I can't believe my design (Captain Amerifan) made it on the showdown! This is one of my favorite KZfaq shows ever, so it's an honor. Mine sounded horrible & came in 2nd for the show & 11th for the season, but it was a blast just to see it on the show!! Thanks for all the hard work you do to provide us with such fun and interesting content.

I designed The Finger Killer. The blades on the fan are meant to look like this. The idea is to avoid low pressure on the back of the blades that push the air. Again, the idea is based on pure imagination and not any mathematics. I'm not an engineer, just having fun. Thanks James for the feature :)

Since this is built in discrete sections perhaps some tinkering with placement of each fan element would find a more optimum performance level... As suggested, flip the two sections, invert the airfoil section, etc...

Yeah reversed air foils don't really work like that, past fan design attempts have resulted in superior effect the normal way. I really like the fundamental idea though.

For acceleration, it seems to me, you'd want to constrict the airflow towards the second ring, and have that ring spin faster than the first, using some clever internal gearwork. Could be tricky to pull off.

3 parameters would really help people up their fan design game! A low-mid-hi variation for each would already give 27 different models. With even more variables a short series might not be enough. At least, if you want to make all possible variations, so variations^variables. If you set all parameters to "medium" for a base model, and add to that a none/low and a high/exteme version for each one, that would keep the numbers down but since all these values are related, you're bound to miss that one sweet spot in the multidimensional matrix. Then again, Major Hardware could leave that to his audience.

Funny! In the early 1970's, 'Mag-wheels' spokes were marketed as having 'wind-turbine' powers that helped keep brake-pads cool! Discussions about the low mass of the mag-wheel took a back-seat to how they were going to make 'brake-fade' a thing of the past. Brakes get hot, lose their grip. The 'turbo-fan' action of the wheels was supposed to prevent all that! Ah, nostalgia...

I'm a bit of a "concept whore". I have been a mechanic for 30+ yrs, so I watch pretyy much anything automotive related. i am also very interested in PC's and computers- so this series scratches both itches in an oddly satisfying way. To see the concept as simple as a fan deconstructed to such an extent, and tested is awesome. I may have to add proper CAD (I have been using the other CAD- Cardboard Aided Design for decades) back to the skill set (Briefly held a job as an automotive engineer with GM in the 90's, so most of what I know is useless/ outdated) and give this a go. Excellent job on an excellent series.

Hi, so small things i've noticed since you've been asking for returns on the video quality For the main camera/ the talking head camera : It's still a bit dark and the bitrate looks a bit choppy at times (barely noticeable , not much) this could be easily corrected by exposing slightly brighter (+1/3 or 2/3 stops) and maybe with a slightly slower shutter speed to smooth out the movement For the smoke cameras : yeah this one is a bit tricky because it's still noisy but now with the lights the smoke is clearly blown out, I don't know how much manual control you have on these cameras but you could solve the noise by reducing the ISO and diffusing more your lights (try avoiding shining the light directly on the subject but rather use bounced light on a ceiling/ a wall) this should look way better. Great video by the way these are all minor comments this show is still a joy to watch.

Nice video. The Not A Fan, based on the Tesla wheel. You raised the question if they perhaps looked towards blowing cool air into the car body. This could very well be, because each wheel houses an electric motor, and any extra cooling would be welcome. {Note, I am saying this based on vaguelly remembered vids on electric motors and how they are made to go.] But I have been a fan of the fan showdown from season 1. Good videos, interesting topics. Major Hardware is a channel to recomend for giving your engineering side a bit of a tweek.

With the Finger Killer, airplane propellers are basically spinning wings. The round leading edge should be what engages the air first. Also, when you have tandem propellers, the front will be less aggressive than the back. Part of the reason is because the front fan is grabbing more clean air and will be more efficient. Also, the air hitting the back propeller is travelling back already, therefore a higher angle of attack is needed to accelerate it even further. I am curious to see how well this fan would work flipped around. A side benefit will be that it should be quieter too. While flying RC planes, I can hear when someone puts a propeller on backwards.

Not planning on getting a Tesla. Think I might get the Aptera Sol once it comes to market. Having the car basically power it's self one day to the next is definitely a huge selling point. Especially when the base model is only $25K with the fully speced out model at $45K. Way better deal than the Tesla. But if you ever need more than 2 seats in your car, guess it's not a good choice for you.

I think the reverse air foil idea might have been that it's the lower air pressure above the wing that helps a plane fly. So that negative pressure would in theory, suck more air into the fan. That's just my guess
@krzysztofczarnecki8238
@krzysztofczarnecki8238 2 жыл бұрын
It still does the lower pressure above the wing because it's thicker on the top side so the air moves faster and there is lower pressure. The pointy side of the airfoil has nothing to do with whether the top or bottom of it generates lift, it is supposed to be on the trailing edge so that the air flows off it smoothly creating less drag and to keep it from stalling. If the fat part was there, there would be a low pressure zone behind it with vortices and whatnot. The front of a normal airfoil is blunt and rounded to separate the air stream better into the top and bottom parts at different attack angles, but that's on planes which can fly at different angles and may not be needed as much in a fan which has a constant angle of attack.

I actually like the turbofan as either an extractor fan or for one of those coolers with fans parallel to the motherboard like stock coolers.

You could definitely improve on it though because it doesn't need to fit on a car.

If possible, you should see about tracking the Hz of the fans along with the Dbs. It would be interesting to compare the pitches that way.

Been waiting for someone to do a Corvette Saw Blade. But, I'm happy with the Tesla wheel. New setup is coming along very nicely! I don't think you need to tweak anything too much, as it looks pretty good as it is. So, maybe a few very minor tweaks here and there, and you should be good to go.

Most modern cars actually design aluminum alloy rims like a fan to cool your brakes and rotors. That's why vehicles with steel wheels generally wear through brake pads faster because they can't dissipate heat.

you can get a sound spectral analysis app for you phone peek sound frequencies can be found for each fan.

So many of the fans you get seem to have a lot of focus on the intake of air but very few seem to account for the downstream air flow shape. The ones that do seem to be at the top of your leader board.

The hubcap fan isn't just meant for brake cooling. It's also used to produce downforce by sucking air out from under the car. Most disc brakes have built in fins that cool the rotors fairly well. Depends on the design and use of the car.

Try running a spectrum analyzer on the sound test. Some sound frequencies are easier to listen to than others, this would tell you exactly what is going on.

@04:34 that kind of fan will work best in a centrifugal housing setup. Most waterpomp rotors exactly look like that. And yes Tesla had designed the rims as a fan, its something trending since electric vehicles, some use it for brake cooling and or earodynamics, some just go with the flow and think, we now need also fan rims.. lookit up, toyota and some other speak very open about their fan rim designs.

I think that finger killer might have done better with the shallow and steep segments switched. Also with the airfoil switch mentioned in the video.

I think the new camera doesn't make the cut. Last camera worked fine! and the visuals were delightful. But, to be honest. I don't know what I should see there? The turbulence suction? the dispersed flow? the radius of dispersion? I don't know.
