument, let's assume you had an indestructible bottle capable of containing anything and packed it with neutron star stuff.
@TakeDeadAim

So if something is extremely densely packed, it weighs an astronomical amount and has an astronomical pull of gravity no matter how big it is?

Bingo. The gravitational pull of an object is dependent on the mass of the object and object it is “pulling”.
@protorhinocerator142
@protorhinocerator142 6 ай бұрын
Most of the size of any object is empty space. There is space between molecules, space between atoms, and even space between the electrons and the nucleus of the atom. A neutron star is just short of a black hole. The gravity is so intense that the space between is almost all gone. You have neutrons touching other neutrons. Conceivably, you could have an unbroken chain of touching neutrons across the diameter of the neutron star. Unlikely because of star quakes, but maybe more realistic if such a spoon exists. The mass there is insane, so there might even be quakes in the spoon. Who knows? It's all theoretical. The first thing that would be destroyed is the spoon itself.
